VRS gearbox troubles

Featured Replies

I've been having increasing problems with my 06 furby:

1. 2nd gear is notchy and difficult (sometimes impossible) to engage

2. 3rd gear intermittently has a short grinding noise on engaging the clutch

Both problems have been getting worse over the last few weeks. I've done a search and found lots of stuff about the first problem (gear linkage, gearbox oil needing changed) but little about the second. Is it a synchromesh problem? Will it be covered by warranty?

Thanks in advance.

should all be covered under the warranty , sounds like you have some serious synchro issues

sometimes 2nd gear can be a bit notchy , esp when cold , but 3rd gear should be very smooth

first is notchy for me when the car is cold

O.K.

Annoyingly, the gearbox behaved during a 13 mile test drive by the mechanics so they didn't investigate further. The service chap suggested seeing how it goes over the next few months. My warranty is up in March '09.

Admittedly, the car was fine during a 600 mile round trip last week but when the 3rd gear thing happens, it's very noticeable (and worrying).

I see there's a thread on the octy I forum by a guy with exactly the same problem.

Should I just wait and see? Should I push to have it fully opened up to check gear linkage, synchro etc?

Sounds like a syncro/cold oil issue to me....

Mr Service seemed rather skeptical when I suggested both these things, though how you could could rule them out without looking is beyond me.

At least I'm getting the rear door seals done under warranty...

The oil issue should resolve itself when warmed up. If the box is still faulty then it sounds

like the syncro is worn...... Not unknown.....

Thanks guys, booking into MSB Skoda in Darlington tomorrow. Fingers crossed...

Oh dear....

My brother ended up with a complete new gearbox in his after he experienced problems. Took about three visits to the dealer to get it sorted. Incidentally, he does thrash the giddy out of it.
