  1. Thanks for the replies, sorry but the delay in getting back sooner. Since Sunday evening I been admitted to hospital for tests pending a heart transplant. So its been a stressful few days. I decided to go down the insurance route as I unable to get out to obtain the quotes I needed. For myself it's easier to let the insurance company deal with it and my missus has been back in touch with the police saying we ain't interested in getting her parents to pay for it, as she has enough on her plate to deal with, so they are going to issue a TOR document to the owner

Thanks for your replies and advice, but due to the current situation I have to put my welfare first, rather than trying to make things easier for her. Hopefully she will learn from this

    Thanks Richard

  2. Evening all. Just after some advice on my situation.

On Friday, went to our local supermarket and whilst at the till, we get the dreaded customer service announcement, can the owner of car registration xxx please report to customer service. Upon arrival, I found a man and his daughter there saying they witness a young girl reverse into my car, got out examined my car and hers and just drove off. They took photos of her car etc.

Rear drivers wing dented in and bare metal exposed and rear bumper damaged as well. Trolley attendant called security and they caught it clearly on cctv.

I went to the police station to report it and due to change of shift, I said I call back in the morning., and perhaps she would have the decency to attend the police station and report it.

Next morning I give my details, witness details and cctv available from the supermarket. They will make enquiries and get back to me.

Phone call this afternoon with her details , to say they visited the driver and she's all apologetic and her father wants to know that he is willing to pay cash as she only past her test a week ago. The officer is saying more or less to go down that route rather than go through her insurance.

Be honest I was quite shocked by her comments, so I say she basically gets off a serious traffic offence without any form of legal punishment as bank of mum and dad will bail her out, but i have been done in the past for going over the speed limit slightly and get points and fine, which I accepted.

I told the officer I will think about yet and I inconvenience myself to go to the dealer to get costs of repairs, cist of hiring another car, cancelling my tag for the Severn bridge as I work in Bristol, just so she doesn't get any further upset.

So just looking to know if anyone has been in the situation similar where money has been offered to repair the damage rather than go through the insurance.

    Thanks

    Richard

  3. Not everyone has the luxury of a 9 to 5 Monday to Friday job. Members of the armed forces, emergency services, utility services don't have that luxury of being able to choose to go on holiday during school holidays. I had to cancel my holidays whilst in the army due being deployed to the middle east and alot of my friends had all leave cancelled in the summer of 94 in order to be deployed to Rwanda at the end of July for 4 months, so they have to take holidays that works around their posts and deployment

  4. I'm looking at house alarms and wondering if to get a wired or wireless system.

The wireless systems claim either 2-3 years battery or 5 years.

The company supplying the 2-3 years system suggests changing them every year and the 5 year people change them every 4 years as part of the maintainance.

Oddly most of the wireless systems seem to be entirely bettery powered with not mains feed.

The other thing that concerns me a little, is the 128bit WLS (Wireless security system) seems a bit like WEP, so cracking it might be an issue.

Does anyone have any experience with these things, as I'm certainly not looking for a system I can control by a web interface and just want something reliable that can have a mix of PIR and door sensors etc.

Also I've had conflicting advice on the wired sensors, some saying you should install them facing away from the windows, to create a perimeter and avoid false alarms.

The others saying you should install them facing the main points of access and correctly adjust the sensors so they are not detecting outdoors.

Any advice greatly appreciated, particularly if you have an alarm and can comment on the sensor locations.

I've installed wireless systems throughout nearly 200 substations and they been in there for 7 years now, with out any major issues. Any problems tend to be user than equipment issues. We used the infinite prime panels from Electronic lines with GSM alerts and ability to arm/disarm via text and to dial in and listen. Battery life really depends on the activity. Quiet sites batteries can last a few years, but active sites under construction, batteries can go quick, especially the main door. We did a 6 monthly test of the system and changed batteries yearly due to the nature of the sites. I have one in the house and shed with out any issues.

PIR I would get pet immune ones and I always point away from Windows due to sun light and people walking past. You can add smoke detectors, flood detectors, home automation units.

They have now got panels which uses apple or Android apps to control, new pirs which takes photos as well onto a internal sd card.

Overall it's proved to very reliable and used them in strange locations, even up a pole in a cabinet in a compound with external pirs

  5. I assume your contract doesn't have clauses about working for clients of your employer for a certain period? Most these days do.

