  1. So a couple of weeks ago I clocked the 10,000 milestone after a little more than 14 months of ownership, since then I've been in two minds whether to write a review or not and tonight I thought what the hell.

So lets start with the good points. I love the engine and gearbox/dsg combination, after coming from 9 years with a mk1 vrs it took a few weeks to really get the feel for what's what but dame its good when you sync with it, it's is a real lady on the street and a freak in the bed so to speak, in one breath I can take wifey out for a meal and drive in 'D' mode smooth as silk and in the next whilst on my own and fired in manual mode its freakishly good. I've had the odd dsg brain fart but nothing I considered to be a fault however I do have clutch slip between gears on light throttle especially when cold that is slowly developing, however it is sharp and positive with heavy throttle so another call to the dealer this coming week is in order. I like the cabin when compared to a mk1, I spec'd nav, climate, phone, dab and leather pack with phone prep which the last turned out to be a con in reality but you live and learn. The nav unit works really well and combined with the climate gives a better aesthetic to the dash as a whole imo. The only real negative I have on the cabin is the drivers seat sits a tad too high even on its lowest setting, giving the feeling of sitting on rather than sitting in the car, the mk1 fitted my 6ft+ frame I little better and gave me the sitting in feeling which I like.

Now for those who may read this that are looking into the potential of buying a mk2 vrs, please don't let this put you off, they are great cars as a whole, take into account performance vs running cost and you will need to look high and low to find anything else that comes remotely close for bang for ya buck.

So the not so good bits and my gripes with the vrs, I really have been disappointed with the standard chassis and brake set up, the engine performance far exceeds the chassis handling capacity, I didn't expect Renault cup pack type handling but having had a mk1 vrs I did have the expectation that the mk2 would be an improvement on that but I honestly feel a standard mk1 is a better balanced package of performance vs handling. The brakes are soft and spongy with an inconsistent vague feel, on one press of the pedal it can be firm with a reasonable feel then the next press can be long, spongy and vague which is always a frustration in spirited driving. When compared to the mk1 the cabin is a bit more noisy and rattles are more common place which is a shame.

General information, car is standard apart from rear weights that were removed around the 250 mile mark, oil usage is very good, approx 700ml in 10,000 miles. average fuel economy is 25mpg and tyre wear at 5/6000 miles to a pair of front continentals.

So this weekend the mods start, H&R springs, Bilstein B8 shocks and a Poly bush kit comprising of rear beam mounting, front bottom arm front/rear bushes and front arb. Brake upgrades are in the pipeline for mid summer and Federal RSR's are to be fitted in a couple of weeks.

Hoping that little lot will turn a great engine and gearbox in to a great car.

Nice to read this and find that its not just me who thinks the brakes are poor, and the handling isn't as good as it could be..

In fact i`d 100% agree with your review....

  2. For a while anyway, then we will see if it is the Drivers Side Drive shaft / CV.

Still interested in this ECU Reset they did, just a reset, or an Upload of an Update on the ECU.

yet no Service Campaign is required on your DSG.

Mentioned that today and the tech said that they had re-set and made sure that it had the latest software, mind you they could be talking s*%@....

  3. When he was checking out the noise,

did you ask him about the issue you had with loss of Drive before,

    and has that happened again?

So what was wrong with the Discs & Pads,

    were the discs scored badly.?

They were to do a 'Full Condition Check', before selling a Skoda Approved Car,

so only needing replaced when a Customer Complains.

The DSG has been fine since it was in and had software re-set.

Checked with SkodaUK and it didn't require the service campaign.

Well, they said that under normal circumstances the discs and pads would not have been replaced, but due to the noise they would as they wanted the `customer` to be `happy`.

I can not believe that the tech who drove the car and then drove after new discs/pads couldn't tell there was no difference, the car was handed back to me as if it was sorted...

    So,tyres replaced,car quieter,but still a drone/hum,front brakes replaced still noise.

I`m told its the wrong noise for a bearing, which to be fair ,I would agree with....

Looks like I may just have to persevere with it...........

  4. Jack it up, spin the wheel, have someone apply the brakes a little, see if the Pads are releasing.

Try the Wheel for the bearing play.

Drop the car, loosen the nuts, remove the wheels and take the pads out and see how they are.

Only way you will know if not already done.

Cheers mate, gonna get it to the garage to be checked out..Again..

Mind you. I'm losing faith in my local dealer...

  5. Actually, when you mention it,the edge of the drivers side front disc is a little rusty,I would actually say that the disc dos'nt have that full silver shine if you know what I mean,I'll post a PIC later..

The noise does get a bit louder after a few miles, and when I brake the sound does quiten...

    Cheers

This is what the brake disc looks like...post-36138-0-31460500-1428163512_thumb.jpg

And that's after 12 miles with braking at numerous roundabouts!!

  6. Tyre noises are very noticeable and tyre choices, and then different road surfaces have different noises.

I have no Parcel shelf on a Hatch and it sounds the same as an Estate i sometimes drive,

but put the Parcel self on the hatch and road noise is less noticeable.

