Hi all.
I hav`nt posted on here for ages but i am needing some advice on my air con.--
It has`nt been very cold from the vents so i got the system re-gassed yesterday, the system was very low on gas.
It was then icy cold but today even after 20 mins on full blower speed the air was only cool.
Any ideas why this is???
This has got to be the poorest air-con on any car i have had but i`m sure it was always icy when i got the car 19 months ago..
Thanks in advance folks.............................
PS its not on ECON.

Hi all.
As thread title really, what is the standard boost pressure on a `04 standard Mk1 Vrs?
Thanks in advance.....................

Hi all.
My brake pad warning light has just recently came on.
The car had new discs last year just before i bought it but i cannot be sure if the pads were replaced.
There looks to be plenty of meat left on them.
The question i have is is there a fixed brake check like the fixed servicing or could it be that the pads are in fact getting low.
I`m sure i read somewhere that the service light and brake check light can come on at the same time if the fixed interval has elapsed,i`ve just today re-set the service light after i serviced the car this morning.
Thanks in advance.......

Thanks for the post`s people!!
Finally got round to doing the job today.
Quite an easy task really.
Removed the starter and cleaned it up and greased it.
Now the car starts without the still engaged screech.
Now thats saved me some money.......for now.

Hi all and Seasons Greetings...
Hav`nt posted for a while, but i`m going to have to as i have a sticking starter motor.
i`m going to remove and give it a clean, but i`m wondering what size the bolts are that hold it on??
It`s a bit dark, wet and miserable to go out and pop the bonnet,so i thought i would post on here instead.Ha Ha.
2004 Vrs Estate.
thanks in advance folks.............................

Well i dropped the car off at my mates garage as i did`nt really want to mess around with the fuel system. The fault was traced to a blockage in a breather hose.Everything seems OK now.
Thanks for the help though:thumbup::thumbup:

Well,i had a wee look around the engine bay, nothing obviously wrong but theres still a lot of pressure in there, any more suggestions??
Put fuel in today and it took about 1 minute to let the pressure out!!
-
Thanks,i`ll have a look at this.It could be,like i said the cambelts just been done,so the connector could quite easily have been dislodged....
i`ll let you know how i get on.TA MUCH.

Hi all.As the thread is titled, pulled up outside my house earlier to the smell of fuel, then noticed it spilling from the filler neck/cap.Seems like a build up of pressure, when i slowly removed the cap it let pressure off for about 30 secs and you could hear the fuel tank contracting.
It`s just had cambelt done, could anything get knocked that would cause this??
PS Octavia VRS 2004,estate.
Thanks in advance peeps....................

Hiya folks.
Seen as my Octy VRS is 4 years old and has 40k on the clock,i`m going to get the cambelt done, and the water pump uprated to the metal impellor one at the same time.
Just wondering how much you guys have paid for this job???

If you`re only doing short trips, the service indicator will come on a lot sooner than if you were doing long motorway journeys.
If you are doing long journeys then i don`t know....

Yeah it's your secondary air pump mate.
It is normal from cold start, and will make a fan-like noise. There is a common problem with the rivets holding the pump together corroding away and allowing a gap, causing extra noise. Easy fix it to just drill out the rivets and replace with bolts (there is a guide on here, cos someone asked this last week). If you want to inspect it for this, just get under the car and have a look at it, it's just infront of the sump.
It's no major problem though, and won't effect your car in any terrible way! The cheap plastic air pump just pumps fresh air down the exhaust, to initiate the combustion of exhaust gases in the cat during cold start, heating it up more quickly for emissions. (VVT also operates in this period, setting the valves to a 'massive overlap' period). Some people report a 'pod racer' like sound coming from the exhaust while the pump runs, others report very rough running due to it. All in the name of emissions....
Basically don't be surprised if ur car runs like a bag of turds for the first couple of mins from cold! The VVT and secondary air pump screw with it big time!
I`ve only had the VRS a couple of weeks and i thought it sounded like the zorst was blowing, and was ruff as f=*k when cold.
Itall makes sense now:thumbup:

