DM Keith - Importance of air con service vs brake fluid change
On the basis that many cars probably never get brake fluid changed out of warranty, my car isn't high miles, and schedules are probably conservative, I think I will go with change at 3,6,9 years. Plus it moves an item away from the big 5 year service when the cambelt gets done.

Superb faults and niggles - 3 year review
It was. Via DrivetheDeal. I had to fly to Norfolk from Glasgow to pick it up but worthit for the price. I enjoyed it when the salesman from the local dealer called me to see if I was still interested in the Octavia and I told him I had got a better deal on a Superb. The thing is the Octavia estate looked OK if he had been willing to drop £500 on the price or give me a better trade in (on a car bought from and serviced by them) I may well have bought it. I was slightly wary of buying via a broker but the comminiczation from the Norfolk dealer was great and my local dealer honoured the two free services and a warranty repair without blinking an eye. I

DM Keith - Importance of air con service vs brake fluid change
Incompetence. It is basic common sense that if a car is being serviced at 34 months then the owner should be asked if he wishes the brake fluid change done. As for the extended service at 3 years old? Looks like it is an extra £60 or so for lubricating the door hinges, a wheels off brake check and visual inspections. As I am paying for an MOT at 3 years old which includes checks of the car do I need to pay seperately for extended checks as part of the service? I'm thinking at 3 years old I'll get a standard oil and inspection service, brake fluid change, and MOT. Any flaws with this approach as the car is out of warranty at 3 years old anyway?

Superb faults and niggles - 3 year review
Value for money is , well, Superb. My 2018 1.4Tsi ACT estate was just over £18k brand new with a few options - choice of paint, fold flat front passenger seat, variable boot floor, heated washer nozzles, all season tyres, and spare wheel. First two services free. Coming up to 3 yrs old in May it has been nearly flawless. A brake rattle, known issue, fixed under warranty. It suffered the rusty fast wearing rear discs which have just been replacedf or £300 at 26k miles. No other issues. I can live with the early disc failure at £300 given the bargain price I paid. Before buying I was looking at second hand Octavia estates. My local dealer was wanting £16k for a 3yr old 1.4Tsi example. Wouldn't budge on the price and was offering WBAC price on my trade in. So for £2k more I got a Superb rather than Octavia, new rather than 3 yrs old. Various options, and two free services.

Service costs - 35000 miles?
Cheers. I'll go with the MOT, oil service and brake fluid change. Next year I'll use my local garage for a service including plug change.

Service costs - 35000 miles?
Thanks for comments. Tyres are OK. Fronts replaced this year. Plan to replaced rears (now on front) this autumn. I run all seasons and they will be down to 3mm or so by then judging by how the original fronts wore. The OE tyres were an option of Conti All Seasons. Decent performance in cold, wet, and snow but poor life compared to Goodyear Vectors I had on my previous Octavia. Changed the fronts at 22K Spare is OK. Pads and discs are fine. Everything else seems OK. Only issue I have had was a brake rattle fixed under warranty. Other than that really happy with the car. Just stings a bit paying £495 for a couple of hours labour and £100 or so of parts. Last time I got a quote for a job from the Indy in Duntocher they were £20 quid cheaper the Henrys. I went with Henrys. But I'll get quotes nearer the time.

Service costs - 35000 miles?
Thread resurrection time. My Superb 1.4Tsi is due a 3 year service in May. On fixed servicing and will be near enough 30k miles by then. So looking at the website it will be Inspection service £185, Extended scope £60, air and pollen filters £80, spark plugs £105, brake fluid, £65. So £495 plus an MOT. First two free services were done at Henrys North. So happy to go back - but is there any chance they will offer a discount if asked to quote in advance? Also is it worth trying Henrys South or will it be a uniform company policy. Lastly - any suggestions for VW/Skoda independents to get quotes from. If the saving from an indy was £50 quid or so I'd stick with Skoda but bigger difference maybe go indy. Anywhere Glasgow City or northwest/East Dunbartonshire areas. I

TIMING BELT CHANGE - 5 YEARS
It's a tricky one. When the time comes I think I will probably just get it changed at 5 years and look on it as a one time expense. By the time it is 10 years the car value will be low enough I would gamble on a 5 year old 45-50k mile belt being OK for another year or two. Probably replace the car at around that time anyway to get one of the last ICE cars. Assuming reality and issues with mass EV use and our electricity grid haven't pushed the ICE ban back a bit.

small scratch on windscreen - polish it out? Glasweld/Superglass
I had an insurance replacement of my non heated windscreen in Sept. No choice as a stone caused a 5" crack right to the screen edge. No leaks and optically as good as the original. But for a scratch I'd be tempted to try a repair rather than risk a new screen.

19” wheels road noise
Not directly comparable but I found the 16" OE Bridgestone tyres on my last Octavia hatchback incredibly noisy. The tyre roar was the dominant noise at all speeds. So much that when the fronts were down to 2.5mm I changed all 4. Went for Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons and it transformed the car. The tyre noise was no longer audible above engine and wind noise at most speeds. My current Superb Estate has had 17 inch Continental all seasons fitted from new. Now with Godyear Vectors at the back. No noise issues. Definitely worth checking noise ratings when changing.

