  1. Have a look on parkers.co.uk to get prices - I had a quick look and the difference between 06 and 56 is about £500 (£11425 vs £10899). Often worth buying a Parkers guide book too as I don't think you can access the mileage adjustment charts online (to increase or decrease value according to mileage). Average mileage for a one year old car is 10k, I think. I would value your trade in and value the one you're buying (taking into account mileage on both). You should be able to get the car for a little bit less than the difference (depends on your haggling skills). Hope that helps.
  2. My first car was a '94 Rover Metro, which I bought in '98. Loved the willing engine, positive gear change, wonderful non-assisted steering and very tidy handling. But in the four years I owned it: -it failed an MOT because of a suspension problem -it needed a petrol tank as soon as it was out of warranty -it needed the fuse box replacing (this caused a breakdown) -it needed a clutch at 65k miles And of course I didn't drive 80 miles a day back then. Glad I didn't have a big accident in it too (no passive safety to speak of). Still have fond memories though and to be fair most early 90s cars were nowhere near there counterparts today in terms of build and reliability. I'm really sorry Rover is gone but when you look at the competition in the market at the moment (Skoda is a good example) it's easy to see why they had such a hard time.
  3. Thanks once again. I think my dealer is a decent one but I don't think they'll be able to help, as you say. I ordered a 9mm gasket from the VW dealer opposite where I work on Friday and I plan to fit it next weekend all being well. Will report back on my progress.
  4. The stutter happens at about 1800 rpm in first - should have been clearer about that. Doesn't happen all the time though - done a 40 mile trip this morning and it was good as gold. The guy from dealer mentioned the VRS problem when I spoke to him - I didn't spend much time looking at that on this forum because I assumed it only affected the VRS. He also said MAFs usually go on Octys, not Fabias. Anyway, I'll do my homework on the VRS stutter and have a good chat with the guys from the dealer on Monday. Maybe my MAF theory is a red herring? Hope I can get this sorted - it's occasionally spoiling my enjoyment of a VERY nice car. Thanks all!
  5. I was hoping this post would be the tale of how I wrapped this up without any major fuss but I
  6. Just one word of warning. Before you proceed with anything with the insurance company make sure you are fairly sure how it will affect your no claims and your premium. I lost 3 years worth when I was hit by an uninsured driver several years ago. Admitedly I was only about 24 at the time but I was seriously stung with my premiums for the next several years and it cost me far more than getting my car fixed myself would have.
  7. Hi There! Came across this site while doing a bit of research and realised I find all this stuff really interesting! I'm no mechanic, but I like reading the odd car mag and LOVE my 06 Fabia 1.9 TDI (my second, in fact). Might end up asking for advice on some niggling problems I'm having (hopefully not) but either way it seemed rude not to say hello! Anyway, GREAT site. Ian
