  1. Sorry that I've not responded to the numerous comments - first chance I've had to check the forum for a while....

So, if I am understanding correctly, unlock the car with my wife's key, pop it into the ignition, go into Maxidot. Maxidot should then display the settings related to the key - i.e. it should show that the option to unlock the doors is set to drivers only. I should then be able to change it to all doors unlock on single click.

    Is that correct?

    Cheers

    Glen

  2. I originally asked this question back in 2007 when I first got my car. I also asked the dealer but no answer has been forthcoming, so ding ding seconds out, round two....

I have Maxidot and when I got the car I programmed my comfort settings (especially single click unlocks all doors) with key fob #1 in the ignition.

I would like these same preferences on the second remote fob but now is it done? With the second fob in the ignition, Maxidot shows my preferences as programmed on the first fob, so is there a technique to "uploading" these settings onto the second fob?

    Thanks

  3. Hi

I test drove a Passat a couple of times when looking at changing my car - I was keen on the Octavia but was concerned about build quality. I chose the Octavia in the end has I felt it handled far better than the Passat and was more suited to my 5'6" frame. I can't say the Octavia is faultless but having covered 30K miles so far I do not regret buying it.

Regarding your Octavia problems, as a start, use the search facility on this forum to find some threads relating to the problems you are experiencing. I do this all the time when something "odd" happens with my car - the most recent was unexpected service interval.

    Good luck!

  4. Out of interest, what mk mondeo / octy are you talking about when you rate the octy interior as better quality?

My interpretation of the mk3 mondeo's interior is that it far surpasses the mk1 octy.

The Mondeo takes a lot of bashing for being dull as dishwater but if you ignore the inevitable bore of a low powered engine (in my case anyway!), the majority of them are solid motors. This perception that the interior fit and finish is below that of a Skoda just isn't right tbh.

I've got a MKIII (55 plate) ST220 and a MKII (07 plate) Octavia - the Skoda interior feels more classy than the ST220 and the interior is more stylishly designed. I also prefer the green instrument lighting in the Octavia and being short, I can at least extend the arm rest in the Skoda - the one in the ST is of no use to me as I have the driver's seat too far forward.

I used to have a 1996 MKII Mondeo (which I sold to my brother who is replacing it with a MKIII soon) and reckon the interior was better than in the MKIII - I'll ask my brother what he thinks when he gets his.

I quite agree that the Mondeo gets an unfair bashing - the MKII I had was the best handling car I've ever driven up to getting the ST220 - the Octavia comes a close second.

  5. Hi

I've got one (as a second car) and it's great! It's only done 27K but I've been told that the engine is virtually indestructible. The car is a dream to drive and I get about 30 mpg from it. The interior is a bit cheap and tacky (my Octavia has a nicer interior), the Sony stereo has regular hiccups and the aftermarket parking sensors are a bit all or nothing but guess what? I don't care a jot! It is great to drive, the engine is so flexible it'll cruise in sixth gear at 30 MPH and really quite and comfortable. I always look forward to driving it, no matter what the weather or road conditions.

My only regret is buying it last August as it has lost about 50% of its value since!

  6. Did you get free servicing when you bought the car ? I only ask as I did with mine even though it was set to variable, when the first service came they serviced it and set it to fixed as thats the terms of the free servicing. Just a thought.

No, I didn't get the first service free and the invoice clearly shows I was on variable - I've now spoken to the dealer you agree that the reset probably wasn't done and to pop it in to be reset - that's all very well, but they are a 120 mile round trip.

  7. Hi

I can't answer all your queries, but certainly with road noise, it may be tyre related - on 16" whells Bridgestone Turanzas are often fitted (as they were on my car) and are really, really noisy on most road surfaces. Many owners change to a different brand when the tyres are worn - it also seems that the noise from these tyres increase once they are down to 2 - 3mm. Are you using these tyres?

Regarding under seat storage, there was a previous post on here regarding adding one to the drivers seat on rhd drive cars - I'm sure if you do the search you find the details.

  8. Hello All

My Octavia was serviced last year at about 18K miles. It has just passed 27K and now every time I switch on, it is telling me 600 miles to next service (it said 700 miles on Monday). That's only 9K miles since the last service!

I was expecting it to give me another 18K - my driving style hasn't changed during this time and most journeys are at least 20 miles with almost no stop-start driving.

It makes me wonder whether I'd be better on fixed servicing as AFAIK the cost is less as non long life oil is used.

    Any ideas out there?

Many thanks - and Happy New Year!

    Glen

In 1992 got 1990 Ford Orion 1.6i GLS

In 1993 got new Skoda Favorit 136 LS

    In 1993 got s/h 1990 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.8 GL

In 1994 got new Nissan Micra 1.3 SLX

    In 1995 got s/h 1992 Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 CD

    In 1997 got s/h 1991 BMW 318i

In 1999 got 1996 Ford Mondeo 2.0 Ghia

    In 2001 got 1995 BMW 328i SE

    In 2002 got 2000 Ford Mondeo 2.5 Ghia X

In 2003 got new Ford Fiesta 1.6 Ghia

In 2004 got new BMW 320d SE

In 2007 got new Skoda Octavia 2.0TD Elegance (current car)

In 2008 got 2005 Ford Mondeo ST220 (currrent car)

... the shortest time I kept a car was 1 month (the Favorit) and the longest (so far) has been the 320D which lasted until August 2008 when it was traded for the ST220.

Happy New Year to one and all!

  10. I've an infuriating rattle/sizzle from the boot area, maybe the tailgate. How did you fix yours?

The dealer adjusted the boot catch and lubricated it - the boot now needs a firmer hand to close properly but at least the noise has gone. I also tried jamming small rubber strips between the plastic tailgate trim and the metal - that seemed to help.

I've now got a resonance when coming off the throttle from - what seems to be - behind the dash.

    Hope that helps!

  11. Watched a lorry today leave the M18 to join the A1. Followed him in left hand lane down long long slip road to roundabout. Waited behind him for gap to join roundabout (assuming like me he was turning left). So what does he do? Set off from left hand lane, onto roundabout, into outside lane then starts indicating right! Why why why didn't he move into the right hand lane on the slip road?

Then sat in a queue on A14 for almost an hour due to broken down lorry, with matrix sign saying "delay 10 minutes".

    Rant over, thanks guys

  12. Hmmm, all the BMWs I've driven have had very nicely weighted and positive steering, nothing vague at all. Perhaps there was a problem with your 320d?

Nothing was mentioned by the dealer when it had service/MOT although I too did wonder whether the geometry was out (BMW charge £200 + for laser alignment) or the shocks were getting tired. It had covered 87K miles when I traded it in.
