the truth about electric cars
Likewise, basing things on the CO2 emissions is a joke, the actual amount produced by cars is minute when compared to the natural production of it via all the natural things that have been happening for centuries without any influence from man kind. If we think about it, CO2 is a vital gas for plant growth, and yes, the population of the planet is growing but equally so to is the amount of food that needs to be grown to produce the food. so as the population grows, the CO2 grows, but the plants being grown also consume that gas in ever increasing volumes. It does not help when huge forests get chopped down without new ones being developed to replace them. Wild fires that are created by irresponsible people having a BBQ etc in the wrong location, or even as has been proven in many cases, started deliberately. Also, I expect that many of those who are shouting the loudest about all polluting ICE cars that are polluting the air that we all beath etc, are also possibly the largest proportion of those that are jetting of to overseas holidays, annually and more frequently even, or taking sea cruises etc. Personally, I cannot afford to do such things so the miles that I drive year in my lower than average emission car is not making that much CO2 when compared to a overseas flight or cruise, especially when, many of those doing so, will continue to add salt to the wound by either having a place where they are going to, with a car or cars, or will be hiring one when they arrive, which may not be an electric one even. I have friends who holiday in the states and will always hire out a thumping great 5 litre V8 Ford Mustang and drive the route 66.😮

the truth about electric cars
That is why many people are advocating the dropping of enforcing all "new" cars will be electric by 2030 and allowing people the free choice, so that they can purchase the right car for them and their own circumstances, rather than 1 size fits all.

the truth about electric cars
@PetrolDave This is so true, and you only have to look at the structures of any government these days, they are all made from largely career politicians with no actual skills in any other walk of life. Relying on guidance from other "experts" who are in the employ of someone with a vested interest in a particular outcome.

the truth about electric cars
And there we have it, of course no governments/politicians would ever dream of distorting the figures, or of actually listening to the lobby groups with the biggest financial clout, would they, no its totally unheard off...................

the truth about electric cars
Do you really, in your heart, believe all that guff? Are you that gullible? I expect that if the governments said that the moon was really made from cheese, and that there really was a London bus or two on it that you would fall for that lie too?

the truth about electric cars
Which is one reason why these independent vloggers are so important in the grand scheme of things, as these are people who can and will expose these events for the benefit of those that are not aware of them. The companies themselves, as we have all witnessed at some point in our lives, will attempt to bury these bad events and silence anyone who dares to speak out about it until such times as the authorities get to find out and demand a recall is carried out.

More bad news, and this is from a pro EV person / vlogger.

the truth about electric cars
Nobody is claiming, least of all him, that he is doing so. All he is doing is precisely what you and others do when you come across some news, be it from personal first hand experience or what ever, passing it on for the benefit of others to make what they want to make from it. The only differences being that many of the items he reports on are not being covered by our media, either online or in the printed word, and that he has chosen to make a living from it.

the truth about electric cars
Why are you so hard on people for exposing things when they are going so badly wrong? I just don't get where you are coming from at times. You can be as harsh as you like when it comes to criticizing certain electric vehicles, or EV infrastructure such as charging hubs and the companies that run them and also comment on some ICE vehicles, as if it is essential to either be the owner or regular driver of an EV to be able to comment or even as in this case, report on them. It is not a requirement to be either in order to see something that is so clearly not working as it should be. What is it with him and his reports that you are opposed to, do you think he is making all of it up just for clicks? Does he not always have the supporting documentation that he presents and reads from, or is that also faked? Do you actually for a fact know that what he is saying is not true? All that massive amount of public money being wasted, with about 50% of the buses not being in a usable state because they are always in a state needing repairs, when their diesel counterparts are usable? I never notice you holding back when it comes to being critical of anything that the UK government that in your opinion is wasteful, particularly if it involves Scotland in some way or other?

the truth about electric cars
Well, it would seem that electric school buses do not share the alleged, legendry EV reliability needing far less servicing etc.

the truth about electric cars
Geez, this driver was extremely unlucky, but just goes to show how much of a risk you take being one of the first few owners of these new cars being imported into the UK.

the truth about electric cars
Keeping on topic, I believe that all EV chargers are online only and the point I made was that when they go wrong, they have the potential to leave one stranded, maybe in the middle of nowhere in unknown territory in the middle of night, which can be bad, but even worse if you're a woman travelling alone. Yes there are some dyno juice pumps that are unmanned, that said, all the ones that I have encountered and also used successfully, all tend to be at filling stations like Asda and and by their very nature are in built up areas, usually fairly busy and also there are other manned filling stations within a mile or two, which sadly is not the case with most chargers.
-
the truth about electric cars
That sounds like a bit of shyt show, glad fossil fuel stations I use are manned 24/7 with proper cashiers although there is always the option to pay at the pump, but most savvy drivers push the button to pay cashier rather then pay at the pump. Could be a real nightmare otherwise.

the truth about electric cars
Given that according to their product line up the N and N Line were not out in the 2020 lineup, we are talking here about a GT and Premium SE BEV and both have a 0-62mph of 7.9secs, the BEV is clearly a disadvantage to me based on insurance quote alone, and by the way, I'm quite a few miles away from asylum hotel disturbance, that is right on the London boundary.

the truth about electric cars
Well, the ICE Kona was the GTI version and not the normal sedate model yet it far cheaper to insure. Just shows insurance is fickle.
-
the truth about electric cars
Location etc will make some variations I accept that, but surely not to the type of fuel a car uses. I used my precise details that I have always used and the very same ones used to insure my new Kodiaq so the the increase in insurance costs has to be down to the cost of repair in the event of a claim. A BEV plugged in on a home charger is less likely to be stolen than ICE as the cable is attached to the car? The WTF? Mileage figures is the recorded miles for those cars on Auto trader, meaning the electric car has 14000 mores on the clock.

