  1. RE carwash

Im onto my second black octy vrs and wash it at least twice a week .

I also applied supagard much to the amusement of my new neighbours as i was at it for about 5 hrs doing prep including putting masking tape on all the window rubbers.

I do enjoy washing it and it would drive me spare if i couldnt get it done.

    Regards Whoosh:thumbup:

Bloody hell! I feel like a right anal so an so when my neighbours see me washing mine 2- 3 times a month. I too get a great sense of satisfaction through cleaning the car. It may be uncool in the eyes of Jeremy Clarkson, money don't come that easy for me though.

A bloke who lives down the street from me always takes the **** out of me. " let it go " he keeps saying. I feel like giving him a right cross.

  2. How often do you wash your motor? Once, Twice, Three times a month, or every week.

I have just had an operation on my ankle so I can't fanny around with it at weekends.

It is now filthy, Minging and really bugging me and I will have to take it to the local hand car wash and let fifty million Poles swarm all over it for seven quid.

I have taken it through before and noticed a couple of scratches from those sqeegee things they use to get rid of the water before leathering. Mines the Race blue species.

Is Metallic T cut the best thing to get rid?

  3. I have just replaced my Conti sport contact 2's after 17,300 K and they weren't quite down to the wear indicators. Wouldn't consider myself a slow driver either. Then again I don't drive round like a loony. What's the most you have eked out of your tyres?

I drive a VRS Octavia II, petrol.

On another slightly different tack, excuse the pun. I have also had to replace the drivers side rear after a Rawlbolt casing wrecked the tyre. My local tyre bloke did not have any Conti 2's left so I went with the new Conti Sport Contact 3. I have noticed that it does not seem to have the same road contact profile as the 2's ie not as much rubber on the tarmac, the edges seem to have greater radiuses, small point, but it bugs me cause i'm an anorak. Maybe the pressure is to high. Anyone else noticed this?

  4.

The latter pics were taken on my Canon IXUS 700, the pink ones on my K850i - I've checked and double checked the settings, but it just won't take a decent photo :( Theres dust under the lens cover as well which is impossible to get out as its a sealed unit :(

Mate, the reason for the 'dusty' appearance on the pics is because you have taken the first set into the sun, never a good idea. Always try to make sure the sun is behind you.

Not that I am any David Bailey

  5. I have just had a quote for the damage by a guy I know to be VERY good at PDR stuff. He has just started up on his own doing the paintless dent repair outside his day job at a bodyshop.

He has also given me a bloody good price for some re painting and repair work on my rear bumper. He did some paint work on my last Octavia and it was very good.

I took the side out of my Octavia as I drove it of the forecourt, brand new last year. It was repaired by a VAG shop, but i was never entirely happy with the job, the finish was too glassy. Why do they over polish?

  6. I thought you were going to ask "how much for a new wife?" ;)

Tough luck, damn wind is so strong! Hope you get it fixed cheap...

Thing is they complain and reckon you are getting precious when stuff like this happens.

Nowt really I suppose but the damage is just bad enough to p!ss me off. I can't leave it.

Yet it is too little to put through insurance.

I think I will go smash her hair dryer up

  7. best to phone your dealer and ask. It'll need painting too won't it?

Yes, it will. Mines like yours a race blue VRS. I had a price to repair a few other bits of collateral damage, which includes a dented rear bumper. Dent in the bonnet, where a tin fell of a shelf in the garage and a minor dent in the passenger door. £250 which I thought was pretty good. This will bump it up to about 350 I reckon.

    I'll ring Benfield in Harrogate

  8. I have a O6 plate VRS mK II. When starting it on some mornings the engine, or starter motor emits an alarming clatter for a split second. Not too fussed as it has always done it. But What is it?

I have also noticed a creaking from the front end which sounds like the bushes are going on the anti roll bars. Why cant VW sort this out? It happened to my mark I VRS at about the same stage, 18-20K.

Apart from that still love the car, but I wish I had bought a red one. Mines blue.

  9. Loads of people seem to be having problems with the Stream unit.

Sorry to **** you off folks, but mine is fine, reception and all. This leads me to think that it maybe a batch that have been incorrectly manufactured, or installed wrongly.

I have an 06 plate VRS the Radio is the bog standard one without the MP3 facility.

  10. MMMM! Same thing happened to me. I removed the tailgate lining to remove a dent in the side of the numberplate recess. For starters I made a pigs ear of trying to push the dent out. I made it worse and split the paint. I'ts only a small dent but it ****ed me off.

Putting the lining back is not as straight forward as it seems. You have to put the top in first, making sure to align the sides to slot into the joints. You will know what I mean. The clips are a bloody nightmare if they are not lined up perfectly. They will bend, pop out and then you lose the things on the floor.

