  1. When I fully depress the accelerator with minimal pressure it appears to come to an end stop, except that if I press slightly more firmly it 'clicks' down a bit more (this is a description of the feel rather than an indication that there is any noise involved). It's like there is a button beneath the pedal.

I must admit that I haven't got on my hands and knees to see what's there, I'd kind of forgotten about it until just know, but does anybody know what it is? Is there an under pedal switch and if so what is it for? Or did I just break something?

  2. For me it's a question of how long it takes me to catch up with all my friends and bore them about how much I love it. Once I've got everybody at least once I can settle down!

I suspect there would be a significant difference between the SE owners and the VRS owners on this, with one at around 1 month average and a significant proportion of the other at never. Or is that making assumptions?

  3. The ISG system shouldn't need replacing though. It's not at all like an alternator as we have historically known them, but uses a brushless, electronically commutated motor-generator. In terms of design it shares more in common with your electric power steering than it does with a traditional alternator. Certainly more reliable than an overused starter motor.

So, it should comfortably last the lifetime of the vehicle, but you might want to add it to the ever growing list of other electric/electronic systems that should last the lifetime of the vehicle, but probably won't (and can't easily be replaced without a computer to commission the new one).

  4. Interesting. I was aware of the clash, as I'd noticed that when I pulled the handbrake I was sliding the armrest back slightly with it, but I wasn't aware that it was 'denting' the handbrake. I checked today and sure enough it's as described by others on here.

I have learnt from this thread though that the armrest goes up as well as forward, I would never have known! [emoji2] The first notch up is sufficient to clear it for me, although it does make pulling the handbrake a little awkward.

In all honesty I'm not overly bothered. If the car proves to be reliable and the interior trim is free from rattles, a slight mark on the handbrake is neither here nor there for me.

  5. Back from a lunch time outing that included a fill-up: 504 miles between fills, 56.0mpg on the computer, 53.5mpg according to me. This from a petrol engine with a touch more torque than my diesel focus, a heap more power and a useable rev band that's twice as wide.

Technology has come a long way in 6 years!

  6. I had a 1.6TDCi Focus which was bought purely on cost (including both depreciation and running costs). If I drove like a nun I could get the computer to read 70mpg, but calculating it myself tank to tank 70mpg on the computer was more like 60-62mpg for real.

In general I started out getting average real fuel economy of around 57-58mpg, but by the time I sold it 80k miles later I was getting 48-50mpg. Never convinced myself of whether that was something to do with the car changing (DPF maybe?), or me getting less interested and a little less light footed on the throttle as time went by. I also concluded pretty quickly that doing 80mph on the motorway it wasn't all that good and a 2.0TDCi might actually be better, due to the higher gearing.

I am now in a 1.4TSi Octavia which I have had for 2 weeks. Driving like a nun on one 140mile round trip I got the computer to average 66mpg, but I don't believe this is anything like accurate. Currently showing 56mpg on the maxidot after my first 550miles, but I haven't had my second trip to the pumps yet so I'll be able to verify this later today.

  7. Have received a response from Skoda UK Customer Services. Some variation in converting km to miles (i.e. they use the standard multiples of 10,000 miles, where I tried to convert it properly) but otherwise the only difference to what I got from Erwin is the air filter, which the have at 4 years / 40k miles, same as the spark plugs.

Regarding the honest john comment, there has been discussion on other boards that on the Octy II there were some belt based engines that had long life all over europe, except in the UK where dealers recommended replacing them after 4 years even though the same belts were lasting 10 years on the continent. Don't know the details, but maybe this is the same effect? Try looking at the Octy II forum, or maybe one of the old hands can enlighten us?

  8. DISCLAIMER: Do not rely on any information below without checking it yourself, I am wholly unqualified to read the ERWIN documentation in a timely manner!

ERWIN, brilliant! Didn't even know it existed. Paid my fiver (Eur 6.05, that's about a fiver isn't it?) and pored over stuff that could be written more clearly! From what I could work out for my 1.4TSi it's:

Air filter 56k miles or 6 years

Plugs 37k miles or 4 years

Pollen filter 37k miles or 2 years

Timing belt - no specified change interval, but to be checked after 150k miles and every 18k miles after that! :o

Found references to checking the coolant but not changing it.

Brake fluid after 3 years then every 2 years afterwards, but I think I'd seen that in the handbook already.

Not sure I like the idea of a "belt for life", but since the car's only a year old I won't worry about it for a little while yet.

  9. Matt's monthly payment deal looks interesting, I might speak to my local dealer about that.

Looking at the above again, the green column "inspection" service looks like something I could do myself, in fact half of it I check regularly anyway. The visual brake inspection is perhaps the only thing that looks like I'm not qualified, that one looks like paying for a stamp to me.

