  1. So it looks as if everything is OK with my a/c - thanks for all comments.

Like eccleshill, I find the fan speed always tends to go too fast (and is noisy) - I am quite prepared to put up with a bit of poor temperature control for the sake of peace and quiet.

I much prefer the semi automatic a/c on the basic model (I didnt spec the cc - I got I because the only car available had a function pack fitted) - I dont think a lot of thought has gone into the CC - it could so much more user friendly and flexible (for the sake of a bit of decent software) At least on my old Alhambra, speed 1 is always slow (and not rampable) - in the Fabia its "Computer knows best - stand aside human!"

I also find the rotary controls on the Fabia CC are ridiculously over sensitive. You need a surgeons touch to make a one notch change on speed or temperature. Rather daft.

  2. If I were you I would inform your ins co. I was surprised at what I had to declare (and have put on my schedule) e.g. Factory fit optional parking sensors. I was told it had to go on.

Read your policy and it will have clause that says something like "If you make any alterations........you must tell us......"

In the event of an accident, any undeclared alterations spotted by the assesor would probably cancel your cover.

  3. Yes I know how CC works - I have it in my Alhambra. BUT - if I press econ in that, it stays in econ - AUTO doesnt light up by itself and you cant have AUTO and econ lit together.

In the Fabia, AUTO and econ light together on selected (and automatically ramped) settings. i.e speed 1 econ - speed 2 econ and AUTO -speed 3 econ - etc

I cannot stop the fan from ramping up the lcd settings incessantly in econ (In the alhambra the fan speed MAY ramp but the settings dont).

    Pressing AUTO everything is fine.

Looks like a firmware issue to me.

    Complicated to explain

  4. Press econ and lcd says econ.

Alter fan speed, on some settings lcd says AUTO and econ, other settings just econ.

Also fan speed alters - a lot - I understand this - but in econ it ramps up the settings on the LCD as well. (and AUTO comes on along with econ) Keep turning it down, keeps ramping up.

    Battle of man v computer.

Dealer says normal........they all do that.

I say its wierd and can I have manual a/c in my next car please.

BTW its a brand new car.

  5. Inpection to BS requirements are now part of the MOT test

The British Standard also requires that a number plate must be marked with the following information: -

The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)

The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)

The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The 'supplying outlet' is taken to mean acompany whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)

A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters are optional additions.

There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.

  6. How did the insurance react to this mod? Would have thought they might have been upset you altered the bumper area so radically.

Also the number plate doesnt appear to be BS compliant and can it be offset and at an angle like on the pic?

  7. Fabia 2 1.2HTP 70bhp

Only done 500 miles and trip computer (reasonably accurate according to checks) shows 39 mpg average. Driving like a nun.

Mk 1 Fabia 1.2 64bhp had similar average mpg at low mileage but when loosened up was capable of 55-60mpg when driven very gently on B roads (50mph) - dipping to 38-40mpg around town.

Problem with 1.2 engine is its very smooth, loves to be revved and is very lively if you want it to be. You can pay for reckless use of that with consumption of 35mpg or less.

  8. Unfortunately I have to agree with james riley! Recently taken delivery of Fabia 2 with function pack having put up with a terrible Corsa 1.3ctdi (57 reg) for 2 years and a fantastic Mk1 Fabia before that (my son has that now).

I am very disappointed with the Mk2 Fabia. It is totally underwhelming and I regret not trying other cars now.:rotz:

    Main gripes

Road noise - lots - could be the Bridgstone Turanzas but somehow I think not.

Bouncier ride - what happened to the superb ride of the Mk1?

Internally the design is a mess - I dont know who the design is supposed to be aimed at, but it clearly doesnt appeal to my kids or myself

    Radio - its just carp

The quality is there in the build, but the design quality is all about penny pinching.

No, the design doesnt grow on you - thinks I will be getting rid or giving it away next year.

Sorry Skoda, the sooner you bin the current Fabia, the better!

  9. As I pointed out 6 weeks or more ago, the CO2 figures have been revised (they have been on the VCA website for some time) Notably the 1.4Tsi Manual is 148g/km instead of 154g/km making it virtually the same as the DSG version. Also some 1.9 PD (105bhp) models have increased to 135g/km.:rotz:

  10. By virtue of the fact that ECUs can be "read", all remaps/modifications to software are detectable, there is no way around that simple fact.