This thread has me well confused.
Does an atmospheric DV deffo cause a diagnostic fault on the VRS?
I`ve had a R5 GT Turbo and a couple of Subaru`s and all had a atmospheric DV fitted with no probs.
Both Subarus had re-circ valves as standard, the returns to the air box are simply blocked off so the air dumps through the valve rather than being silently re-circed back to the air box, more to do with cabin comfort imo.
Any how,the DV will dump anytime there is pressure in the intake system, when you let of the throttle,so long as the turbo has started to spin up,ie@3000RPM it will only slightly dump,at 6000RPM it will propper dump.
At 70 MPH on a motorway it will only dump when you have had the turbo spin up,but it will not be that noticable as you`re engine will only be doing say 3500RPM.
The wastegate opens when max boost is reached,so the pressure dos`nt keep increasing and blow the engine up.
All a DV does is release the air into the atmosphere which would otherwise re-circ to the airbox/intake system creating a whoosh or flutter, depending on which valve is fitted, but thats another discussion!
Some cars don`t tick over correctly with a DV fitted, but i think these probs are overcome with twin piston DV`s,again, another discussion.
Can somone please clarify the prob with a Atmospheric DV on the Mk1 VRS before i actually fit one.............................

I think the sensor is for the level. You can see the coolant temperature on the dashboard - that's measured by a different sensor, sort of in the middle-top area of the engine. Do a search for "green temperature sensor" and you'll probably find it.
When my expansion tank sensor was playing up, the red light flashed.
Right then,i think i`ll get the expansion tank replaced, that should deffo sort it!!
CHEERS FELLA:thumbup:
-
Well the temp light came on again today after i thought i`d sorted it.
This time it came on when the car was idling, before i left work, but was flashing wheras before it was solid red.
Is it the same fault-dodgy sensor or something new?As before once warm the light did`nt come on when the ignition was switched on.
Is the sensor in the expansion tank for temp or level?

I dont' think you can as it well probably use different commands.
I have a 12 disc JVC changer if your after a one.
Thanks for the offer, but i`ll probably just disconnect the Sony changer and transfer music to the flash drive for use with th JVC.
If the JVC would "talk" to the Sony,i would have left it connected, but if it won`t its no prob.
Thought i would enquire whilst the dash is apart!!
Thanks though.............
-
Does anyone know if it is possible to gat a JVC head unit to operate a Sony 10 disc autochanger?
The connections are present and correct on the JVC unit and when switched on you can hear the Sony changer working, but when i scroll through the sorce button on the JVC it misses the changer from its list,ie,
FM,disc,USB,(changer).:confused::confused::confused::confused:
Everything else works fine.................

Hi i have a 1.6 1998 S Reg Mk1 octavia and recently me and the mrs have been putting more money in the car for petrol we have also noticed this on a run aswell.
When we put the computer display on the dash it says the car is doing around 16mpg in town when at lights and junctions this goes down to 14 then when we get a bit of momentum going it goes to between 16 and 17  mpg, its the same on a run keeping at a steady 60 its displaying a return of between 23 to 27 mpg , surley this cant be right for a 1.6.
I know they are quite heavy cars etc but this is a joke and its costing us more to run since we first noticed it around 3 weeks ago.
What could be causing this and does it sound expensive and what should the car be returning?
Thanks for any help:thumbup:
Can`t put a finger on a fault, but there must be something wrong,i was getting those figures from a 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX STI type UK running @265bhp,0-60 5.1 Seconds.
Might be worth changing you`re air filter though.....
-
can you let me know if and when you solve this issue as i have the same problem on my 04 oct vrs but not done nothing about it yet
Will try and have a look sometime soon...............................
-
Do the switches simply lift out:confused:
-
I`ve just noticed that the switch to lock the rear windows dos`nt work on my MK1 Octy VRS.
Anyone had this fault before, easy to sort or maybe a new switch:confused:
Thanks in advance.................

Not Very Cold Air-Con,Any Ideas?

Thanks for the replys everyone.
Seems like i may have a leak somewhere, the garage should perhaps have filled with a dye to check for leaks as the gas was very low rather than just re-filled it,useless barstewards..
Had the air-con on today and again only cool,bummer...
More expense....
THANKS PEOPLE
