  1. i meant to post about this a while ago when i first took my car in about pas problems' date=' i got told where the fluid is by the most aggressive technican ever after he tried to show me on a new showroom faiba the newer fabs the resovouir is easy to get to, my fabia hidden under the battery and all the plastic which u have remove to get to, as u can understand something that will take 15 mins rather then 1 min lol

if the lights flickering on and off and ur losing steering its most likely the pas sensor which skoda paid 50% towards on mine warranty the other 50 and i paid a big fat 0 :)[/quote']

    Thanks for your reply.

I found a pale green screw cap and guessed that is must be power steering fluid reservoir. The cap has a short plastic 'dip stick' that was only just touching the level of the fluid. Called local dealership who said I could take it in later in the afternoon for them to plug it in to look for error codes. However it would be Wednesday before they could book it in once they had ordered parts.

I took it round the local independent servicing garage described the intermittent nature of the fault and within 3 minutes  the reservoir had been topped up and fault has now gone. No sign of a leak and only a small amount of PAS fluid used to top up. (First time in my knowledge since I bought it in 2000)

I have to say I am disappointed with the Skoda dealers service desk response. I feel I would have turned up in the afternoon after struggling several miles with the steering, to be told it was a sensor and then having to leave it and get a taxi or bus home (because they never have courtesy cars) or drive home struggling with the steering to return it later in the week for the fix. Bet they would have topped of the reservoir and charged me for some part! I think independent dealers have a lot going for them and my opinion of franchised garages is very low at the moment considering the labour charges and the experiences of my family and friends with their Skodas.

  2. i think you will find that it's a problem with the sensor rather than the fluid.

Whereabouts is the sensor on a year 2000 Fabia 16V? Can I clean the electrical contact etc?

If I can see the power steering reservoir I will check the level and top up if needed.

I have the symptom where this warning lamp now is lit. Steering is unimaginably heavy and I fear to drive it. Garage says they need to plug it in to diagnose and whether it is the sensor or the pump or otherwise it will be a few days before they can fix. What can I do in the mean time.

  3. I am considering buying a DELL 5150 online. There are various offers' date=' the last one was for a free printer, but i have been told that the catridges are very expensive, and to go for another brand.

I am looking for some opinions from anyone who knows anything about DELL.

There are different offers every week at the moment. Do they put on better deals coming up to christmas??

    JD[/quote']

    Hi JD,

Yes Dell are doing different offers every week at the moment.

Their current promotion for Dell 5150 at the moment.

    10% OFF: Dimension 5150 (Bundles D11515, D11516B, D11516, D11516A, D11517)

This discount is added once you have selected the item into your basket and the discounted price is shown at the checkout.

However I have seen some comments that just last week the prices were cheaper than this week even after taking into account the discount offered this week. Some systems have been treated to a double memory included in the price.

Deals seem to end on a Wednesday so check on a Thursday morning for new offers. I am sure coming up to Christmas prices may scale up. Post Christmas who knows.

    regards

    Ian

  4. Just looking at buying a PDA for sat nav use.

Wondered what people on here have bought and if anyone knows of any good deals anywhere.

Also please give feedback on reliability of your own purchase.

I selected a Dell Axim X30 that has BT and Wireless 802.11b.

Great for contacts, appointments and playing movies that I have grabbed and shrunk! Cost about

  5. Glad to hear you managed your install to your satisfaction. Some pics would be great to see.!

Well I finally found the mystery grommet. The first grommet all you lucky vRS owners have isn't on mine though. I have no idea why but my engine bay is different to the one featured in the power cable guide. I drilled a hole in the thin piece of metal (no idea what its called) and now all is happy. All cables stealthed away' date=' ipod mounted in glove box. Tommorow finishing touches and running speaker cable down the drivers side :D

If anyones interested I'll put some piccies up.[/quote']

  6. Thanks for the informative review.

Well, having had two courtesey cars in the past two weeks (darned rattles!), I can now compare the two engines. Both cars were Ambiente Estates in Stone Grey, the diesel (05 plate) had 5500 miles on the clock, and the petrol (54 plate) just 4200 miles.

