  1. Did you know a lot of EV motors run on 3 phase AC πŸ˜‰ No, 3 phase is 120 degrees of phase shift. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-phase_electric_power Also, there's more to risk management than the voltage that may cause electric shocks. High amps causing overheating occurs more often than electric shocks.
  2. What video? Can you post the link to the spreadsheet? Is it hosted on a website such as gov.uk or dvla?
  3. Where did you get that data? From DVLA, Q2 2025: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/vehicle-licensing-statistics-april-to-june-2025/vehicle-licensing-statistics-united-kingdom-april-to-june-2025#new-registrations-of-zero-emission-vehicles No where near 33% of 2023/2024 registrations as you are stipulating.
  4. BEV get the most BIK incentives, PHEV get slightly reduced BIK. https://pod-point.com/guides/business/company-electric-car-tax However you want to look at the numbers, it is certainly not pure ICE compared against all hybrids + BEV. All hybrids earn credit towards ZEV mandate but unlike BEV, 1 sale of hybrid does not count as 1 ZEV credit. Mild hybrids are actually 100% fossil fuel powered, so they are only a hair better than pure ICE cars. I'm simply pointing out BEV demand seems to be strong (based purely on the AT percentage), just 18% pre-reg being advertised, consider dealers need to hit 28% ZEV mandate this year.
  5. Ah okay, sorry, my rookie mistake with AT filters. For 2025 only, less than 100 miles, no written off, no other filters: Over 6000 with the fossil engine, vs 1500 EV. EV accounts for 18.7%. Expand to between 2021 and 2025 to account for possibly older airfield stocks, less than 100 miles, no written off, no other filters: 6800 with fossil engine, 1600 EV. EV account for 18.6%. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?channel=cars&exclude-writeoff-categories=on&make=&maximum-mileage=100&postcode=al2%201bx&refresh=true&sort=relevance&year-from=2021&year-to=2025 Seems like EV demands are going pretty well, considering 28% ZEV mandate for 2025. But we are only seeing 19% pre-reg on the open market. Though hybrids do earn some credit towards it.
  6. More cars of certain powertrain type are being built than demand? Are you saying the Autotrader numbers reflect this over supply?
  7. Absolutely. Then there's 2 possibilities: EV aren't being pre-reg'd en-mass and left in a field/bunker. The numbers reflect the true ratio of pre-reg cars as per consumer demand. EV are being pre-reg'd en-mass and left in a field/bunker. It's all funded by the illuminati.
  8. Hum, I'm seeing a lot more fossil fuel powered vehicles at less than 100 miles...... https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?channel=cars&exclude-writeoff-categories=on&make=&maximum-mileage=100&postcode=al2%201bx&sort=relevance&year-to=2025 (max 100 miles, year 2025, exclude written off) What's going on? Is there some sort of conspiracy where petrol sales are fake? May be it need to be packaged up as a youtube video for conformational bias. /s For heat pumps, monoblock air-to-water heat pump does not require F-gas certified engineer. Air-conditioning units, where pipes run refrigerant gas, does require F-gas certified person. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/qualifications-required-to-work-on-equipment-containing-f-gas
  9. I had 8 kW 4 way multi-split system installed during summer for Β£7000 (no grant, but there is 0% VAT). Basically almost whole house air conditioning that can cool or heat. So far, in these milder weather, I was able to use 100% heat pump and maintain about 1c higher room temperature than central heating. AC blows air and thus removes warmth feeling boundary layer on our skin, so need slightly higher thermostat temperature to feel similar warmth. This works for me to keep combi boiler gas central heating from kicking in. In terms of cost, 99% of my electricity comes from 7p/kWh off peak (or during Octopus free session). So should be cheaper due to efficiency of heat pumps, especially in mild weather. Really need a few years of data to average out the mild weather we are having. The other issue for mass heat pump adoption, beyond lack of skilled labour and poor installs, are the giant water tanks. My house is pretty well insulated, after a bit of my DIY with loft insulation. I set 45c flow temperature and were comfortable last winter. So we can get heat pump with minimum extra work for central heating. BUT we really like the combi boiler's instant hot water and absolutely don't have the space for the water tank. So the combi boiler stays and we'll use the AC units for heating as much as possible. Probably wait for combi boiler sized solutions and/or until there's whispers of end of BUS grant.
