Quaife or small turbo

Featured Replies

Hey ho again brisk folk :orb_wave:

I had a thought last nite about my plans of k04 or k03 hybrid plans...

the conversions ive looked at have neen 2 to 3k for 240 to 250ish brake with maybe a 300bhp 1day.. what i gave thought to last nite was....

If i just went for a smf and quaife dif would that be of more benifit even with the 225 bhp ive got at the mo?

the car does amuse me with it speed at times :orb_elf:

and with the quaife i thought that it would help with putting all the power i have now down alot more and also i would be able to carry that speed through bends alot more?

ive had quotes b4 of about 1500 1600 ish with a smf uprated clutch , gearbox rebuild and dif.

I just thought id ask .. well your thoughts? :orb_geek:

lol and turbo and dif isnt really an option lol

dif now, turbo later.

Diff now, don't bother with a K04.

Hello,

LSD Quaife for me.

1.8T (AUQ) is équiped with a K03s (Hybrid) stock.

Sorry for my english.

It does have a K03S, its not a hybrid as such though, a standard turbo that is a development of the K03.

Hello,

K03S (Sport) is a K03 with turbine K04, it's a turbo hybrid "Borg Warner" yes. :)

Hybrid = with the piece of turbo upgrade. tuning or constructor.

Go with the diff first. Once you can handle 230ish hp with confidence, then look into upping the power. I wish I'd gone this route, as I totally love my diff - but I made it one of the last things to do, when I really wish it had been one of the first.

I'm pretty sure the K03S isnt a K03 with a K04 turbine (not sure if thats what you mean) thats more like a K04-001. Could be wrong though that was just my understanding.

:iagree:

The k03 is a k03, the k03s is a k03s. A hybrid k03s is a k03s with K04-020,022,023 internals and ground out housing.

The k04-001 is a Borg Warner turbo and is not as good as the hybrid k03s. This is due to it being smaller but it is a direct replacement for the k03s.....think this reads right

That was how I understood it.

do the quaifes really make that much of a dif then :orb_jump_

yes the diff makes a big diff.... i guess. having said that i didnt have one.. but as most of my performance running was on track using very grippy tyres i was not really slowed up... on crappy public roads it will make much more of an appearance.

Depends, the diff will have you put your existing power now down.

The big turbo will give you a lot less power in every day situations, then more power up top which you won't be able to put down unless in a straight line going very fast. At which point you will get banned for going too fast.

Each to their own and depends what you are doing eg track days, but I think only in road car terms and it would be the diff all the way.

Reminds me of the cosworths in the WRC rally, pre 4x4 era, the group N with just under 200bhp in many stages BEAT the fire breather genuine 550bhp versions. It basically boiled down to the fact that if you can deliver 200bhp or more without lots of revs or boost lag and put it down, you are going quick. Shifting the power up and the delivery up made it undrivable in most situations and essentially slower.

Diff.

:iagree: - top end power by itself is useless.

but wouldn't that make almost all turbos hybrid turbos, and render the term useless?

isn't the K03s just an evolution of and replacement for the K03?

Diff all the way. Makes the car alot better to drive :-)

That and a FMIC are my next mods :D All in preperation for the inevitable Big Turbo.

Garry

AIUI the term "hybrid turbo" applies to one made by a 3rd party who takes a model1 compressor and mates it to a model2 diffuser turbine wheel.
