  1. Wow, they do have some spec on them! I can't help but be a bit of a BMW fan-boi though, I'm afraid. Plus the 19 miles is a bit of a pain with a 22-24 mile commute. (I know the 330e is only 25, at best, but still.) And I much prefer the styling of the 3 series, both inside and out.

They're defo food for thought though, so thanks.

    FWIW, the 330e is 6.1 0-60 and 252bhp with 310lb/ft.

Regards pursuing it - I'd be interested to from a curiosity point of view, but, frankly, I don't have the energy or motivation to do so. I've had enough problems with my E30 (currently pending an engine rebuild) that I've no inclination to spend more time messing around with cars (even if it is from the warmth of a keyboard, and not fighting engine cranes!).

  2. I have asked over there already - you guys have been the most helpful of anywhere so far :)

I think I'm going to pull the plug (given they've said I could) and go for the 330e PHEV. Better performance, enough battery range to do most of my driving (or very, very close to enough), and about £100 a month cheaper! I would have prefered a Golf GTE to the i3, but they're about £450 a month to lease! :o

  3. Appreciate the reply - responded inline

    You have a contract.

    £70 a month is a huge amount.

Tell them to honor the original price or give you the deposit back.

I've not paid anything yet (thankfully)

They can't change the terms of the contract on you without giving you the option to back out.

The option to back out was offered. I guess they've effectively said 'you can back out, or, if you like, we have this alternative option that matches most of your requirements'

Any clause that says they can is IMHO an unfair contract clause.

They wouldn't be happy with a clause that says you can decide to pay less for a few months if you're having a bad month.

    Agreed

I would as above point out they can keep the car and you want all your money back.

It's not an additional manufacturer charge, it's them changing the price totally.

What was my thoughts, but ever only having had a phone contract before, I'm not that clued up on terminology etc., (as should be apparent!)

There is no way on earth that would stand up in court and if it was myself in your position, I'd be seriously considering court action.

What they're trying to pull off is a joke.

Did you go through BMW finance or another finance company?

It's through FleetDrive, with whom BMW initiated contact.

Make sure you use your rights under the consumer credit act too.

The credit contract isn't valid any more as they've increased the amount to be borrowed without your agreement, so you can get out of it.

Get onto the finance company and tell them you have not agreed to an increase in the loan amount and have it noted on record ASAP.

I've just spoken to CAB, and they also think that I've got a strong case, and are going to pass details of this along to the advertising standards board etc.

I'll follow up with it later/tomorrow, but my concern is delaying this too long and ending up with nothing as I've missed the 18th Dec. cut off point (unless the consensus is that the price would be honored if I were victorious?)

  4. I did yesterday, and they're not updated yet, but they were a few weeks behind when they released a new raft of colour options. Plus the price doesn't actually increase until the 18th Dec., so I doubt they'll update their headline figures until they have to...

  5. I've tried that, they don't seem to be budging.

However, I want one of these cars, and as this funding will stop on all new leases, if I go elsewhere, it'll still be at the increased price, and I'll have to wait again. There's nothing in the conventional fuel price band that meets my wants, so they have me over a barrel (in so much as I'm confining myself to buying their car).

At least the alternative car is £17 a month cheaper, so it is a bit of a saving. (And I guess a parking camera/self parking is more useful than leather seats/dashboard, although this is self justification here...)

  6. I've spoken to them this morning, and it looks like it's this clause on the initial quote which I missed that's the problem:

    Untitled.png

    "Additional manufacturer charges may apply".

I guess that's game over for honoring the original price, and it's time to accept the new, lower priced, differently spec'd car.

On the bright side, my 330d, bless it, failed to start twice yesterday when out and about with friends, so the sooner something reliable is here, the better.

  7. I will keep this updated, don't worry. :)

Principle says I'd love to cancel and get something else, but, having spent ages going over this, there's nothing else that really fits the bill once you add the lease + fuel costs together (I can charge the i3 at work FOC, so it has 0 running costs...)

I'd forgotten trading standards, thanks. (I was thinking CAB, but I guess TS would be better for this.)

  8. There must be a section on them / you terminating the contract. What does it say? :)

There's nothing that I can see on their part about cancelling.

    8.Ending this agreement early

In the event of any default referred to in Clause 9 below, you will be considered to have repudiated this agreement. This means we may accept your repudiation and end this agreement after sending you any notice required by law and if (if the default can be remedied) you do not remedy the default by the date which we will notify to you. If we end this agreement, you must return the Vehicle to us in accordance with Clause 10 and pay the sums due in paragraph (e) under Default Charges in "Key Information".

    ...

Cancellation: This agreement is not cancellable

    Clause 9 = defaults

Clause 10 = return condition of the car.