Ask him to put his claims in writing and whether he is willing to underwrite (in writing) you in the event of an insurance incident involving the remap and see what he says then!

  11. We all know that new Octavia 1.4Tsi variants are already on long delivery (20+ weeks) and there is a fax in circulation around Skoda dealers restricting new orders to 5 per week (don't know if that is per dealer or for entire UK), but I just read a post on HJ who said he had been told that the 1.4Tsi had been discontinued and is no longer available on the Octavia.

Can anyone confirm? Maybe this information is unreliable - could just be a dealer refering to the shortage, or indeed it may the basic 1.4 80bhp that is being discontinued (hello 1.2Tsi?).

Guess we'll find out something when the July pricelist comes out. (and something about the 1.6 CR diesel)

  12. I'm sure if you shop around some other dealers (by phone of course), you'll be offered a much better deal on repairs. My local dealer service manager said they would try to price match anyone local. The benefit to me is they use genuine Skoda parts and repairs/work are guaranteed for 2 years. I had brake pads/discs/ fluid change and an MOT for £230 which I thought reasonable, considering my car had done 75,000 miles in 5 years on the originals. Brakes, clutches, cambelts are all items that you can expect to change at around 5 year intervals on most cars (maybe if you are gentle you could get somewhat longer)

I understand how you feel, however cambelt/water pump (not sure if you really need a new water pump) is a once every 4/5 year expense and clutch is (for you) a once every 80,000 mile expense. You need to have these items done anyway to optimise the value of your car if you want to sell.

  13. I dont know what this obsession is with fitting giant cartwheels - especially on luxury cars. My priorities are excellent ride / low noise / safety. The other day I saw an L200 pickup with the most ridiculous oversize alloys and skinniest tyres I've ever seen. Must say I had a good laugh at how ridiculous it looked. In most cases of super low profile tyres I look at, they invariably have large scrapes and damage on the alloy rims as the tyres dont offer any protection.

On another thread about the FL Octavia VRS, pictures prompted posters to say "those wheels are only 17"" when in fact they were 18". Most people cant tell the difference from a distance.

And of course the larger low profile tyres cost an arm and a leg.

  14. Further update - no reply from dealer regarding PDI despite 3 phone calls.

I've noticed that the engine seems to be tilted quite sharply accross the engine bay - about 10 to 15 degrees. As the dipstick is at one end, this obviously makes a big differeffence in reading.

Is this tilt normal?- the offside engine mount looks extremely large and tall.

  15. As far as the 1.4tsi (and the yet to be released 1.2tsi), the key innovations are:- latest generation petrol direct injection technology, water cooled intercooler which allows an extremely low volume turbo to inlet path and variable (inlet) valve timing all of which allows for constant torque from 1500rpm - 4500rpm.

I'll be interested if any of these innovations have found their way into the new 1.6 CR engine.

  16. Thanks for the replies

What do I look for to check if "suspension transport blocks" have been removed? Where are these blocks fitted?

Is "oil level warning" a standard feature? (the operators manual has an * against it?)

I would have thought that the factory would fill with a machine measured amount, so the next question - is there anyway the dipstick could be that inaccurate - I'm thinking the plastic collar on the end of the tube seems quite long....

Main concern for the 1.2 engine is even a momentary loss of oil pressure can lead to camchain tensioner releasing chain. (Used to be a common failure)

  17. Picked a brand new Fabia 2 - 1.2L 70bhp on Wednesday - 9 miles on the clock. During handover, usual questions - "Have fluids been checked?" - Yes sir, definitely. So accept the car - drive home 40 miles - stick to own running in rules (under 55mph - 3000 rpm max) - everthing fine.

Sat morning, now 150 miles on the clock, on a whim decide to check the engine oil level (cold before first start) .

WHAT? ENGINE OIL BELOW MINIMUM MARK! - actually on the bottom bend situated about 5mm below the hatched area (the area the oil should be in) Several careful rechecks later, i.e. level ground, engine cold then warm, stood few a minutes etc. - the same result.

Phonecall to dealer - cant help until Monday as service dept closed but said the PDI should have checked it and cant understand whats happened. In the end I added about 0.7 litres just to get it to the halfway mark.

No evidence of leaks or oil being burned - engine is running sweet etc

Has anyone ever experienced an underfilled engine straight from the factory? I doubt that over 1 litre in less than 150 miles could be burnt off without seeing something.

And should I be worried about gearbox levels etc.?
