  1. Morning folks :)

Long time not on here...that poxy thing called work keeps getting in the way!

Anyhoo have a wee problem that I noticed yesterday, the car 2011 diesel Octy VRS slipped out of sixth gear a few times yesterday on the motorway. At first I thought I hadn't engaged the gear correctly so it wasn't sitting right, but it did the same thing a few mins later. Should I be worried of a big bill or could there be a simple solution?

    Cheers folks

    Kit :)

  2. Afternoon all :)

Looking for a bit of info here, I have a 2011 Vrs hatch and my GF has a dodgy old Astra estate. I'm looking for a set up that allows me to use roof bars and bike carrier, probably Thule Pro Ride on my motor then transfer the bike carrier to hers when she needs it...question is will a Thule Pro Ride bike carrier fit on basic universal bars or will they only fit on Thule bars? At the mo she has the front to back runner things and uses her brother in laws bars and roof box off his Alfa.

    Cheers :)

  3. Bought a Whyte 901 16-17 season model 6 months ago with the internal cabling and 650b wheels and its fab, great XC and downhill, great long distance and I can pack it with all my gear and go bike packing. Think I paid just over 1100 euro and got it on the bike to work scheme.

    The experience curve continues:

Bought some hexes, a removal tool and headed out to Brown Cove Crags at Helvellyn again. This time with three friends, my main walking companion and two less experienced friends (luckily they chose the grade two scramble up one of the gullies). Dave and I chose the grade 3, we harnessed, roped up and started to practice 'moving together'. In very rudimentary terms. We succeeded in finding natural anchors, although we never actually placed the hexes. So under prepared. I had seen the forecast (full sunshine, 15°c) and hadn't in the slightest anticipated there being snow on the ground. Bad form by me. Hence we had not brought crampons or ice axes. This made the traversing across to the start of the grade 3, down climbing a gully 50m or so to get to a chimney particularly hazardous. Thankfully the snow was soft enough to kick toes into and made for good holds.

Then came the chimney. Three quarters of it was a simple enough snow slog, the last quarter however, was a definite climb. In snow. With no crampons, axes or adequate protection.

The dog went in my ruck sack once things got too steep even for a Quattro enabled creature.

Once out of the chimney there was still a few obstacles that really had us pinned down and thinking on our feet.

We came away from it humbled. I intend to forego further grade 3 scrambles in snow, in favour of grade 2 where we can plod along practicing our moving together and protection placement.

The day after my friend went straight upto Keswick and spent £200 on rope, slings and a full set of nuts. We now have nuts, removal tool, slings, hexes, rope, belay devices and harnesses. I will be buying some more slings as they would of been ideal as easy pro on natural anchors whilst moving together, also requiring little effort to remove/'clean'.

We'll both be watching many a 'moving together how to' tutorial online before our next outing too.

We knew we were out of our depth when I came across old pitons hammered into the Rock... Not particularly encouraging to see when you intended to be scrambling, and definitely not rock climbing!

Off to the wall again tonight to continue practicing lead climbing.

Also off to Lancaster Grand Theatre tomorrow night to see the 'Banff Film festival'

a collection of adventure, mountaineering and climbing short films. Should make for interesting viewing.

I await your abuse and concerns for being ill equipped and under prepared! I'll accept it on the chin.

Ohhh once you start buying stuff you become a gear junkie in no time.....when I sold a load of gear last year I ended up selling three sets of axes and three pairs of crampons!!! I could only have worn and used one at a time!!!!

As Brekie says...learn how to bail out but of course if its safe, style it out as well :) Plus learn how to be disappointed as well...you plan a trip for months, book a flight sort out the logistics then it goes side ways on the first day, either kack weather, gear breaks or like one trip a group across the glen got caught in an avalanche and we had to go help.

The main think is though is to enjoy it and enjoy hanging out with your mates...see what I did there :)

  5. No idea...it worked the same as an STS box, I downloaded my original map onto it, sent it back to them and then they put the new map on to it and sent it back to me, I then downloaded onto my car. When I sold the car I switched the map back to standard and I was left with the STS box with the performance map on it.

  6. I've just found the Star Performance OBD plug in box that I had when they did the map for my Fabia MK1 VRS. Not sure if its worth anything to anybody but if it is then someone can have it for free if they just want to sort the postage. Again it could be worthless or it could just be what someone is looking for, I don't know, but if you want it here is....or its going in the bin.

Posting in here to get more attention...hope that's ok

Dont get me wrong, I'd never have my dog running free in the car, he always has his harness on and is secure.

Wasn't meaning you Matt, was about a point the OP asked saying can I transport puppy in the foot well.

  8. I did what was mentioned above with my staffy when she was a pup, open the boot and put a blanket and toys in there and just left her to go in and out. I would never consider putting a dog in the foot well or on the seats. A friend of mine had her staffy on the back seat when she was in a crash, not only did the staffy end up bouncing down the road but it had flattened the front passenger seat on its way through the windscreen :(

  9. ^^^^^ what's been said above, being a wall monkey is great but being hill fit and hill experienced take years. My GF is gym/marathon/wall fit but lags waaaayyy behind me when we are on the hill. Use the wall for technique but get outside as much as you can and put yourself in different scenarios. Its all great breaking a leg indoors and having an ambo ten minutes away but think about when your on some crag in the butt end of nowhere. Being on the hill is a never ending lesson, you'll never stop learning.

Both flavours available at my local Budgens, but 2.99 for the chili and 3.49 for the tikka. Thought you might not thank me for buying lots at those prices?

Thanks for not getting them.... not at that price!! :(

Think they have them in the Poundland in Newry and as heading up that way next week I'll drop in and get some.

Thanks everyone for the offers to get them.... great bunch of folk on here :)

Ohhh that's the jail!...Just like no salt and vinegar square crisps down here!! :(

That would be great thanks, i've just signed up to some wholesale company in the UK but they have to vet me first before I can order!!

Spotted those and decided that would be a big NO

Apparently Poundland have them in a good bit :)

May be able to help here. Local Waitrose doesn't have the 'flavours' you list, but I'm pretty sure my local Budgen shop sells a good selection, and it's barely out of my way on the trip home. Will pop in tonight and see.
