Brake Problem

Featured Replies

This is the second time its happened recently, If I don't use the car for a few days (as is often the case these days) and if I brake lightlly, I get a noise from the rear offside wheel which is, I,m sure a binding brake. If I do an emergency stop i.e. hard brake it frees itself and is okay. Should I have it checked out or is it just that the cause is It is sticking because it's not being used enough? Any thoughts anyone? Its a Fabia 1.9TDI Elegance estate on an 05.

Is it not just surface rust a light glaze on the disc if the car has not been used for a couple of days.

I get this to usually after I have wash it or its been raining nothing to worry about.

It could be as stated above.

Or it could be part of a bigger problem.

There is no harm, or cost in just having it looked at.

If there is nothing wrong, then great, no need to worry.

But if there is something wrong, then its best to get it sorted.

Brakes are what stop you from hitting into things, so they need to work.

My advice, just get them checked.!

Aye if it is worrying you then get them checked over.

Is it making a metalic noise on the disc??

Yes the discs do get rusty but its a case of the caliper appears to stick. i.e. I get a 'Tap' 'Tap' sound as the wheel rotates and it continues all the time until I hit the brakes hard again. It's not just the 'grinding' sound you get from a rusty disc. Is this still Okay?

As I said... get it checked.

Without actually looking at it, I wouldnt be able to say.

Yes sorry, I posted as you were giving me the reply..I will get them checked.

Sounds like the caliper has seized to the disc, there is a free 30 min fix that can be done on this by removing the caliper if your mechanicly minded, if it were me take it your local tyre place and ask their opinion otherwise if you take it to Skoda they will condem your brakes. Otherwise could be something trapped in the caliper and disc like a wee stone.

Thank you for your replies and help. I've just been down to my local Skoda Specialist (ex skoda main dealer) Harniess of Louth. Gave me chance to make acquaintance as that's who I intend to use for service etc. Service due Oct. Cambelt change March 09. Very helpful and checked everything. Can't find a fault and suspects surface rust main prob. I couldn't make it do it today after my 30 mile trip yesterday.

As a matter of interest Quoted me around £130 for 30.000 service and then £200 for cambelt change £225 to include new water pump. Thought that sounded good??

Thats good to hear mate thats it's just surface rust.

Oh dear! it happened again. My brakes started binding and the car would not 'coast' with the clutch dipped but quickly came to a stop!. Been back to garage and they stripped them down and found a pad crumbling and one disc slightly warped.

New rear discs, pads and calipers stripped and cleaned. Cost £114-98 inc vat. Like new again!
