  1. Can't help you with the dog guard other to recommend having a look at Lintran dog crates. We have one in our Superb, and being solid other than mesh doors an a mesh panel at the front of the crate,it helps protect the whole interior of the car. We have 3 Springer Spaniel mud magnets that travel in there

     

    Our car is nearly 5 years old now, and when I take the crate out of the car it is still like new in the boot.

     

    Learned that lesson the hard way - our previous Superb was only 3 hours old when  one of our old springers left a nice ring of fox poo around the boot of the car after an unseen rolling session and subsequent shake in the boot!!

    This popped up on my car yesterday morning, and hasn't gone after well over 250 miles of driving.  Phoned dealer and is booked in next Tuesday, bit nervous about driving with it on but they said only issue is if the light goes red and limp mode may come on, so watch out for sudden lack of power.  Someone I spoke to had an Audi with this and it was a failed glowplug.

     

    Hope it will be OK to drive still - I've got a circa 150 odd mile journey tomorrow and could do without it dumping me on the side of the road miles from home!

     

    Car is 4 years 8 months old, 1.6TDi 120PS with 131,600 odd miles on it, never had this before but with lockdown I've been doing less drives (but those I have done are often longish).  Company car so not hurting my wallet (thankfully) but just hoping it will keep going till the end of the month when the new car should arrive - think it must have heard it's being replaced!! :D

     

    Had the self same light come on on mine - took it to my local independent VAG specialist and sure enough it was a glow plug that had gone - all done for just over £100

    You can get non-switchable versions of the pump.  So maybe some models use them and some don't, although I'd be surprised by that.

     

    I think the switchable pump is just over £100 - so if you got the job done for £350 (inc VAT?) that seems very good going.   But then I always seem to end up paying top whack!

     

    The mechanic did mention that hey are a 'variable' pump fitted, which only starts to operate once the coolant gets up to a certain temperature, which would fit in with this.

     

    I do think I have found a very reasonable and more importantly trustworthy place to have my car done though - just this week had a diagnostics and glow plug replaced for £107!

  4. The circle of thick wire is for removing the cover for the rear lights at the side of the boot opening, and the torx screwdriver is for removing the rear lights for bulb replacement. The cover has to be removed to access 2 torx screws. The screwdriver is also used for removing the front fog lights to replace the bulbs in there too!!

    This is just the beginning as the car has too many gimmicks on the basis of 'cos we can' rather than because it is needed.  If there was a Superb (or any other competent similar car)  without any of the gizmos I would have bought it, but we are stuck with an electronic nightmare.    

    As an aside, Clarkson's Sunday Times column this week end was quite amusing in that he was ranting at all the nerd advice relating to the tech to be included in his new house, as he says, he is fully capable of turning the heating on and off manually and doesn't need a potentially suspect electronic gizmo that needs a cocktail stick to press the buttons!!  So where are his principles in relation to the electronic junk that now plagues modern motoring brought in by the farhtocrats in Brussels?   

     

    I'm sure there's an option to turn the driver alert off in one of the the Multi Function display menus. I must have a relaxed driving style as well as I was getting the message pretty regularly, but turned the alert off.  Mine is a 2016 Superb though - so the menu may have changed.  

  6. Be careful - the car detailing can become addictive!!

     

    I have never had the Lifeshine applied to any of my cars.  A decent washing regime (pre wash with snow foam, wash with a good wash mitt using the 2 bucket method, and dry with a microfibre towel), will keep your car looking tip top. A decontamination (tar and fall out), polish and wax every few months too.

     

    So many products to try - I have had good results with products from the old favourites like Auto Glym,  Chemical Guys, Dodo Juice, Valet Pro and Auto Smart.

  7. Had an issue recently with work identified as needed by the dealer on my company Ford Focus - 'new front disks and pads required sir'. They put the work through to the lease company, who authorised the work. When I picked the car up, I collected the paperwork, which said the brakes had been replaced, and went to the car and checked it over - still the old disks on. Went back in and had a word with the receptionist, whose computer said the work had been done. When she checked with the technician he confirmed the work hadn't been done, and she then told me it had been an 'oversight' on their point. Needless to say I won't be going back there for the next service.

    Maybe rattle is the wrong word - I think the noise comes from 2 plastic surfaces that are clipped together tightly squeaking as the rub against each other. The silicon spray lubricates the plastic stopping the rubbing/squeaking noise 

  9. Do you tow a caravan or heavy trailer by any chance?

     

    I had a similar - but not as severe - wear pattern on my rear tyres. Could only see it once the wheels were off the car, but the tyres had a distinctive 'groove' in them.

     

    On recommendation from the tyre fitter, I took the car to a local VAG independent specialist for wheel alignment. Once he had the alignment rig on the car, he found that the alignment was spot on, but did ask if I towed a caravan.

     

    He told me that it is something in the VAG suspension geometry when towing that causes the wear that I had - I regularly tow a 1550kg caravan.

     

    I still got 26k out of the front Pirellis and 32k out of the rears, on a 190 BHP 4x4 estate.

    The route I use to the Shell garage has one section of really badly filled pot holes, where it usually creaked like hell. Tonight I went to fill up (it cost me NINETY POUNDS!) it creaked just a tiny bit over the worst part, and I can now hear something rattling gently within the dashboard but it's much more tolerable :)

     

    I'll still mention it when it goes into the dealers on Friday due to this other rattle but at least now I can enjoy my car some more.

    I've stored the silicone spray and a cloth under my boot floor so I'm armed with the stuff should another one appear! :tongueout:

     

    Glad to have helped!! Hope you get more joy at the dealers than I did originally.

    Yes! This is the exact same issue I have! Yes it's worse in the left corner but also creaks if you press the clear plastic 'glass' or press down on the dashboard hump from above.

     

    Do you know what sort of spray you used? I'll get some and try it :) 

    It was just silicone spray by WD40 -  picked it up from Halfords

     

    It has the built in straw applicator, just used that to spray around all the seams around the cluster

My car is booked in this Friday to investigate a number of rattles and this is the most annoying! That whole instrument cluster seems to be the cheapest part of the car and rattles non-stop :(

     

    Might get hold of some silicone spray if that helps then :D

    Thats the one!! It was more of a creak than a rattle, and by playing around I could replicate the sound by pressing on black the plastic surround - particularly in the bottom left had corner

  13. I had an annoying rattle/creak from the area around the instrument binnacle. Mentioned it to dealer when I took it in for something else to be looked at. Got the old 'we have packed out what we can and it has now gone' answer. 5 minutes up the road and it was back. When I got home I got the tin of silicone spray out and sprayed it between the dash and binnacle. No more noise since!!!