What would you change on your S3?
On my 2018 1.4Tsi SE estate +1 for stop start switch off. Owned since new and I can count on both hands the times I have left it on - stop start traffic jams pretty much. Better air con. Always seems just adequate and no more at cooling. Don't think my car has the auto windscreen feature or if it has I turned it off. Having driven a few auto wipe cars at work they are ****e. Prefer two speed manual with adjustable intermittent as on my car.

Can phone contacts list be displayed in instrument panel as well as on Columbus?
That's how it works on my May 2018 1.4TsiSE. Using the right hand switch on the steering wheel select phone then thumbwheel down contacts. From memory they are listed by most recent.

Car seat: can we fit a Joie ispin safe behind driver seat?
I'm 6ft3. With the driver seat set for me there is 31" between my seat back and the front of the rear seat back. Even allowing for variation in leg length etc I think you can say you have a 30 " horizontal gapto fit a car seat in. The website gives max L of the Spin seat as 74cm(29") https://uk.joiebaby.com/product/spin-safe/ I don't think any mainstream car has more rear legroom. Edit The actual room to play with will be more since there is a bit of give in the rear seat back when putting a seat against it. I didn't allow for that when measuring. I'm sure it would be fine.

Leases are expensive - really?
Another experience. Bought my 1.4Tsi estate in May 2018. List price on the road including options - was £22266. I paid via DrivetheDeal £18375 First two services free (Bought on PCP which was paid of early) Current trade in value approx 13800 (values from DTD and Arnold Clark) . So depreciation after 2yrs3months approx £4500. If I sold now the cost of depreciation and servicing would be approx £166 per month. Call it £175pm with the new pair of tyres stuck on last month. Seems competitive with leasing to me.

Superb mk3 life so far....
I'm happy with my 2018 1.4Tsi manual SE Estate owned from new. I drive 2017 Scoda Scouts at work and the ride and cabin noise are better in the Superb. Of course mine is on 215/55 R17 tyres which may help. The suspension feels a bit softer than the average car. It isn't a sports car but is good over poor surfaces. I find it as comfortable and quiet at motorway speeds as anything else I've driven. Other than rattling brake pads sorted under warranty nothing has gone wrong with the car. Enjoying the huge boot and huge rear seat legroom when carrying passengers. Compared to my previous 2012 Octavia Hatch it is a much better car. More refined and plenty of nice to For a petrol car of it's size the mpg is brilliant. Touches like the telescopic strut holding up the bonnet when checking oil. The door umbrellas, rear boot light that is also a torch. Variable boot floor. Fold flat front passenger seat. Etc etc. Really comfortable for long drives. I drove 720 miles from Glasgow to north Wales and back in a day without any aches and pains and on one tank of fuel. For a petrol car of it's size the mpg is brilliant. 52mpg on brisk A road driving from Glasgow to the highlands and back. High 40s at 75mph on mainly motorway trips. Tank filled tonight - 41mpg overall for 462 miles mixed local driving, longest trip 20 miles at a time with many 5-10 miles or shorter journeys. I got mine for just over £18k new with around £1000 of options. Can't see anything near it for value for money. Perhaps not so much now with prices rises. Flaws? At my trim level - SE - the seat fabrics are basic. Air con when cooling is just adequate and no more. But heh! I live in Scotland, how often do I need to cool the car? Maybe I'm just easy to please but my Superb is the best car I have owned and is as good an all round load lugger and long distance driving car as anything I have driven.

putting diesel in a tsi
I've only done it once in 40 years of driving. The only saving grace was it was petrol in a works van not my car. My extenuating circumstances were it was 12 hours into a working day and my mind was elsewhere having recently learned my dad was teminally ill. Didn't stop the work giving me a disciplinary warning for it though. Never even realised. Filled up from 1/4 or 1/2 tank to full and drove 20 miles back to base and parked up. 3 years on I'm still double checking every time before starting to fill.

Rattle
I had a metalic rattle from the front nearside. Usually when turning right at low speeds on poor surfaces. I guessed suspension related. At routine 2 yr service they diagnosed rattling brake pads and fitted a shim kit under warranty. Apparently there was a TPI. Cured the problem anyway. Back to silence. Don't know whether this rattle only affects front brakes or which cars are affected. Mine is a May 2018 1.4Tsi estate.

Why no variable load bay?
I have the variable floor. I'd class it as nice to have but not esential. It's nice to have a flat ledge when sitting on the boot floor putting hillwalking boots on/off. I've slept in the back of the car and the flat floor is more comfortable. Combined with the fold flat front passsenger seat it makes the car great for carrying 3m long planks inside the car. I have the boot retracting cover stored in my loft as I carry dogs in the boot. Having the raised floor in place means I can lift it to store small objects I don't want left in sight when locking the car.

Excessive Tyre Wear 4x4.
Likewise. My 2018 1.4Tsi is at 21'000 miles. Rear are evenly worn with plenty tread left - around 5.5mm. Fronts Down to mostly 2mm. F/N/S worn a bit more in the middle = right on the wear bars at 1.6mm. From roundabouts? A bit disappointed with only getting 21k out the fronts but they are Continental all seasons so maybe a bit softer compound? A new pair of Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons ordered from Costco at £118 each fitted. (215/55/R17)
