  1. It seems there are quite a few secret features that can be enabled using VAG-COM. I have stumbled across a few talked about on the forums. My friend also has a Skoda Octavia MK2, and has a VAG-COM - which he is going to play with on my car when I see him next week.

Before I go to meet him, it would be good to get an idea of what secret features could be enabled using it. So far I am interested in enabling:

    Auto Locking

As I understand it, there is a mode you can enable which locks the doors when you drive off, and unlocks them when you pull the key from the ignition. I'm a paranoid pete so quite often lock the doors when I get in, but sometimes forget to do it, and if I do it, it is a pain to have to pull the handle twice to get out.

    Emergency Stop Hazard Lights

I have read that you can enable a feature that flashes the hazard lights if you have to slam on the anchors. Would be very useful to help prevent someone driving up my **** if I had to do an emergency stop.

Are there any other features that can be enabled using VAG-COM (or other methods?).

Is it dangerous to use VAG-COM? I read that someone managed to wipe their car's memory and it suddenly became a very fancy paperweight. Is there a way to do a backup before I mess around with things, and a way to restore this backup if things do go tits up? I don't fancy being stuck 150 miles from home with a car that won't do anything.

Also, is it possible for a dealer to know if you have used a VAG-COM? Will they overwrite your new settings at a service? My car is out of warranty, so I don't want to break it, or do something that will leave a dealer telling me to go forth and multiply.

    Cheers! :)

  2. I have one of these in my boot, came with the car when I bought it second hand. I find the flat loading area to be useful, as the lip can be annoying as things can get lodged and stuck. Also nice to have even more hidey holes to put stuff away, I use the space at the sides and in the box to house crap that I carry all the time - that way it doesn't get mixed up with stuff that I carry temporarily.

I have an estate so the space it takes up isn't really an issue. Thanks to the guy who posted the umbrella pic, I didn't realise I had that box too! This car must be great for smuggling drugs!

  3. I've just bought a mk2 skoda octavia elegance, but the indicators don't cancel themselves after making a turning. Could this be something to do with the steering wheel position? The indicators were cancelling themselves, but then I moved the steering wheel and it doesn't cancel itself anymore.

I've just picked the car up today, and two people have driven it and played around with the steering wheel adjustment. So not sure if this is related to the problem?

Anyone had this happen before? Whats the default steering wheel position? (all the way in, and up?)

  4. I am looking to buy a second hand Skoda Octavia MK2. Prices seem to vary massively depending on the type (classic, ambient, elegance, vrs), I have noticed quite a few local to me that have well over 100,000 miles.

I am looking for a cheap, safe, reliable, economical, family car and although this fits the bill my only concern is servicing costs for cars that have done a lot of miles. I've heard of taxi's doing over a million miles, but what sort of service costs am I looking at for a Octavia MK2 thats done over 100,000 miles, is there any nasty suprises with something expensive needs replacing at a certain amount of miles?

  5. A friend of mine, who also lurks around on here, has gone to the US for a month. So he has kindly lent me his Skoda Octavia to try out as I would like to buy a family car. It is a MK2 (55 plate) TDI (1.9/2.0 PD?). It is an "Elegance" trim if that matters.

Anyway, I have never driven a diesel before now, just several 1.0-1.4 petrols. I love everything about this car, except for one problem - I keep stalling the bloody thing in second gear! It's driving me insane.

If I am on a perfectly flat surface, like our car park, I can get the car to pull away in 2nd gear and drive on as normal. If I am on the road, doing under 10mph, change from 3rd into 2nd and I try to pull away I always stall it. No matter how slowly I release the clutch, or how high I rev the engine, it will stall.

An example of this is coming up to a T-junction and slowing down when coming towards the dotted line, to check if it is clear to proceed. If I end up stopping or going below 5mph, but don't remember to change into 1st, I stall it.

The car just seems far too fussy about what gear it is in. I was told by my friend that apparently the car's computer even tries to compensate by increasing the revs if it feels it is going to stall. My ****! So either I am a crap driver, or there's something seriously wrong with this car.

  6. Hi

I am a new member here so thought I would say hi. I don't own a Skoda yet, but would like to save up and get a Skoda Fabia vRS. Hopefully I can learn a bit about them here, and possibly buy one from a member at some point - unless you lot rag them to an inch of their lives!

A friend of mine told me about the site, not sure what his username is here but hi Chris! He used to have a Skoda Fabia vRS but traded it in for a Skoda Octavia (not vRS, not sure what engine it is tho) because he needed a bigger car to use as his mobile sandwich packets skip. ;)

I was really surprised when he took me out in his Fabia, it is sooo quick for overtaking and just has usable power all the time. It almost reminded me of what my bike was like, I used to have a Suzuki SV650s, but I have sold it now. I used to be a fan of the VW Golf, but nowadays its just expensive, heavy and boring.

I used to own an old Peugeot 309 but I got rid of it when it failed its MOT, so now I borrow my old dears' VW Lupo 1.4. Its pretty gutless, you really have to rag it to get it to move, and it's really fussy about what gear it is in. The gearbox is just awful. If you put it in reverse, then try putting it into 1st, you either manage it but the sod stalls if you dont rev the nuts off of it - or you get 3rd and it just dies. I've been told I am pretty good at being in the right gear at the right time so I don't think it is me. :o

I know that sounds a bit lame but I cant think of any other way of putting it. I drive enthusiastically, not like a **** anymore - I am older and wiser now! I am always listening to the engine, and thinking about various things like revs/speed/gear/road steepness/etc, to be in the gear that will give me the best performance at the time.

Anyway, now the boring bit is over, the card's behind the virtual bar, what you having?

    Cheers

    Luke
