  2. There goes my 15 minutes of fame! No problems - probably didn't make much sense then!

Assume nothing can be done apropos the clutch travel - I find that the most annoying.

Always had my old GTi's set up to work on the smallest of pedal depression and got used to it, so I guess I'll just have to take it sloooooowwwwwer

Oh well. At least I don't kangaroo in traffic...

  3. Can't comment on the longevity of a Ka - but a hoot to drive - at least you would be smiling after end of your journey (self destructing sumps and sudden timworm attacks notwithstanding) And can be serviced by anyone, anywhere, even a passing bedouin tribe in the desert.

OR, if you are feeling really mean, how about something like a J reg Polo? Carbs were a bit iffy (change it for a Weber) but bodies generally don't rot that badly - if at all - and the handling can be, er, entertaining especially in the wet. No toys mind, so be back to winding the windows but much less to go wrong.

Cheap to buy and insure and they run on fumes. Trouble is, they are getting on and good ones are probably getting thin on the ground. There aren't many 20 year old cars out there of that type that last so well, however. Don't worry too much about one that's been to the moon and back - they handle the big mileages well but the usual servicing caveats apply.

  4. Go with Liverpool Victoria, mate!

Yes, called them first but for some reason there were not that competitive for me - a pity because of all the good comments I've seen on here.

I was zapped on Solsbury Hill, the A46 coming out of Bath - a new dual carriageway section with good visibility, not a building in site and... a 50mph limit.

They even have a Gatso on the new section south of the A4 -obviously there must have been the requisite number of serious accidents in the middle of the field they built on to justify placing it there.

    :D

  5. Andy, perhaps I didn't put my point very well - what I mean is that it is the younger buyers are probably more receptive to a performance diesel at the moment. As you quite rightly say, lots of them are learning in punchy diesels and liking them. Convincing some people who hasn't driven one in 20 years is obviously going to be a little harder!

BTW - I have driven diesels and like 'em! Lurv my vRS though...

  6. I think it would be a bold move if they produced a diesel only vRS - it would be a bit of a ground breaker in this segment. however, while the case for the Furby vRS to burn oil is strong - lower overall running costs coupled to a younger customer base - I'm not convinced about the Octy. The mid-size owners have a tendancy to be, shall we say more conservative. Look at the designs of all the cars in this sector - not exactly avant-garde! If it's produced it will sell but will it sell well enough? In this sector a two pronged attack would probably be safer.

The age of the perfomance diesel is well and truly upon us but petrol isn't going to disappear overnight? I vote for a peaceful co-existance!

  7. Sorry guys, didn't mean to cause any offence, actually I like diesels but like my petrol too. A choice would be a good thing but it may not come to that.

BTW, how much heavier is the diesel lump than a 1.8T? I know diesel engines used to weigh the same as a bus load of Sumo wrestlers but are much lighter nowadays. Be interesting to know the difference. That would be of more concern to me than what pump I pull up to.

  8. Must admit to not really understandng why an amp in needed........is it just to get a louder system? Or is it that the higher quality components speakers require a separate power source to drive them?

Bit of both, really. Highe quality speakers do need more power to drive them - they tend to be disgned with that in mind

Sure, an external amp will make more noise but the important thing is the quality of that noise - HU amps tend to get very thrashy when pushed and lose definition. External amps though, just get er, louder and keep their composure. I guess it's the sort of thing you don't notice until you do the comparison.

Far too many long words this time on a Friday night...

  9. I'm also surprised that actuaries have a sense of humour. They've always been defined to me as people who found accountancy too exciting!

Ooo, very doubtful. traitor in their midst, methinks. Surely an actuarie's idea of a joke? Hold on...
