  1. Thanks all. Picture and FS III cast into caliper confirms smaller disc. I'm of an age where I started out on MK2 Cortinas, and if you had a question, then you could only call on who you knew. Now the network is a little bigger!
  2. Mine were the same when I swapped them out. Doesn't answer what the cause was/is, but gives you some confidence that there's nothing wrong specific to your car
  3. Thanks, I'll have a look in the morning. What will this tell me - the precise part code?
  4. Need to replace front discs on my 2008 diesel 1.9, but there seems to be two options available: one 22mm thick / 280 mm dia; and the other 25mm thick / 288mm dia https://www.carparts4less.co.uk/brake-discs I appreciate that there's not a lot in it, but wondered if there's a correct on to go for?
  5. Just bumping this query to check if there's a simple technique/process to follow to spilt the brake pad connector? Pull back a tab somewhere, or press with a small blade screwdriver at a specific point?
  6. That's exactly the connector that I'm looking to separate. Have pushed and pulled on clips that I can see, but with no luck yet. Haven't pull too hard as trying to be careful not to damage the loom. Is there one specific clip that needs to be pushed/pulled?
  7. Fair point in that a picture is worth a 1000 words! For identification, this is the connector, but not mine as the photo has lifted from a different thread - separated in this example.
  8. This question has the makings on an 'easy when know how' situation, but struggling to separate the connection between the pad and the loom on the suspension leg. Is there a knack or technique? Asking as don't want to pull in the wrong way and damage the connection. Thanks
  9. Speaking from recent experience, as others have said, it will almost certainly be a sized bearing within the heater. What I would add is that you can unclip the motor from the drum fan to get to the bottom bearing - it was that one that had sized on mine.
  10. I think so too, but not sure how to get to the bushes and bearings; it looks like a sealed unit. How do you access the bushes?
  11. Fan has stopped working. I have got the fan out and it's very stiff to turn. Is it possible to strip these motors down to try and free off the bearings? Tried a topic search, but couldn't see anything there. Thanks.
  12. To paraphrase the Chinese proverb, it is true to say that we're living through interesting times. In that context, it would be safe to assume that the disruptive impact of covid, brexit, climate, energy etc will bring opportunities alongside pitfalls. The thought that came to mind is what considered and sensible investment opportunities are there out there? I stress considered and sensible, very much in the image of why we're Skoda drivers because we're not unduly influenced by advertisers forth and bluster, and recognise the fundamental strength of the Skoda product. With that as an operating context, ie discounting the wonder 'Tesla' crystal ball predictions, what investments should we consider? As a starting question(s), any thoughts on which is the best investment platform to use; and what is the best starting medium, bonds, unit trusts, stocks and shares ICA's etc?
  13. H, Longstanding Octavia owner, having recently moved from 06 to 08 model. One of the issues I hade with the 06 was both cills rusting from the inside to outside. The cills on the 'new' car are in fine condition, but as I tend to keep cars for a long time, was looking to 'waxoil' them or sothing similar. Are there existing maintenance/drain holes in the cills that I could access to spray the inside, or do I need to drill and plug? If drill and plug is the way to go, where best to drill?
  14. If I was to get the exact part no. of the airbag control module, and replace like for like, is the consensus of all you knowledgeable forumites that this would fit in?
  15. Thank you, this is a reassuring message. I will check what vehicle the donor module came out of; the message I got back from the garage was that although it cleared the warning light, it wasn't speaking to the rest of the car.
  16. All, It's been a bit of a long running saga trying to get my fathers long-stood Octavia back on the road. Problems with the PRNDS all sorting and now down to one thing - the Airbag control module has failed. We know this as a temporary donor air bag control module has been tried which got rid the warning light. The garage has suggested c£700 for a new Skoda airbag control module, which they could code to the car. The question is one of whether it's possible to source a second-hand air bag module and get that re-coded to the car? Has anyone any experience of doing this? I would be very very appreciative of tapping into the collective knowledge of the forum
  17. Bit of a long-running saga, in that I have PRNDS (and traction lights) showing, which was traced to a ECU fault. The ECU has been fixed, and it came back, car starts and runs fine, BUT airbag warning light now showing. ECU has been sent back to check and come back with a clean bill of health. The garage has had it on a vag com reader and its telling them that the reader can't communicate with airbag system. All the obvous like under seat wiring has been checked - so wondered if I could call on the knowledgeable Briskoda community to se what we could/should check and do next? Its an 08 1.9 auto, but with only 20k miles. A factor is that it has stood for 4 years, but the airbag never showed previosly while I was fettleing the car to get it back on the road. Any help or suggestions would be very gratfuly recived
  18. You're absolutely right with your observation in that it drives perfectly; but need the SWL out for the MOT test.
  19. Apologising for my ignorance , but what does SWL stand for?
  20. Update, in still stuck in limbo with this fault. In a step by step review: The mouse issue was a red herring, in that there was mouse material, but no damage caused. The ECU was sent away, and first returned as 'no fault' Fair play to the garage, in that they used a temporary donor ECU and found that this took the PRNDS problem away ECU sent away to another workshop, and returned ECU fitted - PRNDS issue gone and car drives perfectly BUT - at this point the seatbelt warning light came on, and when hooked up to code reader, it suggested that it wouldn't connect to the seatbelt circuit so couldn't be removed. ECU returned for a third time, and MIGHT come back fine, but wondered if anyone had thoughts on how to sort out final seatbelt issue (unfortunately haven't got codes) Thanks for your interest
  21. Intermediate update in that the code readings identified that the ECU wasn't speaking to to modules that it should. The garage has taken the battery tray out to get to the ECU ................. and found a mouse nest, with evidence of chewed wires. Background is that the car has stood for 4 years. Not sure on the next steps, but an unusual case to resolve!
  22. They're due to run the checks on Friday and we'll see where to go from there. They seem very competent, but wondered if there's anything specific that I should ask them to check? Is the power train canbus easy to get at?