Nothing in our contract regarding working for our clients. In fact we take on some their employees as part time consultants when they retire, to help out with schemes. I think he be more angry if anyone went to work with a direct competitor

  6. Well I seen the boss this morning and went quite well. I explained I was went for a vacancy with our client, and was offered the job verbally pending the outcome of the medicals and they have confirmed the position and start date of the 10th. He said He fully understands why I went for the role, as it's basically what I do now and it's a great package. He was going to increase my hours, but he has admitted that he can't guarantee what the work situation would be in a few years time. He admitted he would miss me as I been with him 11 years now but he knows that somewhere along the line, we will work together again and I will actively promote the company to my new managers. I thanked him for his help and support over the years. He's going to arrange to settle up any outstanding hours and holidays, and my bonus for the 7 months of the year. As we shook hands, he said to have a think where I want to go for a meal and a few drinks with the lads before I go, so glad it's ended on a good note. Thanks for the advice

  7. Thanks for all your replies and advice. Had a phone call from the client today and they want me to start on the 10 August as they want the current electrician to do a handover before he moves on to his new role. So I've arranged to meet my current boss tomorrow morning at our office and do it face to face and to thank him for his and others support over the last 11 years. We will probably still bump into each other due to how close both companies work together. Will keep you all updated tomorrow

  8. Technically you're bound by what it says in your contract. If there is nothing in your contract, the statutory period you have to work is one week. In reality you could just walk out and it's unlikely your employer would be motivated to do anything. I get the impression that wouldn't be your style though - good :)

What you need to do is negotiate with your boss. If you're moving over to your main client, I imagine that might determine his/her attitude to your notice period as it would be a good idea to keep the client sweet. My advice is to be honest and play it straight down the middle. That way at least you'll maintain the respect of both parties.

I made a lot of good friends over the years, so I don't want to ruin those relationships as they may potentially could be a future manager or I might look at roles in their areas.

Regarding my boss, I can't honestly see him causing any issues, as he could jeopardise any on going works or future schemes for his company, but he might not be happy as I've been with him 11 years. He was a bit funny at first with a couple of our fellow employees who went to work for the main client, but over the years they have pro actively promoted our company with the client, so he's actually gained work and I hopefully be in a position to do the same at some stage.

  9. Morning all. Well yesterday evening, I finally got the news that I been waiting for nearly 2 weeks. I was offered a job with our main client on the 17th July, pending a satisfactory medical last week. Medically I passed it as fit, but due to declaring my heart condition and medication, I had to see a doctor, just for further details and she declared me fit without restrictions for the vacancy, so the agency has been made aware and have started the ball rolling.

Now on my form I did state I have to give a months notice, but the agency said the client is keen for me to start asp.

As I was off on long term sick from last July to end of March, I've return to work on a temporary part time contract of 2 days per week, but at times I've worked more days as per work requirements and it doesn't state any notice period whatsoever? I'm looking at giving a minimum of a week's notice and looking at starting on the 10th August. That gives me 7 working days to clear my current work load rather than dump my boss in the crap with our main client and to sort out any admin with the client

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Richard

  10. ****e yeah, forgot that. Stena decided it was longer economically viable.. moved operations down to dublin.. if going to wexford dublin or rosslare is irrelevent, distance difference isnt much really compared to travel reqd your side, rosslare is closer but roads from dublin are fine. Just may want to check on eflow website re the m50 toll paymebt. Its barrier free, by anpr, byt i dunno if it picks up and can charge uk plates.. 3.10 by 2000hrs day following travel or a penalty notice for double being issued...

They do serve a penalty notice as last year I forgot about the 2 times I used the M50, about 6 weeks later a penalty notice arrives here in wales and was totally shocked by what I had to pay- a grand total of just over £10

  11. Does anyone use this service, looking for advice on bookings, times, how to get the best price available. Options are Fishguard to Rosslare, Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire.

Where in the UK are you to? I live in Pontypool and I use Pembroke to rosslare all the time to travel back to Derry . I did look at Fishguard but the timings and costs are roughly the same but would take longer to get to Fishguard from my place. I did do the seacat crossing from Dublin to holyhead one year, and I rather have the mother of all hangovers for eternity, than do that crossing again, plus the drive down from holyhead to south Wales was a complete nightmare.

The departures from rosslare or Pembroke are around 2.30am or 2.30pm,so will get in around 7am/7pm or later depending on delays, weather issues, etc. So if you are travelling further a field than Dublin, you have to consider your travel time in Ireland as well. I usually leave at 11.30 pm and I can be in derry for 1 ish. Also they waz constructing a new motorway arklow to wicklow last year and they wasn't hanging about

  12. I guess you could do the work and then get it inspected and certified afterwards.

Having had to tidy up the hopeless wiring installed by 'certified electricians' in the past, I wouldn't particularly rely on the quality of work carried out by so called professionals.

