Timing belt

Featured Replies

Hi,

I bought an Octy 1.4 16V (2002 reg) a couple of months ago. Since then the back box fell off and that's about it.

Anyway, to the point - Had the car serviced last weekend. Went for a full service (not with the main dealer, saved €160!!!). Only thing they really changed were the wiper blades and a fan belt.

The mechanic rang me just before I was going to pick the car up. He said that my timing belt looked like it had to be changed. I left it out for the time being as the price is a bit much atm.

Considered takin' up the job myself but gave up after reading threads over here.

My logbook raises another question - it shows that the toothed belt was changed 20k miles ago in January last year. Garage I was in, claimed that the belt was worn. The car is now at 80k miles. It does get a fair bit of revving every now and then as the engine's tiny. But like come on - the belt was changed at 60!?....

Now this is a good 1  <--- I bought the car from the main dealer in Dublin. Everything in the logbook, except 60k & 70k services had their stamps. In fact the 2 last ones had no stamp at all. That makes me think if the belt was changed at all?

What do you guys think?

In case if anybody else's from Dub, the seller was phoenix motors and garage i went to who said i need to replace my cambelt was Discount Tyres in Blanch.

Thanks way ib advance!

By log book (which is actully the V5) I guess you mean service book. The cambelt is not part of the service so just because the service isnt stamped doesnt mean the belt wasnt done. Were both belts changed at 60 along with the tensioners? If you dont have a receipt for the changing of it all then it makes sense to do them again, they are very common to let go and if they do your looking at thousands not hundered to fix.

What Ross just said.

If you are not sure I'd do it as they can break at any time and it's heading towards new engine time when they do.

Considering a belt change now. Waiting for a garage to give me a call back with a quote for it including the pump. Will let you know asap

Got quotes ranging from 500 to 700 eur. Pretty bad.

remember there are 2 belts and 2 tensioners, plus an idler on that engine which might be the reason for the relatively high cost of the parts
