  1. Fuel prices are good, diesel is alot cheaper currently £1.16 a litre, tends to get better closer to border areas. Food prices are on a par with UK,as long as you avoid the bigger towns. One thing for certain, take some UK sterling as alot of places will do better deals on purchases in stores, restaurants etc if you pay in UK sterling. I travel back a few times, but mostly spend it around Tyrone,Donegal,Derry in the north west. I usually catch the Pembroke to rosslare crossing. Did the Dublin to holyhead crossing in the seacat. Never again, how I never spewed is a miracle. Rather have the mother of all hangovers. Roads are pretty good compared to the UK. Most of the A roads have a hard shoulder, and if you approach a slower vehicle, don't be alarmed if they start pulling over or straddling the hard shoulder, they just trying to create a bit of space for you to get pass safer. I personally rather drive up through Ireland to the north west rather drive from south Wales up to cairnryan as it's more relaxing and cheaper to fill up as well. Enjoy your time

  2. Richard,

If your existing wingbars are 127cm they will project over the cars roof rals rooflong and you will need the thule 775 foot pack. This is the one with the rubber tensioning band that wraps around the roof rails. I recently bought some off e-bay. They tend to go for about £55 in as new condition.

    Colin

I seen them but how solid is the strap? I be a bit concerned if it can be just cut off quite easily.someone posted this link elsewhere and seems good for the price.

  3. Well finally took delivery bog the yeti this evening. As I'm unable to drive until the 29th,Paul the sales rep from Capitol Skoda, personally delivered the yeti to me at my house on his way home and did the handover in my kitchen.

Well so far Im quite impressed with it. Just sat in it and set things up and went through the manual. Missus is well impressed with it as she finds the driving position alot better than the mk3 Leon sc we just parted ex. Will get some pics up soon as weather is crap here at the moment

  4. Just ordered a replacement panel from supeskoda for about £20 and it's costing £45 to get it finished by aquagraphix.

They are just up the road from me, so I probably take the trims off and drop them off when I'm working up at pengam
  5. Yes they came from skodaparts.com - £103.07 inc delivery.

Would have been about £10 cheaper if I'd gone for the standard silver finish, but I wanted the new brushed-aluminium finish which I think makes it look slightly classier. It's still plastic but looks like a decent metal finish.

    f9jha9.jpg

How easy was it to remove the trims?

  6. Generally interesting - Can you be deemed to have "refused access" if you're single, work, and the meter reader always calls whilst you're at work?

no because you was not in at the time of vist, so therefore no one was present to let them carry out a check. I also write on my sheets "access card left" on such a date and time. Usually we are given an area to cover and % amount to check as we understand that people are out. I have had it all the time over the last year, carrying out safety checks on the over head services, which is requested by the regulator. People have refused me access to check any poles, flights, service cables on their properties. Not a problem,as I still get paid, make a note on the mapping and on the hand held and move on. Office then gets in touch with the person via letter explaining why safety checks are carried out. One household was going to request her meter to be moved externally to a cabinet. Told her as she was going to request the work, she have to pay for it, but as I picked up safety issues and clearance issues,it would be brought up to current regs for free. So she saved herself several hundred pound by letting me check the service.

What annoys me a minority of the public treat people without any respect and are quite abusive about it and shouting you are not coming on to my property etc. That's their right, but if that service fails then they can't claim as they refused a reasonable request for us to carry out safety checks on that service. All we trying to do is ensure that people have continuity of supply, and if there is a issue,we can address it at a time that is CONVENIENT to the customer and not at a time when it isn't ie Xmas

  7. Most commercial premises are on half hourly meters which send the actual readings every half hour,so provides very accurate readings. As for tamper switches, when we eventually swap to smart meters, they are looking at a standardized meter set up throughout the UK. Some of the requirements by DNOs and suppliers are that the new meters, should have the facility that when a meter is open,it alerts the supplier, if the power fails due to fuse going or being removed in the cut out,it alerts the supplier or the DNO. Also theres been requests from the electrical bodies in the UK that a mechanical isolation switch be incorporated as well,to aid electricians to carry out fuse box renewals without having to break the seal.

  8. Not my problem.

I've already paid for 90 days i.e. a quarter, and its a quarterly bill that I pay.

If they can't get their admin **** together and:-

1). Advise me by e-mail to let the meter reader do the reading, and

    2) to get the meter reader round my house within the a reasonable margin of the end of the quarter (Lets say + or - 2% (2days)),

then for £30 worth they can go whistle.

    Inefficient bumbling privatised bureaucracy.

    Nick

Well it is your problem and my problem and everyone else's problem who pays . If meter readers can't get in to read meters and also check for interference with the meters, guess who pays for that? Us. The lost revenue is passed onto us,the people who pay. As you now refused entry to a meter reader, you are now flagged for further visits in the near future. We had several people, who have refused several reasonable attempts to read meters, so the supplier have them disconnected and they don't enter the property to do so. I've disconnected houses via the flights on the pole on the highway.