I'm not sure replacement of existing ceiling fittings would strictly come under building regs, but then I'm not certified (certifiable, maybe!)

Fortunately, we have a sufficiently recent electrical safety cert. to cover most recent work I've done.

It's a grey area with special locations. You are allowed to replace an electrical item or replace a section of damaged circuit like for like, but under the regs, you aren't allowed to extend a circuit or alter a circuit. Some contractors say as a bathroom or kitchen is a special location, then you can't change anything, which IMHO is rubbish, what's the difference between changing a switch or a socket outlet in a hallway than in a kitchen. I tend not to any jobs as favours for people now, except for immediate family and close friends, as trying to explain them why they can't have that is hard going, especially when they say well my neighbour /friend has it, I'm not happy to cut corners to install something potentially dangerous

  13. As vindaloo mentioned earlier, I personally go for the fire rated and acoustic rated with gu10 led lamps. I've used aurora fittings you can lay insulation directly over the fitting, regardless of led or mains voltage lamps. I would avoid those screw fix fittings as you will be required to leave a space clear around them, to avoid anything coming in touch with the lamp, not such a issue with leds, but with mains halogen lamps. Are your lighting circuits covered by a RCD, as a bathroom is a special location and all circuits are required to be protected by an RCD, but regs are constantly being amended and our boss hasn't bothered to send us on any amendment courses, so I and others don't do any inspection and testing anymore until he gets us up to date.

Hopefully the link might be of help

  14. You need to contact your local electric board (DNO). Tell them you have a safety concern regarding a connection on your premises. They should send out a fault team to investigate. Looking at the pic and from what I can see, that will fall under ESQCR 2002 and that would be highlighted as a risk. The risk itself is a CSJM ( Clearance Service Joint Medium) that should have been made off into a small joint box approx 6"x6" and filled with a jointing compound to totally seal it and looks alot tidier and can be painted over. We Do alot off services in our area and there's no way we would sign that off. I've sent teams back to make good after customer complaints

  15. Thank you for your replies. I want to raise the boot floor so that I can fit a large dog cage. The strength of the floor is an important factor. Do you think that the thinner replacement floor that comes with the Spare Wheel will be as strong as the Variable Boot Floor. I don't need the storage underneath the floor and I wouldn't be able to access it anyway! JanetR

I got the spare wheel set up and I had a pull along tool box and power tools in the back without problems on a regular basis. I have 5 x 25kg bags of anthracite in the back without any issues. Being level as well helps with loading and unloading the tool box

  16. One thing to make sure of, is that the electrical work is certified, as a bathroom is defined as a "special location" as there are restrictions on what work can't and can be done in these areas by non certified people.

The IP rated led down lighters, do they have removal GU10 led lamps? I only ask as we have came across where, someone has fitted down lighters onto pvc cladding and at some time, someone fitted halogen lamps and the heat has melted the cladding. We list this risk on any periodic reports, even if led lamps are used, just purely to protect myself and the company.

  17. Thanks for all the reply. went with a status update, tagging everyone, thanking people who have paid but also a reminder for those who haven't paid, to settle up by end of play on Friday, otherwise they will lose their allocation and tickets will be allocated to other interested people. If payment is an issue, please get in touch with me, rather than ignoring the message

    Thanks for the replies

  18. Send them a polite reminder that the deadline for payment is here and you'd be grateful for the payment. If possible send it to everyone in your group so as not to pick out individuals. Something along the lines of:

'I would be very grateful for the payment of the tickets and hotel which are now in my possession, please ignore this message if you have already paid me. Looking forward to a great game at Twickenham with you all'.

Hopefully this way it might just nudge them in to paying but not annoy anyone in particular as it's gone to everyone in the group. This saves face to face or 'uncomfortable' moments.

See you at Twickenham, I'll be there a few times over the next couple of months, not forgetting the 2015 World Cup later in the year.

That's what I thinking of doing, a group message rather than individuals. It's hard to judge what to do without upsetting somebody. so you going to be at the army navy as well then?

  19. Send them a message stating that payment deadline is today, and if not paid by Wednesday then you'll have to shift them to someone else. The end.

Your health situation is nothing to do with this so don't even bring that up as an issue, it's to do with them not paying for something they agreed to. Not belittling your health issues at all, but it's not relevant here.

I know what you mean by health issue, but as its affecting my income at the moment and my statutory sick pay now ends, I not going down the route of signing on for a few weeks, and they known all this from day one. Just feel it shouldn't have got to this stage with them
