  1. You can remove the front head rests, I did it to get a flat (ish) base to load some wood into the car.

If you push the material down around the plastic bit on the top of the seat, there is a small button you can push with a screwdriver which will allow them to come out. You have to do it for both supports, but it's possible with a bit of fiddling.

Like he said. It took a while to find them and sort - while getting **** wet thru at IKEA.

  2. Having now completed just short of 8K in my 8 month old MKIII I was sitting on a steady long term average of around 56.4 mpg.

A bit of careful driving here and there would occasionally notch  it up .1 or and back down again with the opposite.

But on Monday this week it has suddenly started fluctuating massively upon acceleration, deceleration , coasting etc.

I am definately reading the Long term average, with the other two options been Since start, and Since refuel.

I haven't reset anything in the infotainment or even the trip mileage.

    Any thoughts on what's happening?

  3. Excellent - thanks for the advice everyone. I'm taking the plunge and making an offer on it tomorrow - you do bargain here still right? Would like a higher spec (xenon, spare wheel, cruise, leather) and I'd still like a full explanation for the broken glass and some assurance, plus only 1.4 yrs warranty left. But for 14k it's a fair price - too good to be true? mycarcheck came back clean at least...

Ahh I see from your link the traders advert is titled with the SE then he has preceeded to provide the detail as an Elegance. Maybe use that as part of your bargaining saying you thought it had cruise (according to his advert) and say you'd have to retrofit etc.

    Good luck

  4. The new 1.6 TDi is a fantastic engine and I am more than happy with the performance, and that's coming from a remapped 160 bhp 2.5 TDi VW Transporter.

No I don't win the race from the lights, no I don't win the race out of the 50 mph road works near where I live, but hey ho, the VED is free and it costs less than £150 per year to insure and I'm returning just short of 60 mpg.

    What's not to like?

  5. This is always going to be subjective to the individual and unless they've tried all the tyres how can they give it an accurate rating out of 10 or whatever. Personally I don't find my tyres that noisy but they might be very noisy compared to others out there - I've only had one set of replacements on my Octy so can only compare one to the other. You're best off using the EU rating label for the tyres which lists the noise in DB as they are all measured in the same way.

This is how I selected my tyres. Tyreleader are particulary good for seaching by the different ratings (Fuel Efficiency/Grip On Wet/Noise), or in fact any of your preferences, even if you eventually buy from elsewhere.

  6. I replaced the wheels and tyres before I had driven any real distance and didn't notice the boom before. Certainly not there now, but car was lowered, bigger wheels and Goodyear EffiecientGrip Performance tyres with a profile of 225/40 R18 fitted (noise rated 'A'). The car is a June 2014 build so whether the issue had been resolved by then or a combination of the tyre and/or profile has limited/removed the issue I don't know.

When did Skoda suggest the issue had been resolved?

  7. As an alternative suggestion. I am running Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance.

So far great wet and dry grip and good MPG with very little road noise, but have only done about 6000 miles to date so can't really offer an long term data on wear.

The ratings suggest these tyres have the same grip as the Asymmetrics but are quieter and more fuel efficient. They are similarly priced too.

Just to add, they are one speed rating down from the Asymmetrics but still good up to 168 mph. They also have a bumper on them so a bit of protection should you nibble a kerb.

  8. On another note. There is now the Smart Motorway system on the M62 between J30 and J25. Initially when the system was first up and running but the screens were blank (so no visible Smart indications in operation) the cameras were flashing and apparently tickets being issued for anybody driving over 70 mph, something which was eventually switched off.

However, just before Christmas I observed 2 cars heading down from J27 towards J26 at what was clearly more than 100 mph and both of them triggerred the cameras.

Does anybody know if they are set to catch drivers who are clearly doing over the ton?

  9. I don't have any pictures of what you are requesting, but just to say I absolutely love my 1.6TDi Octavia Combi. Although I don't win the sprint from the lights (and don't care really), it's a very pokey torquey engine with plenty to give.

