  1. Depends if it's the KKK turbo, I wouldn't bother getting it upgraded as they are not the best quality.

Try and find a PD130/150 Garrett turbo and get that hybridised. It's not cheap though, you have to think about all the other supporting mods to go along with the hybrid turbo such as FMIC, flywheel, clutch, mapping. If not then try and get a standard PD130 Garrett turbo and don't bother with original KKK rubbish.

  2. Right, bit of an update:

The more I drive it the more small problems I find, which is the whole reason I bought this car, I love a challenge.

The front engine hydro mount is totally kaput, I wasn't sure on whether to upgrade to a solid mount to ensure this doesn't happen again but a friend has a brand new hydro mount (basically a mount with an oil filled shock inside) for £20, literally a five minute job of replacing that when I have it.

Next was an intermittent starting issue: The KR 16v engine has a fuel accumulator which holds fuel pressure constant in the fuel lines to enable a quick start. I presumed this as faulty so had a look under the car to find it had been bodged with around 20 cable ties. At the same time I noticed the rubber fuel lines that connect the fuel pump to the main feed lines were badly perished and one had started to split. Definitely not a good thing if they start leaking petrol under your car next to a hot exhaust

I had some spare fuel hose so changed them whilst fixing the accumulator into place without the aid of cable ties! Changed the fuel filter whilst I was there too.

This is a fuel pump unit complete with fuel filter and accumulator:

I have two major problems that have now been bumped up the priority list:

One of my wheels is buckled/out of balance.

Rear passenger coilover has popped a seal therefore no damping at all.

  3. Hi Guys,

Due to my commute being cut to a 2 minute drive, I saw no need for the fuel economy of the Vrs anymore and wanted something to work on as an ongoing project. I sold the Fabia and started the hunt for something a bit more old school, I wanted to stay in the VAG family as I've always had them. Parts are always easily available and they're not exactly over complicated, especially older cars.

I decided on a mk2 Golf as parts are cheap and depreciation seems to have curbed on them which is always good. :D

I initially saw a black MK2 which looked great but was like a sieve underneath, I could see why he wanted rid of it before the MOT was due. I then came across a mk2 16v in Oak Green that was fairly local to me, it was advertised as having a fault with fuelling. After a thorough check and some negotiating I came away with a car as well as a boot full of spares.

After ploughing all the gravel up the drive I gave it a thorough look over and made a detailed list of what needs doing, it's a bit excessive as you can see:

When searching through the car's history I found a receipt for an engine rebuild for £3k so it's had some love in the past. Saves me a job as it's quite a detailed rebuild. The engine bay looks reasonably tidy after a quick clean up but it will be a work in progress:

First things first though, I need to lose the wheels as they are awful, so I have some Calibre Dub wheels to go on it this weekend. Not the most expensive wheel out there but they look a dam site better than the 14" painted steels.

That list means I've got my weekend cut out but I'm looking forward to cracking on with it, I'll get the basics right first then set about tinkering.

    Stay tuned.

  4. The Fabia has now been sold but I'd just like to say thanks for the knowledge and help I've received from various members on here, it's saved copious amounts of time and money.

Next project is a MK2 Golf Gti 16v (strongly dislike the wheels but that's in progress)

It's a strange feeling having a car the same age as you  :S

    Thanks again.

I'll still be about sharing what I've learnt through my experiences :-)

  5. 66mm mounting depth according to some web-blurb I read. How'd you manage that? Or have you got mildly tweaked door cards?

Internally skimmed the door cards and spaced the door cards with cork slightly, very tight fit though. Hardest part is finding space for the crossovers.

  6. Right, after a long boost problem with a boost problem on a Bora this Turbo is now for sale.

The issue was that the car was not boosting therefore he presumed the turbo was knackered, he bought a new turbo, I fitted it and the problem persisted. Turned out to be a broken wire to the MAP sensor!

Anyway this turbo is now surplus and will fit all ALH engines. Comes with manifold, no play in the shaft and the car had done 104k with a full service history.

    £120 ono.

  7. How'd you excavate the back of the shelf without ruining the top surface?

This is the best/most pragmatic effort I've seen. Uses all original fixings. You might want to have a look at those side supports. At the least, consider screwing them in.

    Is it easily detachable?

    J.

I marked it out with an oversized template then used a sharp chisel to remove the bottom layer of plastic (two layers glued together), then smoothed the cut with sand paper.

Thanks, it's relatively light as well. I used foam strips to distribute the weight on the side supports, I didn't want to screw it down as I would like to be able to easily take it out if needs be. All that would involve would be to detach the speaker terminals and lift it out

  8. I managed to pick up some Focal 6x9's for £20 courtesy of Gumtree. Seeing as I already have Focal components in the doors and an extra input spare on my amp it was a no brainer to find somewhere to put them in the Fabia.

I didn't want to just cut holes out of the parcel shelf as I've heard them before and it just ruins the sound as well as showing people what they can nick. I managed to find a light but sturdy bit of wood to mount them to, cut it to size and mounted the speakers in them. I then cut voids out of the parcel shelf for the speakers to fit into then drilled loads of small holes to allow the sound out.

I'm quite pleased with the finished article, the wood needs carpeting to finish it completely but that's a job for another day. They sound a lot better than I originally thought to, no distortion
