Anyone with VAGCOM near Preston, Lancs? Fabia Power Steering Prob

Featured Replies

I have a W-reg (2000) Skoda Fabia 1.4 MPi Classic, which I have owned since 2003, the current mileage is 122,000. Approximately 18 months ago I had the power steering pump replaced at a reputable garage. Everything has been fine until last week when I returned to my car (after seeing Batman at the cinema – v good!) to find the power steering warning light was on, the power steering was off and the headlights were flickering. I sat with the revs at around 2000 rpm for a couple of mins in the hope that the charge would build up and everything would be fine. The power steering didn’t come back on, though the lights did stop flickering. I felt sure the pump was fine and I checked the fuses, which were also fine, so after a quick search on this forum I decided that it may be the power steering angle sensor. I bought the part from my local Skoda dealer and fitted it myself (using this guide (Fabia-vrs.com - Replacing the Fabia PAS sensor)). When I removed the old unit it wasn’t the early plastic type as I expected, but the later metal one. I thought I might as well replace it as I was half way through the job and assumed the original sensor may have been replaced prior to my ownership. I took the car round the block and the steering hasn’t improved and the light is still on! I am aware that the code may need clearing. My next thought is that it could be the alternator, as it hasn’t been replaced since I’ve had it. The drive belt for the alternator has been replaced in the last 18 months, looks to be in fine condition and the tension is correct. Anyone have any ideas? Is there anyone local that could help diagnose the problem/clear the error? I live near Preston, Lancs.

Cheers,

Hi Bigern,

Have you checked your battery condition (volts before startup) mine started car ok but volts were 12.5 before startup and although alternator was pumping it up to 13.8 volts at idle speed it wasn't enough to work power steering when parking etc, ended up buying new battery.

I have vagcom 409.1 full version in rochdale, would lend a hand if needed, perfer to meet half way?

Thanks for the reply

When driving at speed it does appear to be slightly better, so it sounds like that could be the problem. I'll try recharging the battery to see if that helps and I'll come back to you about the vagcom. Thanks very much for your help.

Cheers,

Bigern