  9. The electricity company are obliged to read the meter once every 2 years. Last summer I submitted an online reading 2 weeks before my bill, but then a week later they popped round and read the meter again. The check primarily a safety one, but they also check the reading to make sure you are submitting valid readings.

and also illegal supplies/tampering of meters. I've reported several over the last couple of years during routine safety checks identifying old metal cut outs and fabric insulated tails in premises
  10. Staying in Betws y Coed from Friday till Sunday. Biking the Marin triail there on Friday afternoon and then onto Coed y Brenin for a full days cycling on Saturday. Sunday morning the plan is to hike up Snowdon if the weather's suitable before heading to the ferry on Sunday evening. Can't wait!

Enjoy your time in north Wales. Spent a summer up there in the 90s at capel curig with the army. Loved the place and did some mtb when we had any time off.

There's a few good mtb sites in south Wales which my mate in Bristol comes over to all the time. Afan valley near port Talbot, bike park Wales up in Merthyr Tydfil and cwmcarn forest. That's a good price on those bars.

  11. Thanks all. Probably another reason why I went for the yeti over a Octavia was the seating flexibility. I'm currently looking into a electric mountain bike to give me a boost if I need it and it means I can do further mileage to help with the fitness. I do have a set of Thule wingbars I had for the Octavia,so can use them as well, just got to get the roof bar adapters.

My missus is laughing now as it be her you gets to play with it first. So I be like a spoilt kid who had all his toys taken off him. April 29 can't come quick enough. I'm booked in to a few sites in Brecon and llandridnod wells so will be taking it up there and I'm off to Twickenham for the Army Navy weekend over the bank holiday weekend,so can get the engine broken in quickly.

  12. Just had a nice call to say the car will be ready for picking up tomorrow!!!!!!!!!:rock::happy::dance:  B):D:party::thumbup:

Can't wait to see the pics. I've just ordered a yeti outdoor elegance 2.0 diesel 4x4 dsg in the same colour. Pick it up next week. Not many pics of it in black. Only difference is I have the anapurna alloys but should look good with the silver wing mirrors and front and rear protection panels

  13. Well due to a recent health issue,I had to get rid of my seat Leon fr. 1.4tsi manual with tech pack and has been a joy to drive and I loved the car. However I'm currently unable to drive until the end of April,so the missus is now the main driver and she just can't get on with the manual. She admitted that she really preferred the Octavia vrs dsg we had and due to the fact of my health, and if I have another episode,I can't drive for 6 months. A work colleague brought his yeti dsg over so the missus could try it and she loves, especially the driving position.

Spoke to my local dealer and explained the situation.Fair play to the salesman, he did a few prices for me and got back to me within a couple of hours. As there wasn't any factory ready dsg models available, he said they had a few new demo models and as I been a loyal customer,he said I could have one of the dsg yeti which are about to registered as demos. Happy with the costs, so placed the order for a Yeti elegance 2.0 diesel 140 4x4 dsg in metallic black. Only extra is the spare wheel. I could have it by Saturday, but unfortunately I have overtime on Saturday, so rather than rush prepping the car, I pick it up next week.

The colour not my 1st choice, but need a dsg car rather quick so I can live with that. So looking forward to it. Out of curiosity, has anyone got the internal bike carrier for the yeti?

Thanks for any advice or tips.

    Cheers Richard

  14. Any links to the model you are looking at? Should be some sort of technical info on it regarding wattage and installation? As macdemon has said, you aren't altering or extending an installation. My 4 zone induction hob is wired to 6mm t&e and i never had 4 on at once.

  15. Good to see you being upbeat about it. It's still early days and it takes a few months to get the tablets to the correct doseage. I'm currently on carvelidol, ramapril, twice a day and a statin in the evening. When I came out of hospital,I had trouble walking up to the end of our street, but still had to keep up a small exercise regime. Have you been referred to a local cardiac nurse? She was my first point of contact and did all my meds, etc. I'm not sure if you got anything similar in your area, but here in my borough in Wales, they did a 10 week cardiac rehab course, which I thoroughly recommend. It was 2 hours twice a week. They start you off by recording a fitness level and over the course, you do 2 min stints of various exercises, which if you felt exhausted, you stop at anytime.

It feel embarrassing being lapped by a pensioner but it proves it works. You retake the fitness test at the end and you be surprised the difference it makes.

I've cut down on the crap I used to eat. It's everything in moderation. I have a cooked breakfast now and again, meat I buy quality from local farm shops and butchers rather than bland tasteless muck from the supermarket. I was never a big drinker, but if I do have a drink, usually share a bottle of wine with the missus on a Saturday night. If I go out for a meal I usually have a couple pints of real ale. It's not really the alcohol content we got to watch, but the amount of fluids we drink with dilated cardiomyopathy. I be worse off drinking coke, etc all night than one or two pints over the night due to the possibility of fluid retention. If we have a family get together, wedding etc,I usually take a water tablet on the day and the next day to make sure I'm not retaining fluids.

