Newbie ICE questions...

Featured Replies

My only experience of ICEing my fabia so far has been to buy JaneC's old head unit and changer (kenwood) and have them installed by a local company...

Now I'm thinking of doing something with the boot that I never use - nothing too OTT - just a sub and an amp.

Ideally, I'd like to stick a false MDF floor into the fab, and mount the sub & amp... add a little carpet to make it look nice, etc...

Ok so far? Good ... onto the questions

1) My kenwood HU has RCA out - so what else will I need apart from the sub and the amp?

2) Has anyone ever fitted any sort of false-floor? Ultimately I want it to be secure (no point slamming breaks on to avoid someone only to have a speaker come flying into the back of my head!) - but also to be easy to remove (to get to spare wheel, etc). I'm happy playing with MDF and a jigsaw, etc...

2a) Anyone got the dimensions/plan of the skoda boot? ;)

3) Worth buying a fancy wiring kit, or just get something from Maplins (or similar)

And the standard catch-all question...

4) Anything else I need to consider?

I'm aiming for a cheapish install - I'm not bothered about 15" subs and 1kw amps - just want a bit of bass, but not to end up with the kind of system you can hear half a mile away (I am considerate to my neighbours, except the one with the renault 5 GT turbo...!!)

Cheers in advance for any advice you can offer...

Dont know what the Fab boot is like - but in the Octy there is enough room behind the wheel arches to hide some amps.

I've got 2 x v12 amps powering the subs - which are mounted back2back on an mdf board which is silicon'd to the skin of the car (the board is to take the weight):

The amp for the components is mounted on the rhs where the net used to be. There is a gap behind it where the crossover adjusterwhatsimacallits are hidden:

Finally the 2 subs (10" Type R 1kw) are in a twin box which is strapped to the rear seats + struts. It's a bit of a backbreaker to take the box out but then it's my own fault for needing to have 2!

Not the most prettiest of things but it works fantastically and it loud. Best bit (or worst bit depending on your point of view) is that the Octa is very well soundproofed. Even with it up full blast (too loud to actually sit in the car) - you can hardly hear it. You can only tell how loud it is by the vibration of the rear spoiler.

Oh and you'll need some dynamat as well ;)

Cheers for the info Dave - sadly the fab boot is just a tiny bit smaller than in an octy! :-/

There's not really much room behind the wheel arches to put much at all, hence my thinking with the whole false floor thing... all going well I should be able to manage to cut some MDF to fit.

Was thinking about having this floor raised up about a foot or so, with the sub(s) mounted facing up from it, and the amp 'recessed' but not covered. Working out how to put it together is the main challenge right now, as in theory I might have to disassemble it at the roadside in order to get the spare wheel!

I've got the next two days off work, so what's the betting I'll end up in homebase at the cutting counter, MDF in hand? :-)

Some people make a feature out of their spare wheel - mount it sideways (running front to back) on one side of the boot - bit of light on it - looks great! and easy to get out!

The Octa has a huge recess under the boot where the wheel + tools are kept - if the Fab is the same you could use that recess to house the amps or make a sub box to fit in it!

Just some ideas for ya!

Dave,

Can you tell us more about the silicon stuff you used to attach the MDF panel to the car?

Price, materials, reversibility, how to do it, that kind of stuff... :)

Cheers,

Rob.

Hi Rob,

I didn't actually do it myself (done by these nice people). I would guess that any really strong adhesive would be OK?

The way it works is that there is a MDF panel 'adhered' to the car body behind the lining - then the carpeted bit (I know it's the wrong colour  ) which has the amps fixed to it is attached to the other bit through the lining. When i come to remove it i will simply remove the bit of carpetted MDF + amps from the boot side of the lining and leave the other bit stuck to car shell behind the lining where it wont be doing any harm. :)

(Moderator's Note: www.cel-direct.com has been added to our ICE web links.)

That's sounds like a very tidy solution for mounting stuff in the boot...

Cheers Dave!

Rob.
