Ah, yes - swift, simple and final solutions, those . But surely there must be alternatives?

Here in Sweden corporal punishment in schools was banned in the late 50's and altogether in 1979. Sure we have our share of ASBO's, alcohol and so on, but the situation is hardly any worse than in the UK, probably better. So (the fear of) corporal punishment might not be the simple solution.
I don't think that the occasional smacked bottom will damage a child for life. But my guess is that those of you who have own experience of such treatment, and find it OK, also have memories of parents who loved you, cared for you and had time for you. This, IMHO, is the crucial factor.
Parents who don't care for their children (and the children's delinquent behaviour) can be found everywhere. Among families on social benefit, sure, but also among the ones that are well off, with both parents working round the clock to manage the mortgage, the holidays abroad, the cars (no Skodas to be sure).
Swedish author Hjalmar Soderberg put it brilliantly in the novel "Doctor Glas" written in 1905 (my translation that's far from perfect):
One wants to be loved;
for want of it, admired;
for want of it, feared;
for want of it, hated and despised.
One wants to invoke a feeling in other people. The soul hates void and strives f

We first met att the Uni 35 years ago, but in those days we were just good friends (should anyone here have memories of student's life in the early 70's you might remember that that could mean a lot of things but "good friends" is still a proper description).
Well, then she married this other guy and left town, I left town without getting married... in 1990 she (newly divorced) suddenly called...:eek:
There was no looking back. We even legalised our liasion three years ago. She drives the Octavia, I drive the Felicia...
As Shakespeare put it (although that might fit better in that other thread):
All's well that ends well; still the fine's the crown;
Whate'er the course, the end is the renown.

I guess that we all, from time to time, put forward prejudicated or discriminating judgements about this and that. And of course examples could be found here att Briskoda.net. But even then such opinions are most often discussed and refuted (by some) in a very civilised manner.
So IMHO the community itself isn't discriminating - see my earlier posts about a friendly atmosphere and so on. I haven't seen (yet) any replies containing "You stupid *ss" or anything like that.

Although I'm a freshman here my answer to the original question would be No. When I compare Briskoda to some other fora and communities I think that the general spirit of the discussions is very open-minded and welcoming and that even quite simple questions are answered seriously. This I would say are good signs of non-discriminating behaviour.
This thread is a good example, I think: no lashing out, no sarcasm. The posting from Stuart J seems to me a bit provocative, but it could be me misunderstanding.
And the same goes for the other fora I've visited here. OK, in the Off-topic forum there might be some postings that could make you wonder if the door to the sty of male chauvinist pigs has been properly closed, but even those examples are pretty harmless.
But of course, it might be that I'm not able to notice everything. I'm after all white, male (and 53), born into the Lutheran Church of Sweden which I left reaching my maturity, of middle-class origin and with a university degree. So by and large I'm on the privileged side.

...should have posted this earlier. A nice forum to be a member of, I like the friendly and welcoming atmosphere present in the postings.
Two Skodas in the family: I sent my 15 year old Nissan into retirement this year (well-deserved with 200,000 miles on the clock) and got myself a -98 Felicia 1.6 Estate that have just passed 45,000 miles (just tuned in, that is). The Missus drives an -00 Octavia 1.6 Estate since last year.
Both cars still young enough to be reasonably reliable and trouble-free (I know, all Skodas are perfectly reliable...), but old enough for me to appreciate the tips and tricks I can find here. And hopefully I'll be able to contribute in the future.
Best wishes from Sweden!

Suffered from the well-known windshield leak problem this summer. First I tried silicone sealant (done it before with success on our old Audi) but this time it didn't work. The glazier replaced the rubber seal using a good deal of sealant and now it's perfectly dry. I was told that old seals that have hardened a bit are almost hopeless to fix properly - replacement the only safe option. Cost me

You're so right about the annoying duplicates but they come from the original posting.
As soon as the tasks I get paid for gets too boring I'll try to fix it and update with your latest contributions.
