electronic engine management light.

Featured Replies

hello all,

electronic engine management light on our car remains lit when driving - never

occured before.

car is a fabia 1.4 mpi, classic - basic car with no extras. year 2002, low miles.

any help, ideas or pointers from all you knowledgeable, informed people out there would be a help.

thank you.

Could be a multitude of things, could be the brakelight switch mate, maybe best to take it to skoda and get a vagcom com check to see what it is.

Hope this helps

Brakelight switch is distinct possibility - get someone to look if they stay on all the time, as this is the usual failure mode. Other than that, a diagnostic scan may be in order. Rumour has it that certain faults can be cleared by turning the key one click in the ignition (so all the dash bulbs light up but the car doesn't start) and leaving it for a minute or two before starting. My wife's displayed the EPC light once briefly and I did this, but I've no way of proving whether it was something that would have gone away by itself anyway...

Thanks for thr advice mate, I'll note this for future ref

A brake light switch fault will usually bring on the EPC light. It could be a temperature sensor fault, has the temperature gauge been behaving erratically at all?

many thanks to you people, you are 100% right.

1. switched on ignition to 1st position, (dash lights on but no engine start). left this for 2 minutes as you suggest, then swticed back on and started engine, the light went off immediately.

2. your question regarding the temperature gauge is also correct. the car has been standing unused and not run for some time and has very low miles. if i start the car and drive for say 1 or 2 miles the gauge remains at cold. if i then stop the car and restart, the gauge will then register as it should.

the car is 6+ years old, however it has such low miles as to be a virtually new car and gives all impressions of the gauge or temp sensor " sticking" as sometimes happens with a new or unused car. (and other things mechanical.)

where is the temp sensor, where is best to buy one and is it easy to fit.

thank you once again for your assistance.

As it happens, I did a guide, here. You may be able to get the part from somewhere like ebay, but they're not expensive from a dealer. Some people have suggested replacing the thermostat housing (the bit the sensor fits into) at the same time to pre-empt thermostat failure, but this is a bit more complicated (and the housing / sensor kit costs a little bit more). It depends how good you are at that sort of thing, and how worried you are about the thermostat failing...
