Cracking noise from the rear

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have had this noise coming from the rear for a little while now. It is really noticable everytime i get out of the car or going over speed bumps slowly. Anyway I decided to investigate today and it also appears jacking causes the noise to occur too. The only odd thing I noticed was both shock looks like they've had it.

So would this be the cause of the noise?

Does it cause more damage if I keep driving for a while till I can get it fixed?(recently coughed out £400 for cambelt)

How much will it set me back, and is it a moderate DIY job?

Many thanks

You have the fairly common problem of perished bump stops. Easy cheap fix - buy two new stops (about £6 each), remove shocks, fit new stops, replace shocks. However, this doesn't explain the cracking sound, so I would check springs and bushes or listen very carefully as you jack the car.

Help, I managed to get the shock absorber out to change the bump stop but can't get the hexagonal nut that is ontop the shock off. It is very awkward with just a spanner. I got the nut rotating after great effort but it's not coming off.

Please help as I'm stuck! Many thanks
