Have solved this problem now, I believe it to be something wrong with my PC. I tried formatting the SD card using FAT32.

Then on a different computer ( Running Windows 10 )  I copied across the files for the sat nav update from a USB stick to SD Card, and noticed that when I unplugged and re-inserted the card back into the Windows 7 PC it was not changing the file extension to .TOT, instead it left it as .txt, so I copied across all the files, inserted into my satnav.
At first the sat said "Source contains navigation database", followed by the message "Insert valid media" but after about 5 minutes the sat nav loaded and it's all working with the 2016/2017 maps.

Very strange problem indeed which is something to do with my Windows 7 PC, very odd!
