Are my calipers too big or what?

Featured Replies

Had some trouble a little while ago with the brake pads moving up and down in the front calipers and causing a clunking when braking after going forwards then backwards etc. I replaced the front discs and pads a little while ago and the problem seemed to cease but now it's back with a vengence.

I used Brembo discs from GSF and OEM pads from the dealer (which come with replacement shims) so you'd assume they'd be a good fit. Obviously not. :thumbdwn:

Almost need to use sticky back plastic on the back of the pad to stop them moving up and down in the caliper. Failing that I'm into the realms of bending out the shims a little and padding them out to stop them bending and allowing movement in the pad.

Anyone else get this? It's really annoying - clunk clunk every time I park the car and do any braking.

When I upgraded to the tt set up the old pads fell away from the backing plate (?) that held them fixed in position in the caliper, was quite shocked, don't know if this relevant.

Hmm...it would seem that they are simply a slack fit in there if they fall out that easily.

I remember there being some discrepancy regarding sticky pads on the back of the brake pad holding them in place.....I can confirm that this is not the case. The little brass bendy shim things are pretty much all that does that job.

the mintex pads I have had 3M tape on the rear and yes only the little metal shims

Lol excuse to buy some 312's me thinks

LOL. Fitting 312's, not for braking power, just for some peace and quiet. :D

Back in Beemer world, you had to fit cheapo non OEM pads to get movement in the caliper like this.

I wonder if getting some of those 3M pads stuck to the backs of them would be the answer? Trip to Halfrauds me thinks if so.... :D

(I'll say hello whilst I'm there John. :D - P.S. She likes the Sat Nav - thanks for the help ;))

Unless I press them like you did and my bottom envelopes my skull, leaving me peeping at the world through my rectum.

Thanks for the tip - will try some of those sticky pads I think.

If you're off to Scarborough for fish and chips, some of the best places to be found are not on the sea front. The one just outside the in laws is good...you can get the 'moby d1ck' which is a riiight fish. ;)

Agreed... 312mm are mad!