  10. It's probably about closing the "spark gap" https://www.lowcarbonhub.org/p/spark-gap/ But I personally think closing the spark gap should be about re-structure wholesale electricity bidding backend, ensure electricity price isn't tied to gas price, rather than making an essential energy source unaffordable.
  11. If you are interested or want the truth from this, it's worth look into those adverts? They are most likely spam, and wrap solar package in a very high APR loan. As far as I know, there is no longer any government support on solar. The only support was feed in tariff (FIT) that ended about 9-10 years ago. The smart export guarantee (SEG) payments are entirely market driven and paid by energy supplier. edit: I'm speaking for available-to-all and in England. I've not looked into means-tested solar assistances.
  12. Emerging tech that is beneficial to everyone always needs a helping hand to speed up bridging the gap from early adopters to mainstream. Look at solar, it doesn't need any subsidies now. FIT helped the industry to mature and now it is cheapest form of energy generation. If you really want the truth, write to your politicians to stop giving fossil fuels some of those $7 TRILLION subsidies: https://www.imf.org/en/Blogs/Articles/2023/08/24/fossil-fuel-subsidies-surged-to-record-7-trillion
  13. Indeed, it could a hard sell. But there is always something bigger and better by spending slightly more. I think it's the physical size that's really attractive. R5 is not A segment car. It can't fit into same space as the Twingo. These little cars are excellent secondary vehicles, where EV's should have started in the first place, IMO.
  14. As always, devil is in the details........ and there isn't any yet. Introduction of general PPM for all cars? May be adjustment to fuel duty to compensate? (eg. make 5p fuel duty discount permanent, move it to 3p per mile) I whole heartedly agree. There's a perceived tax hole need plugging. For EV only? Against this idea, it doesn't incentivise people at all. For EV only AND 5p fuel duty discount still in place? GTFO One thing is for 100% certain, EV mileage reporting wouldn't be done via AC charge points. Simply because it is not possible, hardware isn't there.
  15. Price is the most important detail. How much is it going to end up. Everything else are secondary. Best part is that it has CCS rapid charging, makes it a truly viable ICE replacement EV. For people to get about normally and very occasional trips away.
  16. Oh, look, BEV are cheaper. Time to move the goal post to acceleration even though you previously said it doesn't matter.
  17. The Vauxhall Frontier BEV is indeed cheaper than ICE-hybrid, shattering the old view that EV's are more expensive than ICE cars. I've also seen reports of Β£2k cheaper, however it's not the case when I looked it up. https://store.vauxhall.co.uk/selector/configurable/frontera-suv/design/electric-44kwh-113ps-automatic-with-fixed-gear-electric/carbon-black-metallic-paint/grey-cloth-seats?channel=b2c Not that I'd ever consider a Stellantis car: Unnecessarily coding hardware to vehicle is not unique to EV's though. Fitting the replacement is hard work due to van shape, but what actually needs doing seems straightforward: mainly disconnect cables and reconnect cables. We really need more trained (don't lick the orange cables) garage technicians to work on EV's at all indie garages, it not rocket science.
  18. I've seen the line, and decided to hit the report button. By the way, there is a climate thread in my signature with all the facts and figures.
  19. IF that were true, for example, overwhelming new research says ICE cars are better than EV with respect to climate change. I honestly don't see any problem, I'll evaluate evidences and make appropriate decision based on all the new evidence available to me. No one is know-it-all. Just need to be humble and accept changing world based on new evidences. On the rubbishing part, I don't think that's a fair assessment of what has been gone on in this area of the forum. Comparisons had been made as people switched or trying to show the differences, but I don't think targeted attacks were done to make specific individuals owning ICE cars feel bad.