Take care and dont try to rush it. Thats my advice. Better still take it to a dent repairer and let him do the thing. £80 well spent

  11. Blimey - Im amazed so many of you are critisizing the Octy II audio setup. Within weeks if buying my MK1 4x4, I came to realsie that the audio was easily the weakest aspect of the car so I wasnt expecting much on the MK2 VRS testdrives in respect of the standard audio. I was very impressed tbh. There was a decent CD along for the test drive and I thought the audio performance was spot on - good treble, midrange and even more surprisingly; bass.

Unless this 2007 build VRS had an upgrade of some sort (Im sure the h/u said Stream MP3 though) I'd say at low to medium levels it was fairly comparable to my 4x4 which now has Apine DDDrive components, AVCR head unit and amp!!

I have just read the thread on audio quaity in the MKII vrs Octy. I'm with Mr Ztec on this one. I have a standard STREAM unit in mine, and I am pretty impressed with it. I have the bass turned up pretty high with quite a lot of Treble. Midrange about half.

The sound is warm and punchy. Infact I was playing my Doobie Brothers CD t'other day and I preferrred it to my House system ( NAD amp and Cambridge CD with Dac )

A freind of mine was in my car in the other day, his car is a new 5 Series, he was staggered by the sound from the stream unit. Even at high volumes the bass was tight without hardly ANY distortion. Infact I looked at the wing mirrors, whilst driving and they where visibly shaking. My idea of a crap car stereo was the one fitted in my MK I VRS. Now that WAS crap.

  12. I don't fancy a trailer as they have their limitations with the speed you can travel at tbh, and would be a nuiscance trundling around the Lake District and Yorkshire, plus I would need quite a large one to accomodate to Mountain bikes. Wre yours the revision one type?

    thanks

I dont know. But I do know that you can get a great top for the trailer for 200 quid, this increases the vol of the trailer and you can get a bike rack to fit on top.

  13. They did more than scratch the paint on mine. I came back from Cornwall last year after carrying a Thule top box, and on removing the bars i found that the rubber foot area had actually dented the roof under compression. I tightened them to the correct torque with the tool supplied as well. I also filled it with very light stuff, so weight was not an issue. I took it back to Pulleyn's in York and got the dents taken out for nowt. I still have a very expensive Skoda roof rack that I will NEVER use again.

I went to Harrogate Trailers and bought a little Trelgo trailer and fitted a Westfalia tow bar. No cutting of the rear bumper either. It's a nice swan neck which I can unbolt.

Much better option if you ask me. Make sure you get 10 inch wheels on yer trailer though

  14. I have had both incarnations of the Octavia VRS and both suffer from the same problem, namely seat fraying on the material inserts. I cured the problem on the mark one by dropping a tiny amount of superglue to the fraying weave where the silver mesh is stitched to the leather on the front edge. Sounds silly but believe me it really worked and prevented further fraying. I saw some horredous cases on the old ones.

I found to my horror that my new octy has the same bloody disease. Not so much a fraying, but a furring up of the black mesh. I think the virus has mutated for the new model. So wha can be done? Well I would suggest avoiding wearing outdoor type trousers or shorts with Velcro fastenings on the back pockets, as this was the initial cause of wear on mine. I am really carefull about getting into he damned thing now incase I damage the seats, pathetic eh!

I wondered what could be done to arrest the problem, so I bought some teflon spray and coated the whole seat. Manufacturers spray kids school trousers with this stuff to make them easier to clean, but I am sure I read somewhere that it made the material a bit more resilient to scuffing etc. Anyway one thing I have noticed is that the Alcantara suedy bits have remained pretty clean. I was a bit worried at first because when you spray the stuff on the grey stays darker for a few days.

So go ahead spray away. If you dare!

  15. I am the proud owner of an 06 race blue Octy VRS. I bought it last year from Pulleyns in York. I believe they are now Martin Beevers.

I have a tale to tell. The morning arrived, I took my little lad (4) to pick up my shiny new steed. I waved goodbye to my old black VRS, which I traded in. I then walked in to the showroom with Harry, he was giddy as a kipper at the thought of having a new car.

We sat down to finalise the details, insurance etc. The salesman took us out to the car, parked on the forecourt, looking pristine. I sat Harry in his car seat in the front, and turned the ignition. It was at this point that I noticed it had no fuel in, so I pointed this out to the salesman. He said OK take it to the pump and I will fill it up for you. I closed the door put it into gear, let my foot of the clutch and took the side out of it against a bloody great white bollard.

What a *******. Insured for fully 10 mins. New drivers side door, new sill, new wing. Harry was in tears, and I was very close. Pulleyn's took the car into their bodyshop in Haxby. I was not happy with the first attempt, so I showed it to a guy who works for the Audi body shop in Newcastle. He pointed out a few flaws. The second attempt was much better. I can still tell it has been done because the paint finish has a glassier finish than the factory paint.

Still, its a great car and I still enjoy driving it and Harry's tears have long since dried.
