  1. not sure fuse has been checked i will have a bit of fun asking mechanic but my estate is very awkward to get a contact you yhave to rotate and lift to get it to connect to power so that probably needs some abrasive to clean surfaces ,
  2. Thanks for the replies guys just need to get it insured and taxed now and get using it . still very wary as i heard a lot of scare stories about this particular engine ,wrong size piston rings - high oil use - timing chain stretching etc etc etc .Dont do a lot of miles these days prob 100 miles a week ,another thing i noticed yesterday was a dummy plastic cig lighter in car that i thought odd had a couple of spares in my other octavia so tried one in lighter socket and it wouldnt work ,mechanic said he had plugged his phone charger in and couldnt get it to work how do you clean the inside metal to create a better contact dont fancy poking around with abrasives .Got a spare lighter socket in the boot of my estate why didnt they put them in saloon . And is their another way of powering phone charger ,sat nav etc .
  3. i didnt bleed my mechanic did he has been the absolute best for 30 years but is nearly 70 now so is slowing down a bit and everything seems a bit of a trial now ,he has a reader but a basic no name one i will tell him to get his pal who has all the latest snap on readers to assist him if indeed he let the reservoir run low - he did say they may well improve with a bit of use bedding in .Is anybody aware of why Brakes international -General Traffic - and Europarts dont list a master cylinder for this car.
  4. Changed rear discs calipers and pads but not sure after doing a brake bleed wether things are just right .if you have foot on brake pedal with engine running pedal seems to sink too far prob at least 60% of the travel ,if driving brakes seem to operate normally ,a passing chap who has had VWs for donkeys years said Brake master cylinder its a common problem ,another mechanic said no its fairly normal for this to happen but brakes will be normal under driving conditions ,So i am a bit wary went on brakes international to see price of new master cylinder and it states dealer only so went on another couple of internet suppliers and they say same although there appears to be a good few on ebay . Usual problem how can you be sure ordering off ebay to get correct fitment .
  5. something not adding up to me a car could not use a full tank to do 50 miles its impossible.
  6. i was meaning whats it worth as a runner for parts its done 270k miles but the engine is good and strong or it was when i parked it up ,it had plenty of new parts before lay up with clutch as before mentioned
  7. Having just bought another octavia a petrol saloon i needed to offload one of my two 1.9tdi estates one i am still driving and one i retired when i bought the one i am driving and couldnt bare to part with itso its been parked on drive for 5/6 years. Before i laid it up it was pretty perfect re driving the engine was amazing and pulled like a train ,stronger than the one i bought to replace it .I had always maintained it no cost spared i replaced the complete clutch and flywheel set up and replaced slave cylinder also the only issue car had was an airbag light due to a wiring problem in front passenger door.I used to start it and even move it a little every few weeks . Now i need to get rid as i will be driving the newer saloon and park my 08 that i am currently driving on the drivethe one needing to go is 05.i rang the local scrap yard for a price and expected about £400 approx they offered me £238 so i binned that idea and moved it to my works yard to store a while .How much is car worth considering a scrapyard would probably want circa £300 just for the gearbox. mechanic started it on drive and drove it a couple of miles to my work yard it drove surprisingly well brakes took a few hundred yards to become effective . Can anyone make use of it for a reasonable cost .
  8. Update ,not sure how honest the mot was but brakes were binding on rear pretty bad discs were very rusty and had a wear line only about 1 inch wide how it passed mot is beyond me so re[laced both rear calipers and of course new discs and pads and a couple of short brake hoses ,not binding now lol. Mechanic noticed a broken rear N/S coil spring so thats been replaced and because i dont know history changed oil and filter .There is quite a bit of rust to be found underneath especially on rear subframe so that is being scraped sanded and treated .Just wonder what else may need attention or change mechanic is going to have a look at air filter tomorrow . 2 of the tyres have quite a bit of cracking in sidewalls so even though they have excellent tread approx 5/6 mm i will change them for new i get new budgets for £45 fitted and ballanced never had a problem with them.