  20. Practical reasons, I can understand. Thankfully there is still 20% cars that can be not full ZEV after 2030, for people who REALLY can't get any charging or must do mega miles daily. Financial reasons? Second hand cars are always available. EV's are very slowly coming into the budget segment, example such as Renault 5 for Β£20k and Ford Puma EV being cheaper than petrol versions: https://www.speakev.com/threads/are-bevs-getting-more-expensive.193933/?post_id=3840652#post-3840652 As previously mentioned, public rapid charging with membership are cheaper than some diesel and most petrol. I agree it's a trade off, that's why we aren't seeing 100% ZEV mandate in 2030. I respect both of your opinion. I also wish to say it is my opinion that the ZEV mandate is borderline not fast enough. This is the thing with politics, we can all have different opinions, there is no one truth for everything. The only thing I CANNOT stand is posters spreading misinformation and FUD.
  21. At same time, continue selling ICE presents a real problem for the climate due to them lasting 10+ years and emission from them are constant (per mile). This problem had been talked about many times on here and please refer to the thread in my signature. By the time every single ICE sold this year are phased out, it would have emitted way more damage than a few burning EV could ever do over same period. Remembering fire events are rarer than mass fleet of ICE going about their business every day. So based on that, banning sale of new ICE cars is absolutely the right thing to do, as quickly as possible. As EV adoption are ramped up, risk assessments and fire fighting processes will catch up to solve problems you've identified. As I don't have the knowledge, I don't comment on possible solutions, this is in no way burying head in the sand. It is knowing when to shut up. Science is always evolving. Having a paper say one thing does not make it fact as new research data and tech emerge. It is not for likes of you and I (as in, not in scientific community) to judge what is true or not. What we should do, however, is to take critical papers as summary of research data so far and try to learn from it. It is most probably the truth as far as humanity know at time of its writing.
  22. Thank you so much for sharing this. I've read through it in depth. This bit on LFP is very important and probably news to a lot of people: As with all things, it's a case of pros and cons. The LFP manufacturers have been saying they are safer based on abuses, but have not holistically evaluated their behaviour in a thermal runaway fire event. My takeaway from the paper is that, well as with most paper, more research is needed, more data is needed to better understand. With so many different variations within broad chemistries, would be good if battery manufacturers publish white papers providing data to feed into independent university papers. Also, it's that word again, risk. With critical research paper like these and more research/data, better risk management can be done.
  23. And complaining about a problem you've identified on forums is in any way useful... because? I believe the problem will eventually be solved. It may not be in the same way, where the fire is bought under control, it may be new process or on the spot problem solving to secure the vehicle preventing other damages. Or risk assessment on covered car park rapid charging, as an example. Or many other ways to quantify and manage the fire risk. End of the day, I don't have the knowledge to have any meaningful input into this problem. If you do, the most useful thing you can do is to write to your local fire department with your suggestions. Successful (and failed) cases are always used as case studies by other departments across the world.
  24. Well then, best write to your fire department to voice your concerns and encourage them to work on solutions. Holistically, from birth to grave, EV are better for the planet compared to ICE vehicles. Proof of this had been posted many times years ago, it would be even better for EV now as the grid is cleaner now. I think last part answers the why so little EV question. There just isn’t many cheap runabouts yet. I saw an Citreon C1 the other day and I was saying to my wife, that looks perfect replacement for her Leaf. But alas, no EV version. Come to think of it, the perception that EV are expensive is perpetuated by other manufacturer not willing to bring out cars like Dacia Springs to replace their local ICE runabouts.
  25. With Tesla, official tow hitch can be fitted at any time, almost same price as when purchased during config. Model Y Tow Package
