  1. You make a very good point with my original cover having about 2mm distortion and I have read of people stripping threads...... New aftermarket cover going on this week and I will be using a 1/4 drive torque wrench but not a Fisher Price one! Bit by bit my oil consumption is dropping
  2. No joy but thanks Breezy_Pete. I have just found what I believe is the procedure for a PD engine. The bolt torque is 10Nm
  3. Can someone please help me. I'm trying to find within Techies downloads, the fitting instructions for the PD rocker cover. I've seen one for a latter Golf and it gives tightening sequence and location for additional silicone.
  4. I've just found an oil leak from the injector harness plug and will sort this when fitting a new rocker cover.
  5. Hi I purchased a complete set for around 40 euros which includes a radial shaft seal which needs to be replaced. I had slight wear on the shaft where the seals runs but had no issues. If your doing this yourself watch the alignment of the pump shaft when refitting
  6. I would appreciate some feedback on the cure to a rocker cover leak. I have the original Skoda cover which is bowed and leaks down the rear of the engine on the tandem pump side. I have already re fitted it with a new gasket and added additional silicone on retaining bolt seals plus additional silicone around the main gasket. Time for a new aftermarket cover which I notice have additional ribs to stop distortion. Can anyone recommend a manufacturer and is the any tips on fitting?
  7. I have a lot of oil around base of oil cooler with car at 230,000 km. Do I just replace oil seals or fit new oil cooler at same time. I read these are a known problem with PD engine but have no signs of oil in coolant system.
  8. My 2001 1.9 has listed in original Skoda spec card 2 sizes 1. 185/60/R14 82H/6Jx14 ET43. (Steel rims) 2. 195/50/R15 (Alloy) I had a mixture of ET35 and ET43 offsets which caused an issue with certification.
  9. Just following up on seal replacement. I did fit an aftermarket PTFE one piece seal which leaked even though I removed the sump and took great care in fitting. From here I decided to fit the old 3 piece VW system 1. radial lip seal (Corteco 12015257B) 2. aluminium mounting flange (VW 055103173B) 3. gasket (Elring 915.728) 4. gasket cement (Loctite 5923) No more leaking rear main seal! Other leaks that I found and sorted were 1. Tandem pump (oil and diesel leaking) 2. Coolant flange below tandem pump 3. Clutch slave cylinder 4. leak from 'VW' embossed flange under gearbox. Hope this may help others
  10. Thank you Brezzy_Pete and nice to now there is free diagnostic software available. The fuse definitely looked to have cracked with no signs of thermal damage, good point on mechanical failure. These PD engines do rattle a bit. Re the plug if you have time it would be appreciated.
  11. I had the dreaded PS warning light in June, topped up fluid and replaced the fuse on the battery (red/black wire). Since then I have fitted a 80Ah battery (was 52 Ah) and tested alternator. All was well until recently when temps dropped, rain rolled in and so did the PS warning light. The vehicle is a 2001, 1.9 TDi Fabia ATD and I want to gain a better understanding of why the TRW electro-hydraulic pumps fail. TRW and others sell new with a core exchange and my aim is to strip, test and replace anything serviceable that has failed and save a bucket of money (if possible). At this point I don't have a scan tool and will look into buying VCDS in the near future. Any thoughts as to why the fuse blew? The PS fluid level was down a centimetre back in June but I can't speak historically. I binned the foam pump cover as it was loaded full of oil/water and I understand the reservoir can leak from the O-ring. Can PS fluid/water enter down into the electrical plugs and damage components on the PCB? People have commented about holes in the base of the female plugs on the pump body. Also I have read about transistor failure on the pump control PCB. Below is a link testing supply voltages and transistor replacement. Is is possible the steering angle sensor can somehow overloaded the pump transistor leading to its failure? For anyone interested the transistor is IRL3705N. I will also look at the capacitors as car is at 230,000 km. An old topic now but any feedback would be appreciated.
  12. Thanks Sepuichrave. Are Skodas fitted with magnetic drain plugs from factory?
  13. I currently have the gearbox out and was considering giving the gearbox a flush as the oil wasn't flash. Is it ok to clean a manual box with syncros? I will be replacing the input shaft seal while in there - gearbox is an EWT 5 speed. I've cleaned industrial gearboxes before as instructed by manufactuer and had great results. Any feedback appreciated.
  14. I will have it replaced then and thanks for feedback on brands.