    Here's the whole PDF: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zt9py4ufwsocifa/Example%20T%26C%27s%20alphabet%20Personal%20Contract%20Hire.pdf?dl=0

  9. Nothing that I can see reading through it about cancelling prior to supply.

This seems to suggest that it's a fixed price too...

How much will you have to pay?
The advance rentals, rentals, hire arrangement fee and other charges are shown in the Pre-contract Information and in your Contract Hire agreement.

Excess mileage charges will be payable if you have exceeded your maximum contract mileage at the end of the agreement. Before signing the agreement you should therefore carefully consider the number of miles you expect to drive during your agreement and ensure the maximum contract mileage stated in the Pre- contract Information and your Contract Hire agreement sufficiently covers your predicted mileage.

You may have to pay additional charges if you break the agreement and you must also pay any speeding fines, parking charges and other fees and charges that become payable in relation to the use of the vehicle during the agreement.
  10. That was my understanding too - their issue, not mine. (Although of course, it is now my issue.)

Sounds like someone in that tangled Web got their sums wrong, and the easy option is for you to pay more...

I went to see the dealer yesterday (and their stock car, which is nice, but the basic interior just isn't anywhere near as appealing, although if it's that or nothing, I'll take it...). They're saying that Alphabet are dropping funding for the i3 delivered after 31st Dec. '15, and this is why the price is going up. Not that I can see anything that mentions that as a clause anywhere, or why it should be my problem...

  11. The plot thickens...

I spoke to Alphabet, and they say that this is something that they're unlikely to do unless the RRP of the car changes, which it hasn't...

(I ordered through BMW, who outsourced to FleetDrive, who get their cars from Alphabet...)

  12. That's a good point Chris... (I've also started getting PPI calls, which I never had until this credit check :( ).

    Good luck.
For what it's worth, my sister has an i3 (with leather interior), I was in it at the weekend and it's awesome - good choice !

Cheers - I'm impressed, obviously! I ordered one with the leather interior. They've got a stock car for £13p/m less, but without the leather interior, but with self parking instead (I think I forgot to readd that after my first post was truncated). I'd rather pay the original price, at £13p/m more, and have leather.

Part of me wonders if this is a 'ploy' to try and get their stock car shifted...

  13. Thanks.

It's not a VW derv (far from it - it's an i3). I'll swing by the dealer later and ask, as, due to a weird BMW-leasing-options-suck situation, they're outsourcing their leasing to FleetDrive (who outsource to Alphabet, owned by BMW -_- ). so hopefully will be up front about it all.

I'll look at doing further/legal searching later on once I've had a chat, and once I'm not at work :)

Either way, it's pretty rubbish behaviour from the underwriters/funders...

  14. Hi all,

Bit of an odd one, and I was wondering if anyone here had any views at all.

I've recently signed up on a PCH for a new car, due to be delivered 14th January.

I had a phone call earlier today from the supplying dealer saying that the underwriter has cut/reduced funding for this car model for vehicles delivered after 31st Dec. 2015, and that my monthly payments would increase by £70p/m, should I stick with it. Or, they've got this stock car for £13p/m less, but without a leather interior/dash.

Now, my thoughts are, I've signed the contracted and posted it back, and I'm outside of my 14 day cooling off period, so I see it that we're both locked into this contract at the agreed price, even if the car isn't here yet. (Correct?)

In the contract, the only statements relating to price increases are these:

    (h) We may change the amount of our administration fees payable under this agreement. We will notify you in writing before we make a change.

    (i) If any change to the rate of Corporation Tax or capital allowances results in a reduction of our after tax rate of return from this agreement, we may adjust the Rentals in order to preserve our rate of return. If we do so, we will give you reasonable notice of any adjustment we make. The adjusted amount will be payable from the date stated in the notice.

Edit - it chopped half my post off... :(

I don't think that the capital allowances are changing, (and they'd have advance knowledge if so...), so are they able to increase the price like this?

I'd have thought that the fact I'm outside of the cooling off period, and that the contracts are signed/returned means that we're locked in?

    Cheers,
    Joe
  15. I've put in for a REx model :)

Just waiting for the credit checks to go through. Bit of a gamble, but given the petrol backup, going flat shouldn't be a problem.

I went for the standard spec (sat nav, Bluetooth, heated seats, cruise control, DAB, auto lights/wipers - all the normal standard stuff of a modern car etc.) + the 'suite interior' (ambient lighting, exterior extended lighting + leather seats/dash and wooden dash inlays), LED headights, DC rapid charging (30 minutes to 80% charge - only 89pence a month more, so even if I only use it once a year, it's no big loss), metallic black paint (to hide the awful two tone thing) and HK audio. The standard radio was fairly good considering, but for the last 3+ years I've hated the crappy radio in the 330d, even with an aftermarket amp and speakers, so I thought I'd splash out for the upgraded option, rather than kicking myself for the duration of the lease!