the truth about electric cars
No, but that is never going to change my mind about the technology not being matured enough yet to be considered stable and safe and also the future. I understand that you and others have different opinions, and thats is perfectly fine, it'd be boring if we all thought the same eh?

the truth about electric cars
Ditto, been into cars likewise since I was a kid, I was also the first to own a car and did so as soon as I was legally able to, my parents followed suite some years later after I got married and moved away so they no longer had me to run them about. Like you, I also have always loved the underdogs in the car world . I also love the top dogs and have driven plenty and thoroughly enjoyed them, but could never afford them, apart from that Vanden Plas 3 Litre, which had to go in the end due to the likelihood of petrol rationing being introduced, it was a thirsty beast to be sure, but I loved it.

the truth about electric cars
@lol-lol Sure, but once again, you did not read what I wrote, I agreed about the regenerative braking but I also said not everybody liked it or one pedal driving, thus indicating that some turned it either down or off, and then drove as per conventional ICE car, which they were used to driving, and then, once again pads and discs could also be changed. Once again you demonstrated that you think everything is anti-EV, with out fully understanding what others are saying. Also you said "Been some EVs where the on regen part of the braking system has seized up thru lack of use so it needs a bit of TLC because it is used so little by many EV drivers who regen 99% of the time." Not a very safe situation to be in is it? I'm not so sure about the EV insurance being less expensive these days, insurers have got wise to the fact that many EVs have to be written off after some accidents for fear of the battery being damaged and leaving them with a ticking time bomb so many will not take that chance and simply write the car off and then premiums start to rise in order to ensure that they are are operating at a loss. This a situation that you personally may not be aware of as an existing EV owner with no such claims made, but I'm sure that there are plenty of other new owners discovering that when they look for quotes on a potential change from ICE to EV as result of the pressure being brought to bear on them, is a really nasty unexpected surprise that wipes away much of the smile from enjoying cheap home charging. To illustrate the above insurance hike in EVs over ICE I have done a test, using money supermarket on Auto Trader site, same driver details in both cases, therefore the same insurers quoted, only car has changed, 2020 Hyndai Kona Premium SE, both cars valued at £14,000 ICE version 6,000 miles £480 full Comp (petrol) BEV version 20,000 miles £730 full Comp. (full electric) So that is a 52% hike in the premium for the full electric car over the more likely to self combust according to some ICE car and the BEV also has an 233% increase in the mileage at the commencement of the proposed policy, not really looking that rosy is it?

the truth about electric cars
Personally, I really couldn't give a flying f**k what my neighbours, family or friends etc are driving, I'm only interested what I want to drive and that for me always starts with "can I sit here comfortably for hours at a time on long trips", next comes, is it suitable for my own immediate family needs and what is it like to drive. Its external looks are for others to put up with, I can't see them from the drivers seat, neither do I spent much time actually looking at the car from outside it. Even when I had company cars and I where could have any car within a set budget, rather than from a particular model, I have always gone for the car that I would personally buy with my own money that ticked all the above boxes, hence why I for the last 5 company cars, I always went for the Skoda while all my colleagues went for Audis, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Volvo, Honda and Alfa Romeo, all of which cost more and they gave the reasons for their choices as looking good on their drives. In other words they were being greedy with someone else's money and shallow. Don't you remember when VW used to say similar about their cars,"If only everything was as reliable as a Volkswagen", or "Jetta, tough as boots"

the truth about electric cars
Ever thought that maybe it might also depend on the actual SOC at the time of parking the car up for that time. I'm purely going on what my SIL told me and I have not read the manual etc. So when she tells that it defaults to electric mode first, she is unable to select petrol mode, it selects itself when the SOC apparently is no longer sufficient so then recharges from the engine. So if that is correct, and the car has not driven enough to increase the SOC to last 2 weeks to allow the car to drive off in electric mode, then I would say it sounds to be perfectly feasible. I would need to read the manual to confirm.

the truth about electric cars
Just as a by, my sister in law has recently swapped her 10 year old Toyota Yaris for 2 year old Yaris Cross (hybrid) and just to illustrate how the complexity plays a major part in modern cars, the car defaults to electric mode only switching to ICE when the battery can no longer support movement. She has friends who have similar cars and the dealer also told her that it is essential to make sure that the traction battery is kept topped up and the only way this can be can be done is to drive it until the petrol engine kicks in and then to drive it for at least 25 minutes, once a week. She and and my wife are going away on holiday to Madeira in September for 2 weeks and she has arranged for brother in law to drive it while they are away and I shall be driving them to Gatwick in my diesel and picking them up again as she is not willing to risk coming back to a car that is not usable and having to call out someone to charge the battery sufficient to enable the petrol engine to start. Traction battery getting too low in SOC prevents petrol engine from working. Her friends have also confirmed this to be true as they have faced the same issues after 2 weeks holiday.

Ed Miliband is one of the arm chair experts and he is pushing the net zero and EV agenda the most.

the truth about electric cars
@classic you'll get no arguments from me on any of what you have said, apart from what you spent on regular maintenance of your Superb, could just as well also be spent on an EV, as not everyone likes all the regenerative braking that is available on EV's or indeed the one pedal system that some also offer, so in that case the pads and discs could well be replaced on an EV just the same. I to, have spent similar amount on my Superb, but no plugs, oil filters, pads or discs, but on replacing worn out shock absorber, worn front suspension bushes and track rod ends, broken coil spring and an alternator, all of which there are equivalent parts on an EV are there not, so those parts could also fail just as on an ICE, and I'm willing to bet some may well be even more expensive to replace.
