  1. I have a Superb Elegance 170CR DSG which now has +20000 miles on the clock. I have gotten 50 mpg with more narrow 16" winter tyres, but regularly with summer tyres 17" I get the advertised figure of 46 mpg.* I couldn't be happier with the combination of the 170CR with the DSG!

*Consumption figures from actual consumption, the computer is 10% off.

  2. We are talking here about the 2.0 TDI CR which in case that it has balancing shafts they are 100% located in the oil pan. Attached is a photo as a demonstration how they look like if present.

The image shows the new 105 kW (140 bhp) CR 2.0 l diesel, not the 125 kW (170 bhp) CR 2.0 l diesel which is in the Superb. The new 140 bhp CR diesels are not yet availabe for the Superb, but available for the VW Golf. Do you have a similar drawing of the 170 bhp version? That would be interesting!

  3. Normal!

Superb II doesn't have contra-balancing shafts on none of it's diesel engines.

Passat & Audi have contra-balancing shafts on it's 2.0l diesel engines so that's why people (and journalists) say that the 2.0l engine is smoother & has less vibrations in Passat & A4 than in Superb II.

I'm also surprised that Skoda did such cost saving on it's top model :thumbdwn:.

    @ core

Where do you find the information on the "contra-balancing shafts"? I thought it was the new 140 BHP CR model that had them but not the new 110 BHP CR (In the new VW Golf)?

  4. Where does it say that it kicks in at 25°C? The text at Skoda home page referring to the Superb II only say: "The sunroof with solar panels ensures ventilation of cool air even in a parked car." The text for the Superb I says: "When the engine is turned off, solar cells feed energy to the automatic air-conditioning ventilator. As a result, even after parking in the sun for a long period you will be surprised by the car’s pleasantly aerated interior. And in the winter, air circulation inside the car prevents frost from developing on the glass." Should one understand from this that there is a different design in the Superb II solar sunroof? That the earlier one operated also in winter time? I cannot find any settings in the MFD refererring to the sunroof at least. Does anybody know?

  5. The cover of the safety light in the front passenger door was slightly hit the other day and just fell off. I couldn't really get it to stick so I will have to go to the garage for this. Anyone experienced this? I suspect it might have been too loosely attached after they fixed a broken speaker in that door some time ago. I checked the other safety lights covers and they seem a bit fragile to me.

  6. That's not great figures from either of you, on the read with the mph figure an urban user would be struggling just into 30mpg with a mph of around 14mph.

If you only travel urban at an average of 14 mph you should get a bicycle... ;)

The Superb 170 DSG is advertised at 46 mpg average and 36 mpg urban. I think those figures are quite accurate. I commute on motarway 2 x 40 miles a day at (legal) 70 mph at least parts of the way. The MFD then gives 52-55 mpg. I also do urban travel since I have my old folks at the hospital, those trips gives around 35 mpg on the MFD.

I do suspect my MFD give me too nice figures though, but I cannot check that properly until I stop using the Webasto heater.

I am very happy with the power & mpg (in combination) the 170CR delivers!

  7. Actual MFD Display Average Speed Total Mileage Engine

    43,4* 49.5** 35mph*** 2500 miles CR170 DSG

    * Last brim to brim incl. Webasto diesel heater consumption.

** I have and use the external Webasto diesel heater which explain at least some of the difference, proper comparison in a few months time when I won't need to heat the car...

*** Average for the 2500 miles.

  8. Yes, I know but I suspect that since officially the Bolero only recognices up to 2Gb SD (not SDHC) cards, it might be the Bolero unit that is the culprit. But if someone has a SDHC card that resonds/works fast in their Bolero unit I would be very interested to learn which card and the amount of files on the card.

  9. I've done 750 miles so far, mostly highway and city driving. I have 49 mpg on the MFD so far and cannot calculate the proper mpg since I have the auxillary heater which consumes some diesel. But including the auxillary heater consumption my brim to brim consumption is 40 mpg, and the auxillary is on an hour a day! So I am very pleased with the figures already the first 750 miles! Weekdays I go 2 times 40 miles on the highway at legal 70 mph and some congestion traffic. At least I think the real brim to brim would be 43–44 mpg so far (thus the MFD showing +5 mpg....). But I guess it will improve as well.

  10. Where I live one needs proper winter tyres (you would need it in the UK today from what I see on the news...), so I have 16" Nokian Hakkapelitta (without spikes) 205/55 R16 94R XL on my Superb. Summer tyres are on 17" but in storage since delivery, so I do not know the brand but I suspect XL as well. If Skoda dealers equip even 16" with XL tyres it might be a request from Skoda Auto?

I find the ride much more comfortable in the Superb than in my previous Octavia.

On the Octavia I had winter tyres with spikes on 15", and it is not just the lack of the whining sound from the spikes. The Superb is more quiet than the Octy, but still I would have liked more sound proofing from the wheels (the lack of this is a trademark of VAG cars except the new Golf perhaps). Swedish roads are not particulary good and salt defrosting of the roads during winter time wear the asphalt a lot and leaves a rough surface that rumbles too much while driving upon.

I was quite happy with my Octavia but the Superb is way better (and more expensive...) overall.

  11. They didn't seem to do anything at the garage except demo the system with high volume where the effect of the Treble etc controls was obvious (which both the Skoda salesman and I had not done).

It seems as if when playing a recording which is flat by nature the controls dont have much effect; (in other words it does not artificially create bass) but when there is hidden base on the recording the controls really make it stand out (drum beats etc)

My son, who is in the sound recording trade, reckons the sound is superb, so I cant disagree with him.

OK, I realised there was nothing happening since I hade previously chosen "vocal", other settings made the sound better, but I think it is something lacking still with my system. Too "thin" output, I will check with my garage eventually.

  12. Since I can't make up my mind weither to get a Superb or an A6, I would love to hear the verdict on those two (Don't think I can find the magazine here in Sweden)

    Yes you can! © Obama.

You can find copies of that issue right now at Pressbyran (the bigger ones) in Sweden. Or order it online from Press Stop:

Tidningar frn hela Sverige och vrlden hittar du i Press Stops tidningsbutik.

    And go for the Superb!

  13. Thanks for the input JonA!

I thought that I could programme it for the whole week in advance, but I suspect that that might pose a safety issue if it would be left too long. I will just have to activate the next time (afternoon or next morning) before leaving the car, i.e. just change the day in the settings since the times are the same. This is so much easier with the Superb since access to the settings is from the steering wheel! I used to use an electric heater on my previous car, so I have to learn anew.

  14. I understand that the auxillary heater might not be needed/available in Britain, but I ask anyway if someone might know how to set the programmed times for the heater? I would like it to switch on Monday-Friday in the morning as well as in the late afternoon for my commuting to and from work, but the manual is vague on this. I might stick with the remote operation, but it would be nice to have the work day shedule warmed up. Anyone that knows and that can walk me through?

  15. After 60 miles, the Superb is now parked and I must say that I have truly enjoyed the first day with the new car. The AFS is magnificent here in dark Sweden and I could continue for long... Also have gotten a lot of positive attention from neighbours (die hard Audi bunch) as well as from wife, mother and daughter. I liked the Octy but this is something else, much more refined, much more car overall. :D

  17. In my Octy I think I have to press the set and number button at the same time, thereafter I have to press the unlock button on the key within 10 s for it to be paired with the memory setting. I might remember it the wrong way, but I remember that the manual was wrong in this respect for the Octy so it might be a long honoured Skoda tradition...?
