At my service a few weeks ago my dealer advised that my pads (front and rear) were down to the last couple of mm, so decided to take a gamble and upgraded at my local vw specialist to EBC Red Stuff all round (for less than OEM at the dealer).

Now I am not a massively knowledgeable when it come to cars and stuff, but all I can say is Gosh ! Brakes are now hugely improved (although they seemed ok before) Gentle pressure on the stop pedal causes cars behind to loom large in the rear view mirror, it certainly suprised a few people behind me on my way home today. May take a bit of getting used to, but in my uneducated judgement, a big improvement.

Now if I can only get the same effect but in reverse with the 'loud' pedal

These pads sound great. The only reservation that I would have is the speed that they may wear out your discs. If your OE pads were nearly goosed what is the condition of your original discs? because they usually need to be replaced along with the pads.

From my experience pads to disc replacements are, these days, on a 2:1 basis. I.e. say pads @ 40,000 miles, pads and discs @ 80,000 miles. This is a good general guide IMHO.

As to EBC Red stuffs - good move, I'm sure you will not regret it! However, personally I prefer Ferodo DS2500s I have a front set on my vRS. A bit more expensive, but just as effective, if not more so, but in the long term IMHO a better pad having used them in several cars in recent years.

Agreed; OEM discs with uprated pads are fine.

So long as you are happy with them and don't intend to abuse them by hammering them.

I melted a set of Red Stuffs during one track day in my Puma a while back. It was a nice light car too, but did have little tiny discs! DS2500's are a much better pad.

I've been happily been running an Octy II TDI with 312mm front brakes and EBC red stuff ceramic V3 combined with OEM discs.

Absolubtly fine and they haven't had what I'd describe as an easy time of it.