Well, before the engine, I reckon the estate is a bloody brilliant, versatile car. It doesn't feel any different from the hatch to drive, and the boot is positively huge. Ambiente seems like a pretty decent spec too. Air con, electric windows and mirrors, remote central locking, CD player etc. The seat materials and the door cards of of a brilliant quality too - seem much more durable than the vRS ones. The dash does seem a little too plain though - I prefer the new material and the glitzy bits in the vRS. I'd also recommed the leather pack - the plastic gear knob and steering wheel don't feel too great. The stone grey is a lovely colour (why such a limited choice for the vRS :( ).

The suspension seems really smooth on both cars, absorbing bumps and potholes well, yet still cornering pretty good too. I'm sure the massive profile tyres help loads in the comfort stakes! The diesel (1.9 TDi 100bhp) seems more planted, but slightly less agile. The steering is a little more precise on the 1.4 too. Also, the brakes on both cars are great, the 1.4 16v (100bhp) seeming to bite better at first, but overall the brakes seeming equally powerful on both cars. I can only put all this down to the sheer weight of the diesel lump.

Regarding the engines, the 1.9TDi is a VERY capable engine. The gearing is sensible, and effortless progress can be made by using the torque thats available low down in the rev range. The 1.4 16v is lively when revved, but seems to lack low down grunt. The clutch on the 1.4 is also very light compared to the diesel's.

The refinement of both cars is good. The engine noise on the petrol is barely audible in town (it has a nice hummm), but is quite harsh at higher speeds imo. The opposite in the case of the diesel, noisy round town but really quiet on the motorway.

The fuel economy on the 1.4 was just over 40mpg mixed town and motorway, and the 1.9 - 61mpg on the same run!

To conclude, I think the Fabia Ambiente estate is a great car, but the engines are very different. If I spent most of my time around town, the petrol would get my vote, as the engine is quiet and the clutch is really easy to control. I doubt there is any difference in economy around town either. For those drivers like myself that live out of town, and spend 15,000 miles a year on the motorway, the diesel wins hands down, with the effortless power and extra refinement being worth every penny of the

  7. Oh no! BRISKODA has changed! What has happened to the forums? Where are all my posts gone?

Well' date=' after more than 2 years it has become apparent that the current forums where due a long overdue overhaul. Not only was it unclear where to post your questions, it also became unmanagable due to the many forum customisations that have been added on over time. Add to this the launch of the new BRISKODA Freedom scheme, we knew we had to change. So here it is!

Welcome back. Hope there were not too many technical difficulties or stressful moments.

    TTFN.

  8. Less weight - better fuel economy.

    Hi folks

I managed to get a copy of the Jan 2003 Auto Express review of the octy estate. I noticed in pics that test car had sound deadening under bonnet. My Sept 03 does not' date=' I questioned this with Skoda dealer who sold it to me in a phone call and he said he checked another, he also said did not have it. What's the answer should it have or not have sound deadening?

  9. I've been offered some VW alloys with 175/80 r14 tyres on. The wheels on at the moment are also 14" but have 185/60 r14 (standard size) tyres on.

Are they safe to use or will they catch or grip the road less.

The cars a Fabia PD100 Comfort.

    Hi Grant' date='

Visited the Car Maintenance Bible - [url']http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/[/url]

He has a Wheel and tyre bible http://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/tyre_bible.html

This page lets you input values of the old and new wheel / tyre sizes which show whether the rolling radius and circumference will be similar.

I have captured on a Word doc the pertinent calcs for your current and prospective new wheel size/tyre size. The upshot is that the tyres your mate has for sale are a much higher circumference and will cause your speedo to under-read by 10%. Not good for avoiding speed camera penalties.

  10. Good that you've reported it - the Police have advised me they want everything reporting, even if you think they won't be able to do anything about it. There may be a pattern detectable...

Exactly what I thought. If crimes, however petty, go unreported, how do the police justify existing staffing levels? Nevermind seeking extra manpower!

I worry, even if the offenders are just youths or whether it is drunken behaviour, what other offences could be committed by such people.