It worked out £399 a month with 3 months down for 15k a year. I can charge it for free at work. Serving every two years, which is basically an oil change on the engine, and new brake fluid.

It seems like quite a lot a month for the size of car, but if you consider I'd spend £180-£240 a month on fuel (let's say £180 on average to be fair), then subtract the running costs of a ICE from the lease costs, and it puts me into a ~£220 a month budget for leasing an ICE. At that money, you're looking at mid spec/power Astras, Golfs, Focus, Octavia, Leon/high end A1s, Polos, Fiestas etc. IMO, the i3 is a much nicer place to be than all of those, even if it is a bit fugly.

I very nearly signed up for Leon FR, before seeing a Golf GTD is better value, and nicer inside (higher standard spec makes value better), but a Golf GTD + fuel is more than the i3 per month. Not to mention slower, and louder/less refined inside. And likely lying about it's emissions, or due to destroy its camshaft, or <insert other recent VW disaster/QA failure here>

Once it arrives, I'll do a thread somewhere to document if it's a disaster or not!

  16. Oh, the other thing to add here was the dealership experience - very impressive.

I've had recent dealings with Peugeot, SEAT and VW as a potential customer. Peugeot were quite good, but wanted to talk figures before they'd let me take the car out, but when it transpired they couldn't match the deal I'd found, they said no, as they wanted to keep their demo low mileage (I do get this), and instead offered me a drive in something else so I could get a feel for the newer, smaller engines (having made my desire for something big engined known).

SEAT were much the same - numbers first, then a test drive. (In a Leon FR 2.0 184 - a nice enough car, but a bit 'meh'. The door cards felt really poor quality - my E30 has miles better door cards!) VW didn't even let me walk into the dealership without accosting me, which would be fair enough, if they weren't incredibly stuck up and seemingly unwilling to help/entertain my idea of buying their car at all. In the end, I went to see a friend with Golf GTD and had a go in that instead. (A much nicer car inside then a Leon IMO, if bland as anything outside.)

Anyway, BMW. I submitted a request for a test drive (sorry, driving experience) online, and got a phone call a day or two later from the dealer. They said it would be a case of showing me the car, explaining its features/a Q&A session, and then a test drive. Afterwards, if I wanted, we could talk numbers. Anyway, I went for a drive, got back, had to ask to talk numbers. They straight out said BMW can't match online prices, but they've got another way of offering leases via a third party. They got me some figures, which weren't as good as my online ones, and then offered me the car for an extended test drive - letting me have it from first thing Monday AM until closing time on Wednesday PM. (Despite knowing they weren't competitive!)

A very good service - I was impressed. Not sure that they'd be as helpful on their regular range, I think they're trying to push the 'i' range, so see this as advertising as much as anything. Worked in my favour though, so

  17. Makes perfect sense for you then.

If my second car wasn't so rust prone, and I could charge at home (for free, via solar) then I'd be all over the BEV instead of the REx.

  18. I had one of these on demo a while back.

I still cant get over how fast it was! Mine had no range extender generator so a good bit lighter!

With the options I wanted I was more than £10k more expensive than a top spec Nissan Leaf. Typical BMW pricing...

I also came to the opinion that the Rex is pretty pointless. What's your thoughts on it?

Tis a lot more £££ than a Leaf, but the engineering etc. can't come cheaply. That carbon fibre chassis which only weighs 80kg most cost a bit. They're not cheap though...

My thoughts on the REx? A must have, so the complete opposite to you! :) Why? With it, I can keep filling it with fuel, and still do long trips around the country without worrying or seeking out charge points. Sure, the 90mile range will need a fuel stop every hour or so, but it's not that often I do longer distances. Plus, if I can't get it charged up at work one day after having already driven home, and back into work, it means I've got the safety to know I can get home again on petrol without having to panic. For the rest of the time, it makes it slower, and less efficient, but I think that's a trade off for the piece of mind/flexibility it offers. For the three days I had mine, I was thrashing it around without concern for range, safe in the knowledge the petrol engine had my back.

And, without the REx, I'd have enough range to drive to/from work, and then I'd have to plug in ready for the next day - no option of going to see friends/to the pub or whatever...

Yeah, I know I've got the E30, so don't need the i3 to do longer trips, but despite having cruise control, the E30's still not the best long distance cruiser (bit loud, and expensive), and I don't really plan to use it in the winter/rain.

  19. I drove it the other way - Russia -> Finland -> Sweden -> Norway -> Denmark -> France etc. -> home.

Can't offer route guidance, but Norway is a truly stunning country with an amazing landscape and lovely people.

We did the bridge rather than two ferries. An expensive crossing, but much easier.

  20. This is an interesting watch too. Guessing this is the same as the new Fabia vRS? Or did they not do a mk3?

And this, while clearly wheel spinning is still impressive.

I can only imagine a Tesla must be truely amazing!
