  1. Thank you both for the input. I would normally have made a bee line for the driver door rubber shroud BUT. the lady who owns the car gave told me that whilst driving the driver window started going up and down by itself then went down and stayed down. at the same time the rear wiper came on.  I made the assumption (right;y or wrongly) that ruled out the driver door loom and was a bus issue.  At the time (november) I could do no more than pull the fuses and wind the window up by hand. I am trying to look for a possible common cause for the two symptoms.  I am no stranger to co-incidence but the two issues happening at exacty the same time seems rather suspect.

Thank you again for anay suggestions as to where to start.

  2. I could really do with some input here if anyone can help. Now the weather is a little better I want to take a look at this. The only location for the unit I can find is for a left hooker under the plastic panel, would it be the same place or on the offside for a RHD model and still cant seem to find if the unit would need coding or is a simple replacement, like for like. First things first though, where is it, N/S or O/S ?

  3. A friend of mine has a 2009 fabia that has decided to throw a hissy fit. Driver window went up and down a few times by itself then all the way down and stayed put. At the same time the rear wiper aquired a mind of its own. Having checked the obvious and driver door loom I have wound the window up by hand and pulled the fuses. I suspect it is a problem with the convenience unit. I have yet to pull it out but can anyone tell me if it is coded to the car, if so can anyone point me in the direction for unit repair services. I have had a good trawl through the forum for an answer but haven't found anything relevant. It can stay as it is for the moment given the weather but it will need sorting soon.

  4. Just picked up an 09 for a friend.  It seems it needs a double unlock on the remote to release all the doors. Can this be changed to overall unlock with one click on the vehicle or would it need to be via vcds.  I think it's a poverty spec with manual window winders in the rear and electrics in the front. Also, apart from going aftermarket can the ICE be swapped out  easily for any skoda unit with usb or sd card media. I have no problem fitting a single din unit for her but thought I would look up options first.

  5. That is brilliant, Thank you so much. Good review too. Finding a decent auto up here is a bit of a task and pure coincidence that I found this Skoda. It does have a 111,000 on it but good history. As it is for a disabled lady I certainly don't want to get it wrong for her, just trying to find something half decent she can get a few years out of. She does less than 5000 a year and all local ten mile round trips. I am intending to go and view it wednesday so she can take a look and see how getting in and out is.

Thank you. but yet again it seems I have already tried this. In the service menu I have no option to reset it. The only thing I have not tried yet is the trip reset and the article seems a little confusing on that score. I'll take a look at that in the morning, I do feel a little less of a numpty though as it seems I tried all the usual methods and routes before posting for help.

  7. I am sure it must be staring me in the face but I can't find it in the book, on here or anywhere else for that matter. Those methods I have found online don't seem to relate to my car. 2013 facelift elegance. I have "Service Due" on the maxidot when I start up. If I go into service there is no option to reset it, just gives me the miles "0" now overdue 1 day.

Can any kind soul point me in the right direction?

Ah, having done more delving looks like it may be time for me to invest in ross-tech gear

In the Jazz driver's defence their view would've been blocked by the buildings and parked cars. Jazz driver probably should've crept forwards slowly while looking to their right, although it could be argued that you were going too fast.

I would not consider 27 mph too fast and considering I was well into view when they continued on. If you look closely you should see that she was not looking at all in my direction. That is not a difficult junction to come out from and she should have been able to see me before I saw her and yet she continued out and her head was turned toward the passenger. She could clearly see the road was clear from oncoming traffic. Sorry, but in my book that is pure lack of observation.

Ennie - I couldn't advise specifically on the Superb but from experience of having everything from steelies to 20's on VAG group cars you might want to try different tyres first to improve the ride.  Dropping from 18 to 16 on such a large car might not give you a look you want (maybe you do just a thought) and potholes are still potholes!

Thank you and yes, your comment has merit. Since making this post I have decided to stick with the 18s for now. My original reason for considering the change was in main due to my wife who suffers with major back issues. Although she rarely travels in the car I thought the harder ride would be more difficult for her but in fact the opposite is true and after a trip out, some discussion and a  little logical reasoning it made sense. My Rover was a very soft floaty ride and ate potholes very well, however this did mean a fair amount of bounce. Although the Superb has a harder ride the bounce is less, so the shock is over quickly with no recoil/double whammy from the bounce effect. I hope that makes sense. When it comes to renew the 18 tyres  I'll have a chat with my expert tyre guy but for now I'll stick with what I have and save myself a fair amount of money as well.

  10. I am new to Skoda and it's this sort of thing that gives me cause for concern and makes me so angry. Being at the mercy of a service department. What does strike me here is that old familiar story of taking the customer for a fool. They diagnosed turbo sensor, replaced it then it turns out to be wiring to the sensor. Are they saying it was wiring AND sensor, surely not. They also "felt" the sensor was not covered. Hm, could this be because the sensor was fine and need someone else to pay for their mistake. Maybe you should tell them you "feel" they should just sort it. I'm sorry I can't be of any help to you but I do have experience of people being taken to the cleaners for garage mistakes and it makes my blood boil.

  11. Although I was determined not to start spending large amounts on the new car I am seriously looking at replacing the 18" alloys down to 16" to improve ride. I'm considering Calibra Vintage 16" that are stated as having a 35 offset and supplied with spigot rings. Thanks to Chimaera who was kind enough to post up the specs for my car, they should be a ET 45. Is there a down side to fitting the 35s with spigot rings. Any comments regarding this issue, the wheels or other suggestions would be most welcome.

One other advantage with the 16" - got over 35k miles out of the original Continentals. The 18" wheels look better though.

I thought the same about all season tyres - and vowed when I got my next car I would get a set of winter tyres/wheels( which I did of course). However when the summer tyres were at the end of their life I though I'd try a set of Cross Climates as thy are summer tyre based. They have been fab during the summer especially in some of the heavy rain conditions we have been having recently. The big suprise is how quiet they are - quieter thaan the original Continentals. This combined with the quiet engine has made it a sublime cruiser.

Thank you for the photos,They look ok. I have time to source alloys and tyres to suit. and run the 18"s in the meantime as they have almost new tyres fitted.
The wheel change size will make very little difference to insurance. I doubt there is anyone foolish to make such changes to a  car and NOT inform their insurance company is there ?

Yes, looks are a consideration of course. Don't really want to spoil the look but I find the ride a little too harsh. I need to do some  trawling and see what Superbs look like with 16" on board with various alloys. Tyre wear as you say, is also something to take into account.

Mine are the Spectrum 16" alloys  - fitted to both the poverty spec Superb II and some versions of the Yeti (with different tyre size)

I have two sets - one with winter tyres on (although I'm trying a set of Michelin Cross Climates on the summer set - will still swap to my Conti TS850's in the depths of winter though, for now)

Thank you. Local Bobby uses the cross climates and says they are pretty good although I have always considered all seasons a bit of a compromise but  my winter set with alloys went with my Rover. My tyre guru says that winters on the 18" should be pretty good so I may hang onto them but for now I'm on a decent 16" alloy hunt with a conservative look to get a bit of a floaty ride back. I am also aware this has been a bit of a thread hijack so do apologise to the OP for that.