The Golf is just simply boring IMHO and this is from a diehard VW fan, albeit having made the switch over to Skoda!

Plus I have had two lightweight MTBs with the pedals and wheels off flat packed into the boot with the seats up. Wheareas you might not wish to condense your bike that much it does demonstate the size of the boot.

The Greenline is lower than a standard car anyway (or used to be anyway happy to stand corrected), so maybe that's a strong option if you want lower.

I think if it's an Octavia, then whichever you choose won't be a wrong decision, just a different one!

    :-)

Edit: Perhaps boring is a poor choice of word, common as muck would be more appropriate. Saying that I am more than sure the Golf can, and will deliver!

  10. It all sounds like finally after your waiting that you now have a fully functioning system and I'm sure if you shop around you can get the bits cheaper and the car can be coded by whomever, my only issue with all of this is the ownership of any future problems.  Something breaks malfunctions or whatever and all your holiday items and the trailer there in causes a multi vehicle accident, its obvious the police are going blame you after all, its your trailer but, when asked what reasonabily practical steps you've taken to ensure the towbar/ancilaries functions correctly and are road worthy..... What have you got ?

Me yeah I've no doubt paid over the odds but, I have redress and sleep at night, cars and anything else moving at speed are lethal weapons thats my point, take it or leave it, it is what it is.

    Regards

    T

I am currently only using a towbar bike rack, I don't own anything to tow.

    But.

I do intend asking a well known VCDS expert if they mind me driving across the Pennines to activate a few safer options such as cornering fogs and dual rear fogs. Assuming they don't mind I shall also be asking them to double check all the parameters that relate to towing, should I or any future owner consider towing anything, as I also require that peace of mind.

As you know I have already sought your own expert advice on improving the headlights, making for safer driving, for which I am very grateful.

In the end I did have the towbar fitted by an independent who actually could have supplied the same towbar I had purchased. So in reality I could be sat in the same position anyway with these uncertainties. Without the forum I probably wouldn't be any wiser as to what should be taking place. But I am, and I have no intention to drive anything I feel would be dangerous to myself or anyone else.

    :)

  11. I initially ordered (from PF Jones) a Westfalia Detachable Swan Neck Tow Bar with the Westfalia 13 PIN electrics for my Octy III which has towbar prep.

The electrics were actually two separate looms but were Skoda dedicated, not the Universal option. The first would run from the plug that towbar prep had placed on the nearside rear wheel arch. The second would run from the fuse box and was needed if I wanted charging.

I arranged for an independent fitter to come and install everything. Once he got to the plug at the rear wheel arch we realised that it was a different shaped plug. Same wires just different shape. Obviously cutting into the loom is not the best option as this invalidates the warranty. So we called Westfalia and we found out that Skoda had decided to change the plug (sometime around June 2014). Westfalia also told us that they were working on a new loom which would be available soon!

Initially it was only available through the dealer.

Alongside this I also telephoned PF Jones who were totally unaware of the plug change, but with the new information quickly reworded the kits on the website 2013 - June 2014. As I mentioned above the new loom was only available through the dealer so I had to sit it out. Eventually the new looms arrived at PF Jones and they happily swapped it out.

I then arranged for another independent fitter to come and install everything! He first wired up the plug loom to the towbar and to our surprise we learned that the charging was working, without fitting the second loom that PF Jones had supplied.

I phoned PF Jones with the information and they no longer supply/provide the second charging loom for cars June 2014 on with TP.

The indicators/hazards, fog and brake lights all worked out of the box too.

The fitter only had a Westfalia Coding machine with him but managed to switch off the parking sensors and display the towing picture on the infotainment screen. There is also an extra marker on the speedo as well, not sure if that was him or whether that just worked.

I still do not know if things like the ABS has been amended but as I am only currently using the towbar for a bike rack I am not overly concerned.

There is a very specific post about towbar coding and VCDS which I will dig out when I have posted this!