& then the exhaust noise does start to change as the Resonator gets older IME.

If it is a Wheel Bearing then you are going to have to find which one, because other wise people are guessing.

As a trial, go drive a bit of road, and see how it sounds,

inflate the tyres by about 5 psi and see if there is much difference.

then let the tyres back down obviously after the test. Its just to see if it is Tyre noise or you can pick up on a wheel bearing.

More often it is brakes making a bit of noise.

In the other post you were saying the brakes are not great,

so are the disc edges rusty and have you checked the pads.?

Your can is pretty low mileage but that does not mean the pads are not shot.

Actually, when you mention it,the edge of the drivers side front disc is a little rusty,I would actually say that the disc dos'nt have that full silver shine if you know what I mean,I'll post a PIC later..

The noise does get a bit louder after a few miles, and when I brake the sound does quiten...

    Cheers

  7. Further update on the tyre situation.....

Having just travelled 500 miles around Argyll,it seems that the drone is coming back and getting louder.

Surely not the tyres after 1000 miles since fitting??

Could the noise actually be a wheel bearing...

I did notice when braking the noise quietens and on some road surfaces its louder....

What is going on,this noise is really spoiling the car.....

  8. You get someone with VAGCOM to check the settings.

But if you are back at the Dealers having the DSG checked get them to be sure that Steering Assist , Brake Assist and the XDS settings are at Factory settings.

    ??

Did you check if the DSG has had the Service Campaign Oil Change and ECU Update done?

I'm away at the moment, but I'll check it out when I'm back..

    Cheers..

  9. I travel Scotland all the time in a vRS and virtually never use the brakes due to how good the DSG is for decelerating.

Standard brakes do the job when the pads are OK and the brake fluid.

If you have bought a used car, have you looked at the pads to see how they are, and do you know they are standard.

You also need to check and see if the 'Brake Assist' is set as standard, because it is not unknown for some owners to reduce the brake assist.

Cheers.. How do I go about checking brake assist...

    Cheers..

  10. Hello all.

I'm currently travelling around Scotland, up and down mountain passes.

I feel the brakes on my Vrs could do with 'a but more bite'

What tends to be a good pad set up with standard size discs?

Or do others think their brakes are OK?

    Cheers all..

  11. Has the DQ200 DSG 7 Speed Twin Clutch had the Service Campaign Field Action since the Service Campaign Started last May?

The Synthetic OIl replaced with Mineral Oil & the DSG Software Updated & a Sticker in the boot to show it is done.

Is this what was done yesterday,

or did they just reset the ECU yesterday because they found no Fault Codes?

    goneoffSKi..

No oil changed in the DSG,they just re-set the control unit for the gearbox..(or car ECU)

If it needed the oil changed surely they would be aware and do it??

    Cheers....

  12. Best call Skoda UK Customer Services on Monday, get them to check if your car requires the Service Campaign,

Inform them you may have had Loss of Drive & you are concerned.

Get a Case Number, and have them arrange the Collection of your car, and arrange a Courtesy Car,

or for a Qualified Technician to check your car.

Do not take risks, and Skoda UK should not allow you to.

Let one of the Skoda Technicians drive your car if they do not think it is a safety issue.

    PS.

If a 'Skoda Approved Used Car',

it should have had an Inspection a HPI and the Service Campaign Items carried out if they were outstanding.

(oddly Skoda Official Approved Cars often are sold with outstanding Service Campaign work not carried out,

because not all cars get Serviced before they sell them.)

    PPS

    Just read your posts,

Rear Wiper not working.  Droning noise and could it be a wheel Bearing?

So much for 'Skoda Approved Used Cars'

and Trained Technicians checking them before sale.

    http://skoda.co.uk/used-cars/advantages-of-skoda-used-cars

    Yeah,regarding the PPS......

I did question whether the car was actually checked before I picked it up...

Personally I think it was cleaned and that was about it..

We`ll see what happens tomorrow eh.....

  14. stevrs08.

    More info needed.

Like How old the car is, so what reg,

    how many miles,

did it get the DSG Service Campaign work done already. ?

Same as this except they do not change the MCU in the UK until it behaves like your car might just have.

    http://skoda.co.nz/news/dsg-service-campaign

    goneoffski...

The car is a Sept 2012 and has just turned 26000 miles.

Not sure about the service campaign though...

The car is an approved used with 2 previous owners....

    Cheers....

  15. Hello all.

Still getting used to the DSG,and I have a quick question.....

Going downhill in manual 4th gear, the revs suddenly dropped to idle,i was braking at the time, then when I let off the brakes, the revs went back up to around 3k RPM as they were...

Does this seem normal......I hope so.......

    Thanks all......

  16. I put in a RNS 315 this weekend, Mine has Bluetooth built in but doesn't have the DAB, but there are versions out there that have DAB as well as Bluetooth and some that have neither, but there seem to be loads going around the £300 mark just have to be patient to drop on one really at a good price.

Does the steering wheel controls and reverse sensor graphics work with this unit?

And does it simply plug in?

    Cheers.....