  9. Well bought it £2k my mechanic drove it home for me everything works as it should but rear brake discs i noticed were heavily rusted on viewing, fronts looked fine. On the five mile drive home the disc on offside was obviously binding and got quite hot so new discs and pads saturday and mechanic said he was going to order a new caliper as well ,so will see how it goes , Car is pretty mint apart from a scratch on o/s rear wing ,it may tcut out . all tyres match and have loads of tread and spare looks like its never been on car its as new. (Bridgestones) Only one key so getting a new one costing £100
  10. I bought the car now so will keep updating re car - as expected the car is in fantastic condition especially the interior - the exterior has no lumps and bumps but paintwork seems a little in need of a polish .i was surprised how lively this car was on test drive then again i am used to 105bhp 1.9 TDI .Only has one key available there are two but seller cant lay his hands on the other - i went to enquire re a spare at a lock specialist and cost is £100 for another key fob they need car to be present. 68k miles though in 15 years cant be many similar.Car was i believe mollycoddled for at least its first 10 years untill elderly owner got ill so last 5 years its been used very little all mot info shows very minor advisories and problems - headlamp aim - slight binding of rear brakes ,rear lamp out windscreen wiper not clearing windscreen efficiently.brake discs wornbut not seriously weakened.
  11. owner had car from new and said since he owned the car he never had to add oil between standard oil changes
  12. car in question is as near mint as i have seen its hardly had any problems re mot over its 15 years some tyre wear - headlamp aim and slight binding on rear brakes ,passed its last mot in august with no advisories and has had 4 new tyres ,Thanks for the heads up re some things to check for .I have done a little research re the supposed oil use and cam tensioner etc the chap selling the car assures me the car has never used oil in between services and i do wonder how much in % terms the 1.8tsi is particularly faulty as there must have been millions sold accross the VW Audi Seat spectrum .My two Octavia estates with 1.9 pd engine have been excellent although not totally without problems ,Both rear wipers failed had must be 20 drop links and 08 has rusty cills that need painting for each mot since i had the car,
  13. Lack of use ? is this detrimental ,Car is 09 Octavia 1.8 tsi and owner claims its never used oil between services.
  14. i have been spoiled having for my last two cars including present one Octavia estates 1.9 Tdi i still own them both 05 with 270k miles and 08 my current driver with 230k miles alas it has got oil in the water header my mechanic replaced oil cooler but still seem to be getting lots of oil in header is it still leaking from oil cooler or maybe somewhere else head gasket ? so i decided to change car and this one owner example came along local to me but 1.8 tfsi engine and somebody told me to do research re oil consumption and i was a bit wary after reading articles -
  15. I have been looking at problems relating to the 1.8TSI in lots of vw/Audi but in particular to me a 1.8 Tsi Octavia only done 65k miles on 2009 plate . Are these as bad as the things i am reading re Oil consumption i even heard half a litre for 100 miles thats scandalous how are these engines ever allowed if that figure is even loosely true .On top of that cam tensioner problems and coil pack problems .Think i pretty much decided to avoid this engine unless some can tell me i am misunderstanding
  16. Anybody any ideas re lack of heat coming through the vents - did have an issue with oil cooler recently with oil going into water header tank .my mechanic changed the oil cooler so now water is clean but can still see evidence of oil in tank stuck to sides ,I did wonder wether oil had coated something preventing heat getting through somehow. My mechanic did mention some washing powder could be added to water and circulate it for a while to remove oily residue then flush the system .Temp guage seems to get to right place around the halfway mark .Any advice accepted
  17. Will they fit and totate without fouling on anything though - tyres are only 30mm wider does the face of the wheel sit closer to the hub face ? its all too technical for my failing mind i expected a yes they will fit and not have any noticeable issues or NO they are unsuitable because they will rub on X Y and speedo will be way out due to larger diameter
  18. i am still no nearer -too much infor for my brain to take in - it looks like stud patterns are the same so thats a start - going from 205 to 235 mm i wouldnt imagine to cause a problem its the et 50 and et 43 that concerns me a tad is it offset ie possibility of fouling on caliper or wing .
  19. Slave cylinder had it on both my octavias part is cheap enough its a bit of a fiddly job to do mine are 2005 and 2008 but i imagine later models are much the same
  20. My bro just gave me some wheels he claims will fit but i have serious doubts my 2008 octavia has 205/55/ZR 16s 6.5J 16 H2 ET 50 Ronals the wheels he has given me are 235/40/18R 8.0J 18H2 ET43 any info appreciated They have decent winter tyres on continental conti winter contact.
