Crashed octy on tuesday now got problem with car?

Featured Replies

On tuesdy night a renault 19 hit me as i pulled out of a junction on the pasenger side, all the damage i got was a scuff to my front side bumper so told my insurance that i didnt need it repairing.

I havent drove since the accident and for the first time tonight i did and noticed the following major problem...

When the car is still and I turn the steering wheel left to right (full lock to full lock) the front of the car moves with the direction of what ever way i steer the wheel also it moves up on one side then does the same on the other side when turning full lock.

Even when i get the mrs to turn the wheel left to right and stand outside even the back wheel arches go up and down as the steering wheel is turned.

I have took the car up to 60 mph and it does not pull even while braking its only when its still and turning the steering the whole car seems to be out of line.

What could cause this as i am now going to have to get it sorted, do you think the insurance will write it off as this seems a big problem?

Thanks again everyone.

Justin

thats normal, they all do it.

Sounds normal to me? It's bad practice to turn the steering whilst the vehicle isn't moving, it puts a lot of stress on the system, but I must admit I have done it in the past and have noticed the symptoms you describe. I don't think I've done it on the Octavia, but some cars seem to lean/move more than others.

Are you sure its normal? i havent noticed it before. It was when i was reverse paking that i started to notice it, Just thought if the other car hit my passenger wheel it may have done damage.

I have had the car at a garage on a lift and they couldnt see anything wrong but they didnt turn the steering.

I never knew that the octavia moved its body with the steering and move up at the front and back down again.

Like said the car drives fine

all cars do it.

I've just been out to check mine and it's exactly the same. The movement is actually more pronounced than I have noticed when trying it on other cars in the past.

So no need to worry :P

the reason the car moves around is because when you steer the geometry changes, a cars castor/camber all change when the wheels move.

Mines the same

Thanks guys, I dont know how i have never noticed it before, God i am getting paranoid after this accident

Need to chill out with a few cans now.

Thanks again - I didnt realise they moved around as much maybe the octy does it a bit more.

I love this car and its the best and strongest car i have ever had so thanks for putting my mind at ease guys

If you're worried about underlying damage, you could get a decent 4 wheel alignment done. This would highlight any major issues.

Just for peace of mind on your part, might be worth it!
