  1. I'd rather put the car through a hedge, with or without full link, than buy an iphone!

    The texts was an example.

Does it work or not would be the main question?

I have a G4 and a recent Octy with Smartlink and it like it.

As people have said a great cheap option of SatNav. I sent a text message the other day (while Google Maps was navigating) and it worked well. I figured Google's voice recognition algorithms are going to be much better than anything that VAG will produce. You can even ask Google questions like with Google Now "what time is is in New York" and you get a nicely spoken answer.

Mirrorlink does not work on G4 and it does not seem to be supported as much as Android Auto , which is only going to get much much better. It is early days yet for these systems.

For people who are not getting a good connection, make sure Android Auto is set to the connection preference rather than letting the phone decided. It seems to try connecting with Mirrorlink first.

All I am doing is unlocking my phone, plugging it into the USB and there you go.

    Buy it ;)

  2. I think I just experienced 'the boom'. I lowered just my rear windows about 3" and my ear drums nearly got sucked out! - Not nice.

I opened up the front windows along with the rears and I stopped looking like Arnie from Total Recall while being exposed to Mars' atmosphere.

So if your getting this to a degree normally, then I can see the frustration.

  3. I was getting worried reading this thread while waiting for my Octy. But now i have the car I am glad that I don't experience this.

My ears are sensitive to bass noise and mains hum, but I can't detect anything out of the ordinary.

This is on a 1.4 estate with 16" wheels and Continental tyres no spare, but I will be fitting a spare soon.

  4. The next lot of changes coming into effect next year were announced last July. They only effect vehicles registered after 1st April 2017 though.

Basically after the first year anything apart from Zero emission vehicles will be charged at £140 unless the car's list price is over £40,000 then it's an extra £310 per year for the first 5 years.

First year charges are higher too but still based on CO2 emissions.

    See https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/vehicle-excise-duty/vehicle-excise-duty for full info.

I am hoping to take advantage of this. For example the 150BHP 1.4 TSI (post July 2015ish?) dropped a TAX band compared to the 1.4 140BHP, so having a JULY 2015 - MARCH 2017 model means (hopefully) £30 TAX instead of £140.

VAG did a good job on the emissions testing there .  No no, I am sure it is all down to the improved engineering of the 150BHP model  :D

It's all a lot nicer than paying £265 for the MK1 Octy VRS :D

  5. Well I suppose the silver lining for long term ownership is one (or 4!) less thing to go wrong.

My 7 mile commute only has one 2mile ish straight that i think it would actually activate on. So I don't think I will be losing out much.

Main thing was getting the 10 extra HP and sneaking into the lower tax bracket before the new £140 tax for most cars being introduced next year.

  6. I was replacing my original pedals for VRS pedals and noticed the rust on the lower steering ccolumn where the bar goes behind carpet and wondering if anyone else has the same.

I have seen this on other cars. It is not painted so you will get some surface corrosion. Apart from moisture on shoes/mats it is a dry area.

So don't worry, other parts of the car will have rusted through before this is an issue.

You will probably find other none painted steel brackets behind the dash.

  7. Hi,

I did not select to pay extra for a MFSW on my Octy SE, and the car is now built and waiting to be shipped.

From this and other posts, it looks like I might be able to add it afterwards when funds permit.

I will use VCDS to check if I have a Highline controller. I am not sure if all MY16's have the Highline? I added optional (normal) Cruise Control as an option, so I was hoping that might mean that a Highline controller is needed?

You can get a good value 'upgrade' pack here: http://www.cars-equipment.com/www/en/shop/multifunction-switches-buttons-6/oem-multifuntion-switches-retrofit-upgrade-for/#prettyPhoto

(although hopefully I won't need the controller, just buttons & airbag cable)

But... the buttons are not for MY16, they are for earlier cars:

So will that mean that that pressing 'Audio Source' will actually activate 'Voice Control' or will the buttons be correct?

Currently there is quite a big saving if you don't go the MY16 button route (plus more 2nd hand pre-MY16 ones are available etc etc)

    Thanks

  8. I noticed that XDS is now mentioned in the later Octavia 3 brochures. Non VRS models don't show XDS under 'safety features on the earlier brochures.

Looks like Skoda has now 'added' it on later models. I wonder if the car magazines would notice it on a road test?

I am pretty sure my Mk1 VRS had XDS as it had the optional 'ESP'brake controllerbeing a run out 2005 model.

  9. Do you currently have alloys or steels?

Main thing to check is, if you need bolts with a spherical or cone seat.

Look at your existing bolts. When you get your alloys through try placing one of the bolts into the alloy hole and see if it firmly locates.

I had to buy the other type.

Another thing to check is the length. I had to cut mine all down as they stuck out too far past the other side of the hub.

  10. Not sure if this will apply to your 10 plate but regards diagnostics, the charging system might need to know a new battery has been fitted.........something to do with internal resistance of battery and whether or not it has smart charging?

Someone can likely clarify or shoot me down in flames?!

I believe this is on cars with 'Stop Start' as it needs to know the capacity and type so it can ensure it does not take too much out the battery and it wont start etc!

  11. Sure thing mate

    http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/garage-equipment/car-battery-chargers/ring-12a-smartcharger-charge-and-diagnose

Not cheap, but it does testing, alternator, starter crank test, memory save, capacity test. 5 charging modes, Auto, Winter, maintenance, and I forget the rest  :D

BTW It was also a Halfords 10 year old charger I used initially, says it does AGM, but obviously not the newer AGM batteries.

Just to say thanks. I bought the slightly lower capacity (8amps I think) one as I am getting a 1.4 TSI and wife's Mini is 1.6 petrol.

Not tried it yet, hopefully connect the Mini up over the weekend.
