Loss of Power and "Mutley" Sound 1.9Tdi Non-PD

I have been doing some reading on this site about Mk1 Octys loosing power, there seems to be a quite a range of problems.

My Car:

2001 1.9TDi Octy Elegance 110BHP Non-PD

Problem:

The car will go into limp mode at around 3,000rpm regardless of what gear or speed, it also will have a "Mutley" type sound causing the car to jerk 2 or 3 times between 1500rpm and 2200rpm, for those of you who dont know who mutley is it sounds like sharp wheezing sound.

I have replaced the MAF with a genuine Bosch Skoda Part, this seem to cure the problem for around 100 miles! If i jump start the car 2 or 3 times then this will clear the problem.

It happens on gentle accleration, up hills and also on hard acceleration.

Also, even when the problem isnt there it feels as if the car is being "held back or restrained" it feels as if the power is there in the engine but its just not getting to the wheels.

So if its not the MAF, what should I try next apart from a turbo-recon?

Gummed up turbo. Going into limp mode at 3000 rpm is exactly what mine did - vanes are jammed open and the turbo overboosts, you should notice less lag from the turbo initially then it's like an anchor fell out the boot and it's 0-60 if your lucky.

Don't know about the dog impressions though, could be a boost leak?

Probably a good idea to get the fault codes read, there are two you get that indicate the gummed up turbo, can't remember what they are though.

I should go to a specialist rather than a Skoda dealer, they will just want to replace the turbo and charge over £1k. I had mine cleaned out and it worked a treat. Just need to remember to boot it fairly often to keep the muck from building up again.

Cheers, Trundlenut, i can only get to about 52 or 53mph, will run VAG on it this evening, funny it only started when SWMBO started to drive the car, maybe my slightly heavy right boot kept it clean! Cheers.

You should be able to get more than 53mph it will just take a long time to get there, mine did 70 eventually.

Maybe that's connected to the canine inpersonations.

I see your based in nottingham, have you used Farmers or Rainworth Skoda in the past and if so which would you recomend, ive just moved to the area from Ireland so i dont really know whats hot and whats not! Cheers.

Don't go to a main dealer unless you have a warranty as they will replace the turbo. Go to a turbo specialist and it can be stripped down, cleaned up and put back on for considerably less than the price of the turbo.

There is even a DIY guide somewhere on here.

Cheers cheezemonkhai, i def wont be asking a main dealer to replace the turbo, its going in for a service so i thought I'd ask them for their "opinion" and see what they come back with, ive been looking at diy guides and a few people have been talking about BTN Turbo as a good place to start. Cheers.

I'd agree with the advice so far. I can't recommend a garage in Nottingham though.

No probs, ive had it out for a spin this evening, SWMBO came home from work so i drove it while it was warm, it cut out once and after that it was fine, even did a 0-60 in 10 seconds so all seemed good, will try it again from cold in the morning, VAG showed up all clear. To be continued....

I haven't used either of those dealers, apart to get bits from Farmers. My car originally came from Clock in Spondon and their aftersales service is not good.

I use a garage run by a family friend in Long Eaton because I trust them.

The errors I had when I had the gummed up turbo were:

Charge sensor positive deviation,

and

manifold pressure sensor intermittant

I don't have the numbers for these to hand though. There also didn't seem to be any particular pattern to when the problem occurred sometimes it didn't do it for days and other times it would just keep doing it.

I had the turbo changed on mine, it is about 3 hours work as a rough guide. This was done by a "chap down the road" for a £25/hour. So that should give a rough idea of time. Obviously once the turbo it off it needs to be cleaned up.

If taking the tubro off, remember to get new gaskets, and it is recommended to get a new oil feeder pipe, althoug my mechanic was able to re-use mine, so I have that sitting spare in the garage!

Just a thought, i took it for a spin this morning and it cut out 3 or 4 times and when it eventually got past this it still felt sluggish, if the turbo is "gummed" up would tend to be a bit "looser" when its warm as the gunk is warm and more fluid hence the problem doesnt really show itself when warm?

I don't think so, it's basically a build up of soot which stops the vanes in the turbo moving and they jam in the open position. Describing it as gummed up is probably a bit misleading. If you search you should be able to find a guide to cleaning the turbo which includes before and after pictures of the part with the vanes.

Agreed; "sooted up" would be a better description.

This is one of the faults I had, so I vote mucky turbo. What's the mileage on the car and does it do a lot of driving around town?

That's the code I had last year. VNT actuator was sticking. "Sticky turbo". Ended up with a new turbo under warranty but perhaps you could get it cleaned up?

Just had my turbo de-coked in the last month. It was sent away to a specialist and took two weeks (I had new Roomster as courtesy car)

Its a 2001 - 97k and does nearly all town driving as i use the company car for any distance!! oh well, out of interestet what sort of prices have people paid to get their turbos "de-mucked"
