1.6 petrol MPG

Featured Replies

I am just in the process of working out my proper mpg in my 1.6 petrol Fabia. I couldn't see any others with this model in other threads.

Anyone any ideas so far?

Thanks

Well, after an exhaustive test I have calculated 33 mpg. Thought it would be better than that for some reason.

It very much depends how much stop/start journeys/short journeys you do. My 1.4 16v does a pretty reliable 42 mpg over a mixed cross country drive, the 1.6 shouldn't be that far short. Some of the extra engine capacity is compensated by the fact you don't need to push it as hard. It may surprise you that driving in too high a gear is every bit as detrimental to fuel economy as driving with higher revs.

As you get used to the gearing etc and as the car loosens up, you will find the sweet spots and be able to use them to good advantage. Don't betoo despondent.

Don't know if this helps at all, but I've just checked back and when my 1.4td was brand new my average on the run to work as 52.2. Now it's closer to 70 with 3k miles on the clock.

I average 35mpg from my current Mk1 2.0i on mixed journeys and just under this on my previous one. The mpg can vary wildly according to the journey type. However, a running average shows that the mpg is better in the beginning. The engine may have been tight, but running-in requires a different driving style. In theory, I could achieve something better now, but in practice I don't.

Well, its reassuring to know that other people are getting around the same mpg with similar cars. I was just surprised by the other thread in which people are listing their mpgs much higher than these. 70 mpg in some cases. Obviously they are different engines but still there seemed like quite a disparity.

This makes more sense.

I've driven / owned a lot of cars, and I've always considered fuel consumption before I've chosen a car.

I work on this formula which (for my driving style and mix of driving) is pretty much spot on to what I get from car to car. Its:-

Combined MPG figure less 10%

As others have pointed out, it really depends on your mix of driving, but my average does include the times when I've thrashed cars on track or been trying to get the last 0.5mpg out a diesel on a long trip.

ps For what its worth, my mum still has her mk1 2.0 Fabia petrol also (as Mike's)and gets 34mpg overall.

The official Skoda figures for combined mpg are:-

Petrol engines

1.2 60bhp 47.9 mpg

1.2 70bhp 47.9 mpg

1.4 85bhp 43.5 mpg

1.6 105bhp 40.9 mpg

1.6 105bhp Tiptronic 37.7 mpg

Diesel engines

1.4 70bhp 58.9 mpg

1.4 80bhp 61.4 mpg

1.4 80bhp DPF 68.9 mpg

1.9 105bhp 57.6 mpg

(The same figures are quoted for the larger and heavier estate versions)

To sum up, the diesel DPF Greenline is the most economical whereas the 1.6 petrol Tiptronic is the thirstiest - the former should give an extra 31.2 miles to each gallon over the latter.

That is the penalty paid for the convenience for a torque converted petrol automatic.

When you consider that there is no outright performance model as such, that is a wide ranging mpg variation within the range. The above figures are probably only achievable with a very smooth and very steady driving style plus kind traffic conditions.

When I had my 1.4TDi 80bhp driving from Epsom to Horsham along the back roads I was getting between 54mpg and 58mpg depending on how clear the A24 was.
