Exhausted Exhaust?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Bit of a weird one this, I seem to have a problem with my exhaust.

When accelerating and driving around 60-65mph there is an awful rattling noise like a metallic noise.

And I noticed the other day there is now a blowing noise coming from the front.

Today I opened my bonnet and got a rag and pulled together where the springs are, where the manifold meets the downpipe/cat, which cured the rattle and the blow, only to return when I let go.

Has anyone ever had this before? And any idea what the cure was? Was it the springs, or did it need a whole new downpipe and cat?

In addition last September it had a new system from the cat back fitted. Also the car is a 1999 LXi 1.6.

Cheers

A very puzzled Craig!

I've just had one of the cats go in the V8 and it was doing a similar thing. Tinny rattle and then loss of power when on boost.

I've taken the cat off and the ceramic has gone. Have smashed whats left off with a hammer and screwdriver and am going to put it back on for now. It's a 2 stage cat and the other half is ok.

I do have some sports cas on order though.

If it isn't too bad a job you could try and get the cat off and gice it a good shake to see if it rattles??

Cheers

I don't think its the cat, as it wouldn't stop when I am hold the downpipe to the manifold if it was the cat.

I had an Astra with a similar exhaust joint, with springs, it is like a ball and socket with a doughnut gasket in between. In my case the doughnut gasket seal fell apart cauing the joint to rattle and leak. I undid the spring bolts opened the joint up covered the doughnut with exhaust putty and re assembled.Worked for me but suppose ring seal/gasket could be bought at factors or Halfrauds.

Their is some sort of flexi pipe near the top.

Yours may be split and will need replacing, its a downpipe off job.

I have a joint like this on my Toyota. It was rattling and blowing recently so I took it apart, cleaned it up and replaced the gasket. It seems to be fine now, 500 miles or so on. It cost me about £2 so it might be worth trying before you think about bits of the pipe.
