  1. ...I sincerely hope if he recovers - which knowing the luck these people have he probably will - that he gets a proper punishment and not just 12 months in prison followed by a driving ban

If he survives then hopefully he'll be a vegetable or at the very least severely disabled. :thumbdwn::thumbup:

  2. I went to this on Saturday and found I had the (un)enviable ;) honour of being paired with Nick (ncarring) in the morning and Chris (scoobychris) in the afternoon. If you're thinking about going to one of these days then go for it, it's definately not a 'wheel-shuffling, pipe-and-slippers, rug-on-the-parcelshelf' day.

I can't be ar$ed typing it all out again so below is a copy and paste of the PM I sent to both Chris and Nick thanking them for Sat and how I've been using the tips and techniques I picked up.

    Hi Chris and Nick,

I'd just like to say thank you for Saturday, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day and I feel I picked up quite a few good techniques. (As did my Dad)

Loading up the suspension as I'm entering, and keeping on the power through, a corner has definately helped smooth out some of the ****-poor road surfaces around here and increseased my confidence and understanding in the car's cornering capabilities. (but not to the stage I'm trying to take every corner at 80 ;)) After having got feedback on overtaking from both of you I also feel a lot calmer during the manoeuvre, confident that I've considered it before comitting to it. I also find I'm keeping it in gear more now instead of changing up as soon as it reached 2,000rpm  (it's a diesel remember :D). It's a bit early to tell for definate yet, plus I've been for a few spirited drives, but fuel effeciency seems to be up a bit because of this, possibly as it's not 'struggling' as much as before.

I haven't really been able to use the limit point so much as the daily commute only has long, sweeping corners. I'm heading out towards North-East Herts / Cambs on Saturday so no doubt I'll find some roads similar and more suited to the driving at Andover, I just have to scour Google Maps now to try and see if I find a hairpin like the one at Wherwell :D

All in all I'd recommend it to other people, in fact I already have, and we even finished the day off with Steve (fatbadger) in a 3 Skoda convoy around the North West M25. Still wasn't spotted

    Cheers guys

    Matt

  3. It seems like Swindon Borough Council are trying to pull out of their Safety Camera Partnership as they believe there are better ways they can spend their money on to make the roads safer.

BBC NEWS | England | Wiltshire | Town may cut speed camera funding

Anne Snelgrove, Labour MP for South Swindon and parliamentary private secretary to the Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly, ... has launched a Hands off Our Speed Cameras campaign.

I can't see many people rushing to join that campain

  4. Glad they didnt show the Carrera cup...

It's not the most exciting series is it ;):D

It was a shame that both the Seats had the same serious problems in the third race.

As SWMBO said, "Giovanardi must have put water in their diesel"

  5. I,m in Sloavkia at the moment and diesel out here is at 44,4 Slovak Crowns which is around 1,168 of our Great British Pounds. A bit cheaper than we pay but as a percentage of income it,s a damn sight more expensive.

Checking out petrolprices.com it seems like the prices have stabilised over in Blighty since I filled up last Friday.

  6. How did you turn a Transit into a convertible?

A height restriction said it was an inch higher than the Transit I was driving.

Turns out it wasn't :o The front half of the roof was taken cleanly off, so cleanly you couldn't tell anything was wrong until you looked inside :D

  7. Not a problem Swedish :)

...I wonder if the differences can have something to do with urbanisation? In mainly rural communities everyone is a farmer. But in countries with a lot of towns and town dwellers you'll get names telling others about your occupation...

I've thought this before. In a village where everyone knows everyone else 'son-of-xxx' is enough to differentiate between people who share the same forename. In citys and towns it would get a bit more complicated as you could get literally tens of Erik Erikssons etc. to try and sort between. Much easier to say 'Erik the baker' which must have led to simply Erik Baker.

  8. 'leverage' used as a verb is my personal hate - my colleagues know I'll go for the throat if that one's used.

There is no situation where the verb 'use' cannot be substituted for 'leveraged'.

I've noticed all the American ads in magazines at work are using (or should that be 'leveraging' :D) that word. What the feck's wrong with the verb 'use'?

They've also started calling armed forces 'warfighters'. WTF?

A typical ad I read this morning from Jane's Navy International:

...leveraging an established, effective design, Centurion protects the lives of warfighters, civilians...

  9. -ski is an almost exclusively Polish suffix with Czech and Slovak surnames following the Germanic (well German and English/British anyway) trait of being based on occupation/location. Funnily enough one of their most common surnames Kovac (Ko-vach) is also one of ours; Smith :)

The -ova suffix is used for female surnames as the two languages being very gender specific. SWMBO's father's surname is Sutor (Shuu-tor - Shoe-maker or cobbler) while her and her mother's surname is Sutorova. Their grammar dictates that even when we marry and she takes an English surname, when using Slovak her surname will be Masonova.

I've always wondered what -ic (ich) form the old Yougoslav countries means though.

  10. ...Steve - It may seem obvious to you in a car but I can tell you from experience that when in a large vehicle you drive under a bridge...

As I found out when I turned a Transit into a convertable two years ago

I imagine the driver will have some explaining to do....

  11. I'm thinking about becoming one. Is anyone on here a race marshal or has been a race marshal?

I've read up on the basics and printed off an application form for the BMMC's "Day on the Bank". I'm just looking for anyone that's done it's opinion / views / experiences / helpful hints really.

I'm looking at the Silverstone track induction on the 26-27th July as it's the closest to me. Hopefully my cunning plan of watching and getting more involved with motorsport for free will pay off :D

    Cheers,

    Matt

  12. I've got just under half a tank which should see me safely through a week of any panic buying and then I'm off on holiday for three weeks.

Hopefully when I come back there'll have been a revolution and the media editors that whip this kind of thing up will have been strung up.
