Becker/Harman Kardon

Anyone with any experience installing these H/U? In the instruction manual it states "connect only pin 15 or 30 otherwise excessive current draw will occur when the unit is off". Pin 15 and 30 are the switched 12V and permanent 12V supplys. Looking at the harness for my old car it would appear I didn't notice this and connected both simultaneously. I didn't have any problems with flat batteries or anything. Anyone got a view on this?

Cheers ta.

do you use it every day say to and from work ?

if so you will not noice the draw how ever if you leave it untouched for more then 48hrs the batt will be dead...also if your batteries condition goes beond perfect this problem can increass..and eventually the batt will go flat over night regardless of use..

It lasted 3 weeks in the old car whilst I was on holiday but I take your point. I presume the unit needs either 12V permanent or 12V switched to function correctly (i.e. using just the switched supply won't lead to loss of presets) but how would it all work with the VAG style 'stays powered until the key is removed from the ignition'? I wouldn't want to have to manually turn it off everytime i got out of the car. Also, aren't the 12V permanent and 12V switched wires crossed over from ISO standard anyway in an Octy? Which one should i snip?

ISO standard is swapped in the octy, best way to connect it would be to use the VW wiring adaptor from halfords. This also bypasses the ecu connection to the symphony stereo. Failing to bypass this will result in the dealer blowing up there vag diagnostic tool, as you bung 12V down a data cable.

I'm using one of those Mannyo but it provides both permanent and switched connections to the H/U. The H/U instructions say to connect one only. Which one is what i'm thinking. I think i'm probably going to snip the permenant connection justified on the following basis: 1) if I snip the switched wire then I don't see how the unit will know to switch off when i turn the ignition off and 2) the H/U has been in its box in the loft for 6months and has not forgotten the radio presets therefore this shouldn't be a problem.

Thats a strange setup, usually one is used to power the radio memory (perm) and the other to switch the radio on/off with the ignition. If you disconnect the wrong one, you may find your radio presets and other settings are lost if you remove the key.

It is a bit strange isn't it but I guess that's the Germans for you. Like I said though, it sat unpowered in its box for 6 months yet when plugged back in, all of the presets were still there. It must have an internal battery.

quite possibly does have an internal battery, i used the ISO connector from halfords when fitting my pioneer to the octy.

the h/u didnt say anything about a perm or switched feed so i just plugged the cables from the OE unit to the ISO block and then plugged that into the new h/u, everything works perfectly so i'm ok with that.

Best thing to do is plug it in as is, dont cut anything and see how you go, you could always monitor the battery with a multi meter
