  1. To be fair, it was left in auto. Auto is exactly that, auto. Once you give the car power, then the wipers may well do what they are designed to do in auto. Put them back in manual then they wont get ruined. If you forget to put them in manual, well thats the drivers fault, not the cars.

Its as if you want the car to remember everything you forget. The car can help, but it isnt there to totally replace the human brain.

It's really a matter of how the automatic wiping function is selected. On my previous car (Volvo) you had to press a button to activate automatic wiping and it would get disabled every time you switched off the ignition.

  2. It is a little limited how hard one can drive in the winter. Snowy and/or icy Norwegian roads force you to be easy on the throttle, even with 4x4.

Then you just aren't pressing the go pedal deep enough. It's not fun until you're going sideways. ;)

But in all seriousness, the auxiliary heater makes a world of difference. Haven't had to do a cold start once because of it, I just carry the remote in my pocket.

  3. I love it. Nice little "old Skool" blip. Reminds me of old Scorpion alarm days. Cat1 on my Clio 16v as the factory glovebox immobiliser was a bit poo. But as has been said, can be silenced easy enough.

The Octy is actually the first car I've kept it enabled. On all my previous cars it's been an annoying honk, but on the Octavia it's rather pleasant. And I can easily hear if I've locked or unlocked the car without looking at the lights.

  4. Well, the non-scout 4x4 184bhp diesel is already faster than the vrs tdi, so more power is hardly needed.

According to the manual it does 0-100kmh in just 7.2 seconds.

And for a change the manual is actually conservative in that estimate. With launch control and switching the gearbox to manual mode I've managed to get close to 7s. (In sport the DSG tries to rev the engine too high missing the torque band.)

  5. You can bring up the Convienience Comsumption on the Maxidot of the Infotainment, that'll tell you whether the heated mirrors are on or not.

Also, pretty sure the heated mirrors activate automatically?? Noticed the other day (nice dry, warm & sunny weather) that it didn't say the heated mirrors were on, despite the switch being on the 'heater' symbol. Another journey after that when it was raining and not as warm, the mirrors heaters were back on again. Will keep my eye on this see if they ARE auto, or if my car was just in a weird mood. :)

And yes the parking sensors can be automatic, but you can turn that feature off in the settings if you don't like it :).

As mentioned above the heaters, once selected are fully automatic, their setting depends on many factors including outside temperature, speed and if the car is sensing rain.

VW have been using this system for years. It's not a new thing. I agree with you though, linked to the rear window is the better design.

I'll have to disagree on that. Actually the way the mirrors work on the Octy are one of my favorite features on the car. Now whenever I drive in the rain or snow I can just turn the switch on and the mirrors automatically heat up when needed and keep clear. On my previous car I had to keep hitting the rear defroster button every 15 mins, even when I only needed to heat the mirrors and not the rear window that was warm enough because of the heat inside the car. This approach saves energy and my nerves.

  6. So they've moved the Assistive systems button there on MY16 models, to replace the useless speech recognition button...

But this raises the question, what's in the place where the button used to be in MY15 cars with ACC, at the end of the indicator stalk??

EDIT: Looked at the manual. Apparently the speech recognition button has been moved to replace the useful audio source button. So I guess they've just moved one button and removed another for no good reason...

  7. I assume when it mentions "device" that it includes iPads, I have an android phone and I have read mobile data doesn't work when the phone is connected to the car wifi - needed for data exchange.

On an iPhone/iPad mobile data works just fine while connected to the car Wi-Fi.

  8. I ticked a good 75% of the boxes on the option list and haven't regretted any of my choices. The Columbus, ACC, rear view camera and Automatic Parking Assist 2.0 have been especially nice to have and get used daily.

And on the boot side (on an estate) the VBF and dividing net have been great for transporting all sorts of items.

  9. Really? Wow! Gonna try that. But Iam still not able to find your screenshots.

The forums search function seems to be a little so-so when looking for older posts. But the screenshots on the Apple site should show you the same thing.  :D

  10. Dunno about u, but Im an owner MY2015 vRS with Smartgate and MIB1 Columbus ;) ;) Mine in equipped with SG from the factory but see the SG retrofit manual. Doesn't mention ANYTHING about Infotainment. U don't have to have any Infotainment at all...

MY2015 Elegance and MIB Columbus. Skoda Media Command works like a charm, though I don't have any use for it. Skoda manuals seem to be pretty clueless about many functions.

  11. It only mentions the Brake energy recovery on the Octavia Green line III.

I don't ever recall this being mentioned as standard equipment on my vRS MK3 Diesel (I do have start-stop....but don't recall having brake energy recovery.)

I remember reading that somewhere will have to check the manual

Smatgate connects the cars control unit via Wi-Fi to ur device... It doesn't allow to control Infotainment with ur device. It has nothing to do with Infotainment.

Sorry, not true. Read the SmartGate thread where I posted screenshots. (I have SmartGate and it does most certainly allow you to control the Columbus with a phone or a tablet.)

Which brings us back to the question: What exactly is Rear Seat Functionality, since the functionality is already included in SmartGate?

  12. RSE? Oh you mean Rear Seat Entertainment.

The marketing text says, it's what makes "controlling the Columbus via a smartphone" possible. But that's already possible with SmartGate. What new does RSE offer? It seems the people writing the marketing text aren't familiar with the functionality.

  13. At the same time you have the option called Rear Seat Entertainment, which "allows you to control the Columbus from the phone". Sounds like the SmartLink, but comes in addition to the SmartLink option.

That's actually already possible on MY15 cars with SmartGate.

  14. Opels are still sold under the Vaxhall banner here in the UK so a few things are different.....bit like they are Holdens in OZ and were for a time Saturns in the US and Canada.

I knew that but didn't realize the spec names were different even though the models are the same.

And more interestingly different the same way they are for Skoda and possibly other makes as well.
