Gearbox Knocking sound

Featured Replies

Hi People,

I have had a look throught the search system on this and can't find any1 else with the exact same problem,

I was on my way to work this morning and noticed that there was a knocking sound from the gearbox in 3rd gear! Then driving back this afternoon and its got worse, again mainly in 3rd and 5th to start with and then noticed as I got closer to home that it was doing it in all gears, any ideas what it could be??

I've had a similar problem in my astra and it turned out to be a recon gearbox job, although it was making the sound in deceleration rather than my vRS doing it whilst on light acceleration.

I've only done 21k in it so far and I did at least 100k in my 2ltr astra before i started getting problems!

I will phone my local skoda garage tomo as I didnt get in till 6 today but any help would be great on this

Sounds like a bearing issue to be. Time for a box rebuild.

Really?? Thats not good is it? Even after 21k?

dog bone mount???

clutching at straws really, as Lumox says sounds like bearing wear, needs looking at, i had it on my hyundai coupe and when it went i was picking up cogs and casing for miles done the road and boiled gear box oil smell is the work of the devil!!!!

Well there's no smell yet, and to be honest I havent got the best hearing in the world but only noticed it today!?

I did have a quick look under the car today for any leaks as i was a bit worried that the gearbox was going to lock up on the motorway, but couldnt see anything (mind you the belly plate was in the way and i couldnt see the gearbox itself)

Really?? Thats not good is it? Even after 21k?

Just rebuilt a gearbox at work, jumping out of gear. 800 miles on the clock. Found that they had missed a spacer out in between 3rd and 4th when building the box, so anything is possible.

Hey people, just an update for any1 that was wondering, its all fixed now, new input shaft & bearing was fitted and all seems well!

Took it to Station Garage Ewhurst (where I bought the car from) they were very sympathetic and understanding and did their best to get me a loan car and get mine fixed, their service is really second to none!

Repair was done under warrenty but took 4 days to complete, although I don't want to seem ungreatful as I can imagine a gearbox strip to be quite complicated, they still had time to fix up those stone chips that I've aquired over the past year or so for the total sum of £0.00! so thumbs up all round!
