I'm not familiar with the vehicle but that does look like a huge amount of work. Have you already removed the outer sill in that second pic? The sills are unlikely to be the limit of it. Is the car a treasure?

There doesn't seem to be anyone coming back to these oil pump noise threads to say that the noise has gotten much worse or that other issues have arisen, which I guess should be a comfort. I think the original TPI is almost 9yo now.

Seems you can only search two ways, either by VIN or through a series of drop down boxes (as already described; there are hundreds and hundreds of "sales types"). You can't search generally, only against a very specific vehicle type and it won't show you TPIs that aren't applicable to that vehicle. I've only used it a handful of times to be fair, there could be other ways of using it. Thanks for the help, I'll have a think about next steps. I'm getting emails as replies are made to this thread so will keep tabs on it and update if I ever resolve it. Cheers!

A week later.. answering this myself: I've found this on VW erwin, it's the same reference number, I needed to be logged in as an affected vehicle though, so used a 2016 1.4 Golf I think. The sound file sounds the same as others available in this thread.

I'm not going to be spraying the belt but might mention it to the dealer. Did it relate to a specific size or age of engine Blue8793841? I might just be looking at the wrong cars - you need to search against a very specific model to bring up access to any tpis and then they only relate to that very specific model; the search criteria requires year, sales type (which dictates the market/model/trim/engine and output), engine code, gearbox code. The noise I'm referring to is pretty distinct, appears at seconds 3-4 in both videos. I've access until early afternoon and will have another go before then.

Thanks to both of you. It sure is a noisy engine! I should admit that I'm not going to be spraying anything anywhere unless in complete confidence. I've already had the aux belt off to discount the ancillaries. I've also kicked-off with erwin this afternoon and have spent a good while so far, nothing doing though. I've found mention of this special lubricant but only in relation to its use for the sunroof. Loads of interesting snippets about other things but no eureka moment with this noise sadly.

It's an odd sound, like a metal vibration, I've wondered about lots of possibilities although feel we're in the right area at the bottom of the engine. It's less prominent when the weather's hot, so not a great time to be diagnosing, in the summer. Blue8793841, have you first-hand experience of this noise or are you commenting from a more general experience? I think I'm going to pay for 24hrs of erwin so as I can have a really good look without having to worry about running out of time, probably tomorrow.

Yeah, i removed the top cover to check all of the variator cap screws and position of the tensioner at tdc; there wasn't much dust/debris but i noted it, thinking it was probably normal, sounds as though it is. Yellow dust and small number of bigger albeit tiny fragments, belt looked ok to me. Can you help further in trying to track down the tpi? I can pay for an hour on erwin but it's easily lost if you don't know where to look, i'm new to it and have noticed there are very few tpis against my car, i've had to search under other cars to find stuff about the variator screws for example. Very grateful for your help

This sounds like it, thanks so much for posting, 2 years I've been looking into this! Might you be able to share the tpi number please? Even by PM would be great, very interested to take a look. I did notice a small amount of dust and fibrous debris in the belt housing when i checked, not normal? It's a dayco belt.

Has anyone any ideas? Any techs on here? Does anyone else have this noise in their 1.0 TSI?

Hello Ootohere and thanks for the kind welcome. Thanks also for the bump to the other thread which I've noticed (it happens I'm already aware of the prob with the variator cap bolts - cheers though). I've had the car from new, the noise started after approx 3 months, car has now done 23k and is 2.5y old, has been serviced as it should by VW - there is nothing suspicious in its history. I've a thread on the upowners club in which several others with up GTIs report having the same noise, but no diagnosis. The chap with the fabia in the video above has the clearest video I've found of this noise, it clearly affects more than one make/model. Mine was looked at by my dealer multiple times last summer (it's taken me this long to recover!) - they replaced the OPF heat shield, the turbo actuator rod and checked the aforementioned camshaft variator bolts - none any use; now I'm basically searching for info to strengthen my case before I return to them. I've spent a chunk of time trying to trace it myself and feel it's loudest in the area of the crank pulley - I've had the aux belt off to discount the a/c pump, alternator and tensioner, and have checked the variator bolts again, the cambelt and the position of its tensioner. The 1.4 TSI oil pump noise is different but is in the same area as this one, so is what I'm thinking about at the moment. Or some other internal malady. Hoping someone can shed some light!

Hello, new member searching for some insight into a cold start noise affecting 1.0 TSI engines. I actually have a VW up but have found another video of the same noise in a Fabia, hence my asking here. Here's my video: and here's the video from the chap with the Fabia: I've spent quite some time trying to trace this and feel it's best-heard in the region of the crank pulley; I'm aware of a couple of threads on here about oil pump noises from the 1.4 TSI and wonder if this could be similar? Does anyone have any info about this noise?
