Peugeot 205 MI16

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Currently we have a 205 1.6 gti (it's the girlfriend car) and we've decided to spruce it up a bit and put a MI16 engine in to replace the aging 131k 1.6 engine.

Here's the car in question;

I've managed to source a MI16 engine with a full rebuild and all the parts to fit it. The only problems (ha) I need to overcome are;

Shorten the downpipe (should be easy)

Fit the radiator forward to allow more room for the intake manifold (again easy)

Last but not least.... the wiring loom .... :thumbdwn: I don't really have any idea how this will work out, but i'm getting the full mi16 loom so everything will be there. It's just working out how!!!

Anyone been out in a mi16'd 205 or know much about them?

Should be a blast, 160bhp from the engine giving 200bhp/tonne roughly so should feel alot faster than the vrs.

Overall plans are to upgrade the suspension and brakes this year.

I'm toying with stripping the interior out and caging / bucket / harness'ing it up. Although I kind of like the stealth look. The main concern is safety though...

Anyway, just thought i'd share my "project with you guys".

Should get the engine in a month or so and should start taking the 1.6 engine out in the next few weeks.

First engine conversion here I come!!

Can't wait

This brings back memories. Back about 15 years ago i had a 1.9GTI that i had that engine put in plus a dimma bodykit and shed loads more. First thing i will say is that i saved loads of money and fitting time by buying a Citroen BX 1.9 GTI engine as it is the same engine as an MI16 but costs a lot less to buy. Fit throttle boddies as then there is no ECU wiring loom to mess with plus it gives you a lot more room in the engine bay. Change the stock exhaust manifold which is very restrictive for a four branch one.

Peugeot Ecosse are the experts at this stuff.

Nice, I quite like the dimma kit.

I've managed to get this rebuilt engine for just a shade under £500 so it's really not that expensive for a rebuilt engine. Infact i've seen them go for £350+ with 100k miles on them so it's certainly a good price!

Throttle bodies would be ideal, but the cost is simply too much right now. I'd much rather put money into the handling next as 160bhp will be MORE than enough to for a while :)

Thanks for the link, *writes a wish list*

Where abouts in the Southwest are you?

Needs the 1.9 speedlines badly, and lose the mudflaps...

Then get the engine... mmm

Have you seen the T16 on ebay... 0 miles at 15k at the minute

Thats pure porn

Throttle Bodies Too Expensive!

R1 Bike Carbs! Thats what you need :D

Pick them up from Fleabay for £100 with the fuel pump from the R1!

Send them to Bogg Brothers for Re-Jetting, they'll make you a manifold etc and the car will sound frickin' awesome!

Bogg Brothers fabrication

The only thing is you'll have to control the ignition advance, but thats pretty easy to do!

Do It

No waaay!! I love the ickly 14s on it, I think they really suite the car- plus EVERY 205 has the speedlines on nowadays. Oh, plus the 14s are a fair bit lighter.

You might have to get rid of the 14s to fit bigger brakes, as 160bhp means you will arrive at corners a bit faster.

Make sure you get properly ballanced brake kit designed for a 205 then as lift off over steer was a big problem, so if you get the brakes balance wrong then I'd guess you might get some nasty effects under braking too.

It was bad enough with a 1.9 never mind the MI16/GTI 16v

On the BX comment, don't forget the BX has the LHM pump that you would have to deal with.

205's have lift off oversteer probs due to them being SWB and twitchy handling! Lift off oversteer has nothing to do with brake balance! That should be handled by the compensator on the rear beam!

Indeed, but if you **** up your brake balance, front to back, say too much rear braking then as the thing is twitchy anyway you will be hedging yourself more easily that on most cars.

The lift off oversteer comment was to point out that the car was so twitchy, that is exactly what made it handle so well and also be so bloody dangerous in the 1.9GTi form.

I'm tempted to do the 307 hdi conversion... although some people have said it's too good a setup for the 205. Ie it's too powerfull, with no abs etc... it looks up pretty easy. Not great.

I agree about having better brakes, but remember it's a light car no matter what engine it has in it. Tempted to put some 1.9 calipers on it and some good quality discs/pads tbh.

Remember it's a 1.6 so it has drums on the back too, not discs....which some people prefer.

beeftech, thanks for the link- I will keep that in mind once it's all sorted out! Might start taking the engine out this weekend.... Do they charge much? What sort of total cost would I be looking at for the R1 carbs?

"That should be handled by the compensator on the rear beam!"

Could you explain this a bit more please? Costs?

Did I mention this will be my girlfriend daily drive? :D

(She can walk to work, ha).

Well you can get R1 carbies for roughly £100 or so, think a manifold is £175 from Bogg brothers, not sure how much they charge for a re-Jet, Read an article somewhere that said if you DIY it should cost between £400-500 quid for bike carbies for everything!

The compensator is a valve on the rear beam that is load sensing! when you brake, weight is transfered to the front and the rear becomes light, the compensator automatically adjust the rear braking effort so that the rear wheels don't lock up and stops you from swapping ends!

A badly adjusted or siezed compensator will see you spinning off into a hedge :D

If you ABS then the computer sorts out this for you!

used to service a 205GTI with the MI16 engine in it , it was an awesome bit of kit

it had Weber carbs fitted , so no messing with injection looms
