Similar problem with my 2013 1.2 tsi. When it is cold outside (below 5 degrees) I can hear the rattle on startup. Not always, sometimes. Changed the tensioner for the latest revision but I think it hasn't resolved the issue completely... In this topic I described what we tried to resolve the issue:

So my mechanic changed the tensioner and we also removed the mahle oil filter for the OEM filter. I would say that the rattle is not completely gone but it is less noticeable and less often. Before we changed the tensioner the rattle was noticeable on cold starts, but now I can hear some kind of a metallic sound rather than the rattle... Also when I rev the engine up to 3k rpm and let go the gas pedal between 2,5-2k a metallic sound appears and then goes away.... That must be the chain, not the wastegate actuator? Right? The tensioner can be replaced without special tools and no oil drainage is needed. The tensioner must be tightened to 60 Nm. We used the latest revision of the tensioner - 03F 109 507 F

I've read that you have replaced the chain tensioner... Have you had any problems related to chain issues on the 1.2 tsi? As you have a remapped engine, your chain is more stressed comparing to the engines with original maps so it would be interesting to hear your experience and maintenance tips. How often do you change oil and what kind of oil do you use?

Spoke with independent vw mechanic. He is well aware that these problems and that they can be caused by faulty installed oil filters. Just to clarify, last oil change was 3 months ago and the service was made in a another independent garage which is not a vw specialist. So there is a strong possibility that the oil filter is the cause. Since the last oil change the car made around 2-2,5k km and the problem with cold start chain rattles was first noticed few days ago ( I haven't driven the car much in the last few months because of the COVID-19 situation). I have also mentioned that to my independent vw mechanic and he said that the rattles don't have to occur right after the oil and filter change... They can but not in all cases... We agreed that we will check/change the oil filter and also change the tensioner... If that doesn't help, we'll have to change the whole chain set. I'll report after service... P.S. the car is 1.2 tsi, CBZB with 75k km, oil services so far every 5-7k km to provide sufficient lubrication to the chain. Recently the car was updated with Revo stage 1 map. But the car made only 500 km(most of that was normal driving) on that map so I seriously doubt that that had any impact on the chain stretching issue.

Did a quick search about this topic... On cold starts on my 1.2 tsi I have recently noticed a chain rattle that last up to 2 seconds(this wasn't the case so far). If I leave the car running for 30 sec, turn off the car and start the car again the noise doesn't come back. So, I think that is due to faulty chain tensioner.... My initial thought was first to change the tensioner and then if it doesn't help to check the chain for stretching... Can the chain tensioner be replaced without special tools or oil drainage? Is it as simple as unscrewing the old part and screwing in the new one? Thank you!

I haven't tried it yet but carpro perl should suit your needs. From what I've heard and seen on youtube it lasts several weeks(of course depending on the weather). There are also products from different manufacturers with similar effect - sonax, meguair's.... Here is a link to a really good detailing channel that tested Carpro perl:

Did you apply after polishing some kind of protection product? What kind? Maybe you could use something to renew plastic trim.... Car looks nice! Good job!

Do you know the rated power(kw) of car? It is probably belt driven, but we'll be able to confirm after you give us the rated power of the car... This is the engine bay of the EA211 (belt driven - 66kw, 81kw) versions: This is the EA111 engine bay (chain driven - 63kw, 77kw) versions: Surface rust on exhaust system is very common on these cars ( talking about chain driven versions). The back boxes tend to have cracks/patches of rust on the outside protective layer. I would say that you should add that to your 50k maintenance plan or ask your dealer to change it now if it is really bad...

My car was produced in 12/2013 so I believe that it has the latest chain, sprockets and tensioner set. It has done 75k km and so far I haven't had any problems with the chain issue. I believe that it will eventually need a new chain set, but I'm aware of the problems it can cause so I keep my eye on it (or should I say a ear...). Furthermore, I change the oil every 6-7k km to ensure that the chain and tensioner are well lubricated. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that a lot of issues related with the chain are caused by poor maintenance - what I mean when I say that is that the cars on longlife service intervals are more affected due to poor lubrication and often low oil levels which lead to friction and increased working temperatures... I'm aware that the increased power and torque figures will certainly have an impact on the life span of the chain set, but I wanted to hear from others, which already remapped their car and have been driving their car for a longer period of time/km, what negative aspects did they had to deal with? Also a known problem with these engines is the wastegate actuator? Can that issue be related to the remapping? Mine had a problem with it. It failed when the car was still under warranty (believe the car had around 20k km). After that I haven't had any problems with it...

Does the remap enhance chain stretching issue on these engines? Or are there any other negative side effects that can be related to the increased power and torque figures? Thinking of remapping my 1.2 tsi CBZB and gathering information before I make a final decision....
