Sounds like its cracking under tension.

Poor installation perhaps?

I went through three windscreens in about 2 years in my Octavia mk II. They all cracked following a stone chip very near an edge.

That's hardluck. I have only ever had one crack and that was some twonk throwing a stone...

yeah, both have started near the edge, must just be bad luck :thumbdwn:

I think it probably is bad luck. I had just one replacement windscreen in more than 13 years of driving, then had two replacement screens in six months. Unlike older cars, the modern bonded windscreen forms part of the structure of the car. You can get the tiniest stone chip and due to the stresses placed upon the glass, it can form a crack. A rapid change in temperature, going over a road hump a little fast, and the weakness caused by the chip spreads. Worse still, fail to replace a badly cracked windscreen promptly and the bodyshell can distort.

The new bonded screens have done much to strengthen the modern car and make them safer for occupants in an accident, the downside is the sort of thing you've come up against here.

I think we're meant to call it progress, but there are downsides too.

Jo's right about temp, I had a stone chip near a corner turn into a six inch crack after one hard frost (renault scenic)

That'll teach me for not getting a prompt repair.

Just had my windscreen replaced on my Fabia (last one before that was on a Peugeot back in 1994). Stone hit the windscreen at motorway speeds just below the wiper blade so very near the edge of the glass. Three miles later, I had a crack about 30cms long and it got longer still when parked overnight.

Chap from Autoglass did a good job of replacing it but the interesting thing is, he said it had been changed before. Now that's odd I said as I bought the car from new and I certainly hadn't replaced it before. Autoglass chap reckons they change a lot in the factory before they get delivered to the dealers.