I still lead a normal life,do my job etc,but I have to know my limits. My icd did fire in October, but I didn't know until my check up 10 days ago. My aunt is a heart nurse and she got the condition as well and she goes traveling all over the world, helps out on the farm and she's 55,so she my inspiration. She has told me you are constantly monitored for the rest of you life and the end of the day, your heart is a muscle which they can treat and each year the technology progresses.

As long as you are chatting on here, remain upbeat and realize that you can have a normal life, just things easy at first, find your feet, you be be grand. My missus thought it was funny to buy me a set of ironman boxer shorts and the ironman DVD.

    All the best.

    Richard

  16. Thanks for the replies. I'm taking things alot easier now. Things have been changed around at work now and the blokes have been taking the Mickey. Collected my new ppe last Monday and the safety officer handed me a car battery booster pack as a joke. The boss attitude has completely gone full circle and it's back to how things was before our working relationship deteriorated. I've always been of the mentality,if things get tough,it's heads down and soldier on,but a old army mate called in yesterday and said we now in our 40s not some young 18 in the army. So I'm taking a step back in the work and it's now time for the youngsters to step up and run the jobs,I'm just going to be there to guide and advise them. If I wasn't there ,then they have to do the job anyway on their own.

The icd pacemaker is a marvelous piece of kit and certainly owe my life to it. I know what triggered it, so I'm not going to get myself in that situation again.

It's nice been driven around in work but bit frustrating when I get home and having to rely on the missus for a lift. Only downside is,she just can't get on with the manual and been a few times she stalled the car and she gets a bit flustered. So I'm now looking at going back to a dsg equipped car, just to make things easier for her as she more worried about me.

Thanks again for the get well wishes.

    Richard

  17. All the best Lee. Welcome to the club,I was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy back in 2010 when I was 37 and resulted in a icd pacemaker being implanted in February 2011. Plenty of information out there from British heart foundation and other organizations. Usually it's inherited from one of your parents. With a few lifestyle changes, you can lead a normal life. I'm still doing my job as a spark. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions if you don't want to discuss on the forum. All the best. Richard

  18. Morning all. Had heart issues in july 2010 which resulted in having a ICD implanted in me in February 2011. All going well since then. Went for my latest check up yesterday and usually takes 15 mins max. Half way through the check up,they asked me if I had a episode on the 29 October, I said not sure as I need to consult my diary. It turns out my icd had fire and give me a full defib due to my heart getting close to a dangerous arrhythmia. I said I didn't feel a thing or passed out. Only time I was light headed and blurry vision was in September, but I was unwell and I skipped breakfast that day. Blood tests all ok and turn out I required glasses as well. So they continue to do the checks and no reoccurring incidents since then. I went immediately to see the arrhythmia specialist and she explained the situation. The icd wasn't set up correctly for monitoring which does fast pacing in order to correct a arrhythmia, which if that fails it goes into full defib. On that day it went straight into full defib. So they made a few alterations to the settings and might have been set bit too low as well. Even if it was enabled, they can't assume it would have prevented it going full defib. I have a follow up in 12 weeks time.

As the device had fired,I'm not to drive for 6 months now,but luckily for me it happened shortly after last check up and yesterday appointment was delayed for a month. So it's from the date of the episode which means I can't drive until the 29th April. She reassured me it's not dvla notified as it falls into a certain category. As I drove down there,I had to phone the office to get someone to pick me up as I was in the works van.

As for the day of the episode,i checked my diary and I had to visit a substation by a mast in Newbridge,Gwent. Was a long gradual lane and barriers was closed,so I walked up and I got a bit breathless,so I stopped for 10 mins, caught my breath and carried on. At no.point did I pass out or felt a shock.

So sat here waiting to be picked up for work and been racking my brains all night. My missus has been freaked out by it. Boss has been good about it,considering our past issues over the last 2 years. He swapped things about so now going to be part of a team, rather than, lone working now

Just got to get used to it the thought of not being able to take things for granted regarding driving. Missus is dreading having to drive, as she doesn't do a great deal of driving. We was going back to northern Ireland over Easter, but I reschedule my ferry crossing for another time.

  19. Profile of a double glazed unit is thickness of glass plus gap plus thickness of glass,so a 4+10+4 profile is 4mm glass plus a gap of 10 plus 4mm glass which will give you a overall thickness of 18mm

  20. 16 could be overall thickness of the glazed unit. Could be 3+10+3 profile or a 4+8+4 profile. You can pop the pvc window beading, done it many times with the house windows rather than struggle getting furniture through door door ways etc

  21. I'd have they have enough equipment to catch MLM- CCTV cameras. A camera per gantry over a set distance. Vehicle appears in same lame on all cameras - guilty. Add a few signs ="covert lane hogging cameras operating" and get some well publicised cases and MLM might decide to move over.

But you still get done if you didn't hog the middle lane. You in lane 1 as you approach the 1st gantry and pull out to overtake slower vehicle and pull in after passing it and remain in lane 1. Repeat the same process at the 2nd gantry and you will be done then as the your car isn't monitored between gantrys. Taking a still photo at 2 different locations, won't determine what that vehicle was doing between each location