I do 13500 miles a year, so I reckon I have 3 options on the servicing:

    a) get it switched to time/distance servicing and get it serviced every 8 months

    B) leave it variable, after the first service it will need an inspection after 1 year, but the oil change won't be due for another 5000 miles after that, so still end up taking it more than once a year as the inspection and oil services diverge.

    c) leave it set to variable, but get the oil changed at each inspection and just treat it as an annual service

What would you do? What do you do?

  10. It's hard to say for sure without an extended test in each (or actually making the swap and seeing what happens to your own car), which I suppose is the reason for the specific question asked by the OP. I know it made a massive difference in my last car, a Ford Focus, which had 17" summers and 16" winters. Because of the Focus I guess I have a bit of OCD about it, so I test drove an SE and an Elegance when I bought mine and I thought the 16's did ride a little better, but not enough to persuade me to give up the rest of the Elegance spec. It's hard to be certain from a short test drive, but I'd say that the difference on the Octy is much less noticeable than with the focus, although it is there.

I've never understood the concept of a car looking "underwheeled" if I had my way a 195/65 R15 would do nicely (although that would require the 1.2TSi, so maybe not for that reason!). I seem to be in a minority on this board though, I see plenty of people bigging up the 18" rims.

As it happens, I would say that the Octavia with 17s rides much better than the focus did, and it's also much quieter, much quicker, has a higher quality finish and generally makes me smile more. Should have got an Octavia last time too! :D

  11. Yes, Ilias 16". I have had the car for a month now and have been thinking about changing the wheels.

OK, I'll mull it over. As I said above, I've only had it a week and my plan was to do nothing this summer (time to assess it more thoroughly 'as is' and easier to sort out in the winter when the wheels are already off) but I must admit that the simplicity of a straight swap is appealing.

Out of interest, has anybody that's changed the wheels reported it to their insurance company like good girls and boys, or are you just assuming that with genuine Skoda wheels there's no chance of it ever being challenged as non-standard when making a claim?

  12. Wow, from having a vague notion to being made to decide whether I really meant it or not all in the space of a few hours. This forum's good! And without the use of flea-bay for my old wheels too.

Out of interest which ones do you have, Dan25730? I'm assuming "Ilias"?

    Any other offers?

  13. Does anybody have a complete service schedule for the 1.4TSi Octy mk3?

Mine has done 14k miles on long life oil, computer says both service and inspection are due in 4600 miles, all good, but what exactly is due? What is the recommended replacement interval for all non-oil related items; i.e. air filter, fuel filter, plugs, timing belt etc.

In the past I have generally had my cars serviced by an independent using genuine OEM parts, but if I don't know what actually needs doing how can I compare the price of my local Skoda service centre to anybody else?

And can an independent make the same "inspection" service that Skoda does, how does he know what needs doing?

  14. Well, ride quality with my 'Teron' 17" wheels is better than my previous vehicle, a Focus which also had 17" rims. I'd still like to improve it if possible, I would hold up the slightly firm ride as the only aspect of the car that I am not 100% happy with at the moment. Clearly it wasn't a deal breaker or I wouldn't have bought it, but any improvement would be welcome.

Interesting suggestion about the swap, I hadn't thought of that!

  15. This is a really obscure way to hide the accessories list, but also the list is tiny. The Czech website has anything and everything on it, I've been looking up alloy wheels there and they're all available: Star, Minoris, Ilias, Teron...err...more that I can't remember the name of!

Guess how many alloys are available on the UK site?

Clue: It's round, like a doughnut.

  16. Hi Rout, sounds like a good choice to get the 16". I bought my car 1yr old, so there was even less chance of getting the wheels "downgraded" (or upgraded in my view) to the smaller rims. I will be getting 16" rims for my winter tyres, but I believe that what I call "winter" tyres you would call "cold weather" tyres. No spikes needed in the UK!

My plan for the summer tyres at the moment is to use the rubber that is already on the car and then maybe I will replace the wheels when I need new tyres. This way I can justify it to the wife because the cheaper 16" tyres will offset the cost of the new wheels! (a little bit, anyway)

  17. New to the forum, so let me know if questioning a 1yr old post is not the done thing, but I'm just wondering how the OP got on with this ridiculous marketing issue?

I have just bought a 1.4TSi Elegance, I too would much prefer the 16" wheels and they are most definitely approved for the vehicle (google translate and the TUV type approval documentation shows it clearly). A good number of other EU countries specify 16" wheels on the Elegance, why do the UK marketing team believe that less comfort is needed on a trim level that I see as appropriate to a motorway cruiser rather than racing?

So, IainC, did you get them changed? Did you buy some 16" rims after the fact? I have spoken to my local Skoda dealer who has 'Star' and 'Ilias' rims available at £155 each, which seems a bit steep compared to some other aftermarket rims (Dezent TD or RE for example), but I would prefer genuine skoda wheels if I could get them for a sensible price.

  18. My first post here. Been a Skoda owner for almost a week now, and I already got plenty of advice from this forum in the run up to making my decision. A big thanks to all the old hands whose great info I've been using!

Octavia 1.4TSi Elegance by the way. And I'm loving it!
